Use Wowza Streaming Engine’s REST API to configure, manage, and monitor a server over HTTP. A typical request targets http://[your-wowza-server]:8087/v2/[path-to-resource], uses the HTTP method documented for that resource, sends JSON or XML headers as appropriate, and authenticates with a method supported by your server’s configuration. For production, use HTTPS and keep authentication enabled.
What the REST API does
The Wowza Streaming Engine REST API exposes server resources and operations through HTTP. It can retrieve information, create records, update information or perform supported actions, and delete records. The API covered here is Wowza Streaming Engine’s API; it is distinct from the separately documented Wowza Video cloud REST API. See Wowza’s REST API overview.
Build the request URL
The documented pattern is http://[your-wowza-server]:8087/v2/[path-to-resource]. Replace the bracketed placeholders with the address of your Streaming Engine server and the exact resource path. The examples use port 8087 for REST requests; a particular installation or network configuration may differ.
For example, a request to an application resource follows the route family /v2/servers/{serverName}/vhosts/{vhostName}/applications. The public OpenAPI reference uses localhost:8087 as its example server and documents the default server and virtual-host names used in its route examples. Use the actual names for your installation.

Choose the endpoint and HTTP method
Do not infer supported operations from a URL alone: methods and request bodies vary by resource. Consult the OpenAPI reference for the exact route, method, parameters, and payload shape before sending a change.

For instance, the application route family documents collection-level GET and POST, and individual application operations including GET, POST, PUT, and DELETE. The reference also includes a PUT action route. Those examples do not mean every route supports every method.

Set request headers and send a request
Wowza’s examples specify the representation with Accept and Content-Type headers, commonly JSON, and UTF-8 character encoding. Match the content type to the body you send, and request a response format the endpoint supports. Some examples use XML instead.
A basic curl request for a JSON response has this shape; replace the server and resource path, and supply credentials using the method configured for your server:

For a create or update operation, use the endpoint’s documented method and body. The quoting and line continuations shown are for common POSIX shells; Windows command shells may require different quoting or continuation syntax.
Authenticate securely
A fresh installation uses basic authentication by default, according to Wowza. The REST API overview recommends retaining authentication in production. Basic authentication encodes the username and password with Base64, but Base64 is not encryption: Wowza says basic authentication is not considered secure unless used over HTTPS. Do not send credentials over unencrypted HTTP across an untrusted network.

Wowza documents authentication options including basic, digest, digestfile, remotehttp, and none. The supported password encoding depends on the selected method and server configuration:

Compatibility is version- and client-dependent. Wowza’s guide states that WSE 4.8.8.01 and later allows digest or bcrypt hashes in admin.password, and WSE 4.8.19 and later supports sha256 encryption. In the sha256 digest scenario described by that guide, it notes a Firefox limitation; it separately says Wowza Streaming Engine Manager is supported by most up-to-date browsers. Check the current authentication guide against your version and client before changing authentication settings. These qualifications are not a general statement about all browsers or all configurations.

Find and verify endpoints
Use the public OpenAPI reference
The public reference identifies Wowza Streaming Engine REST API version 2.0.0 and lists route families, operations, and the example server. Use it to verify the exact route and operation for the resource you need rather than guessing from another endpoint.
Inspect the local Swagger reference with Postman
Wowza documents a local documentation-discovery procedure using Postman and the Swagger reference servlet. That procedure requires Wowza Streaming Engine 4.5.0 or later: configure and enable the local documentation servlet, restart the server, then retrieve http://localhost:8089/swagger.json. This port is for the described documentation servlet flow; it is not the REST API’s example port 8087. Follow Wowza’s Postman guide for the server-side setup details.
Check server information when supported
The reference documents GET /restinfo for builds 15089 or later. It returns information including API version, server name, version, REST build, and license validity. If your build does not meet that documented threshold, do not assume this endpoint is available.
Common problems and fixes
- Connection refused or timeout: Check that the server address and REST port are reachable from the client, and confirm the configured port and network/firewall rules. The documented example uses 8087 for REST requests; do not confuse it with 8089 in the local Swagger/Postman procedure.
- Unauthorized response: Confirm the credentials, selected authentication method, and password encoding are compatible. Do not work around an authentication error by setting authentication to
nonein production. - Unsupported method or route: Confirm the route, resource names, and allowed method in the OpenAPI reference. A method accepted by an application endpoint may not be accepted by another resource.
- Invalid or unexpected payload: Match
Content-Typeto the submitted JSON or XML, use UTF-8 as appropriate, and follow the endpoint’s documented body schema. UseAcceptfor the desired response format. - Authentication behaves differently across clients: Check the configured authentication scheme, password encoding, WSE release, and client. The sha256 digest browser qualification in Wowza’s guide is specific to the described configuration.
- Swagger JSON is unavailable: Confirm that the local documentation servlet is configured and enabled, that the server was restarted, and that the installed Engine version meets Wowza’s 4.5.0-or-later requirement for this procedure.
Examples are resource- and configuration-specific
Wowza’s query examples include workflows such as sending adaptive-bitrate streams to Akamai with a stream-target profile. Treat such workflows as illustrations for their documented resource and configuration, not as universal API recipes; verify the operation and parameters in the reference for the task you are performing.
