URL2PNG can capture a webpage as an image, but creating that image is only one part of a social media preview. You must also make the image publicly reachable, add the target platform’s required metadata to the page, and check how the shared URL renders. URL2PNG’s API uses a signed request; the steps below show how to configure a capture without treating it as a social-card editor.
What URL2PNG does—and what it does not do
URL2PNG is a website screenshot API: it captures a target webpage and returns an image. Its documentation describes capture controls such as viewport size, full-page mode, rendering delay, and injected CSS; it does not describe a step that adds social metadata to your page or guarantees that a social network will display a preview. URL2PNG describes its service as capturing snapshots of websites for use in apps.
Think of the work as two separate jobs: create an image that suits your intended card, then configure and validate the page that people will share. The exact metadata and image acceptance rules depend on the platform; consult its current official guidance rather than assuming one universal card size or format.

Capture a page with the URL2PNG v6 API
1. Decide what the image should show
Choose a target URL and decide whether the image should show a framed section of the page or its entire document. For a card-like image, set an explicit viewport and inspect the resulting composition. URL2PNG documents a default viewport of 1480×1037 and viewport-only capture by default; those are API defaults, not recommended dimensions for every social platform.

2. Get credentials and sign the request
The documented v6 request includes an account API key, the target URL, and a security token. URL2PNG says the token is an MD5 hash of the complete query string and your secret key. Follow the official Quickstart Guide for the precise parameter ordering, escaping, and language-specific signing example. A URL that is nested inside a query string must be encoded correctly, and changing the query string after signing can invalidate the token.
Keep the secret key on a server you control. Do not put it in browser-side JavaScript, a public page, or a mobile app bundle where visitors can extract it. The examples below show request construction conceptually; create the token using URL2PNG’s current official signing instructions before sending the request.

3. Choose capture options
viewport: Set the browser viewport dimensions to control the framing. Test the composition at the dimensions you intend to use; the API documentation does not establish one universally correct social-image ratio.thumbnail_max_width: Limit or scale the output width. Use it when you need a smaller image, and check that text and important details remain legible.fullpage: Enable full-document capture when the whole page is needed. It defaults to false, so the default image shows only the viewport.delayandsay_cheese: Use the documented delay or wait-for-element options when content appears after the initial page load. Waiting longer can help with delayed content, but adds capture time; wait for a meaningful element where possible rather than relying on an arbitrary pause.custom_css_url: Apply CSS to the captured page when you need a capture-specific presentation. Verify that the CSS resource is reachable by the capture service and does not remove essential content.uniqueand TTL: Useuniqueto request a fresh screenshot when the page has changed and an existing cached image would be stale. The documented default TTL is 2,592,000 seconds (30 days); choose freshness deliberately and check current documentation for behavior.- Language and user agent: The API documents overrides for these settings. Set them only when the page’s output needs to match a particular language or browser presentation.
4. Construct, sign, and send the request
The following is request-shape pseudocode, not a complete runnable URL2PNG call: the token must be calculated from the complete query string according to the current URL2PNG documentation. Use the official example for your programming language so the parameter ordering and encoding used to calculate the token match the request you send.

Publish the image as a social preview
- Save the returned screenshot or place it in storage that serves images publicly over a stable URL. Confirm that the URL can be fetched without a login or private network access.
- Add the social metadata required by the platform to the page that will be shared, pointing it to the intended image URL. URL2PNG’s capture request does not itself insert these tags.
- Share the page URL, not merely the screenshot URL, and use the target platform’s current preview or debugging tool to inspect the result.
- If the preview is wrong, check the page’s metadata, image accessibility, capture freshness, and platform cache separately. A successful screenshot response alone does not prove the platform will render a card.
Cost and caching considerations
URL2PNG’s plans page says newly generated screenshots count as renders and cached loads do not count against plan usage. The service’s plans and quotas can change, so check the current URL2PNG plans page before estimating recurring use. A longer TTL can reduce repeated rendering for an unchanged page; a fresh unique request is appropriate when you need an updated image, but may count as a new render.
Common problems and fixes
- Authentication fails: Recheck the API key, secret, complete query string, parameter ordering, and URL encoding against the official signing example. Any mismatch between the signed string and the sent request can produce an invalid token.
- The screenshot shows an early or incomplete state: Add a suitable
delayor wait for a specific element withsay_cheese. Confirm that the page actually renders the expected content in the capture context. - The image is cropped unexpectedly: Review
viewportand whetherfullpageis enabled. Full-page capture changes the image’s composition and may not suit a compact preview. - The image is old: Consider whether the cached screenshot is still within its TTL. Use
uniquewhen a fresh capture is necessary, then account for the possibility that it is a newly generated render. - The social post has no preview despite a valid screenshot: Check the page’s platform-specific metadata and whether the image URL is publicly reachable, then validate the shared page with the platform’s current preview tool. URL2PNG does not guarantee social-platform display.
- Injected CSS has no effect: Check that the CSS URL is valid and accessible to the capture process, and that the selectors target the page as it is rendered.
