You do not install a Stack Overflow database locally: configure your client to launch mcp-remote against mcp.stackoverflow.com, sign in with your Stack Exchange account, approve access, and restart the client.
What you need before connecting
- An MCP-compatible client or agent runtime that supports server configuration.
- A Stack Overflow or Stack Exchange account for the authentication and consent step.
- Node.js and
npxavailable to the client, because the documented configuration runsmcp-remote.
The public endpoint is remote. The setup below is for the public Stack Overflow service, not Stack Internal Community MCP, which is a separate enterprise product with a tenant-specific endpoint and different administration and authentication.
Configure the public Stack Overflow MCP server
1. Open your MCP client’s server configuration
Each client exposes this file or screen differently, but you are looking for the setting named MCP servers, Model Context Protocol servers, or external tools. Add a server entry named stack-mcp-server with the command and arguments shown here:
{
"mcpServers": {
"stack-mcp-server": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"mcp-remote",
"mcp.stackoverflow.com"
]
}
}
}
Keep the endpoint exactly as mcp.stackoverflow.com. The mcp-remote package acts as the local bridge between an MCP client that starts commands and Stack Overflow’s hosted MCP service.
#1 Best Overall
2. Save the configuration and start the server
Save the file or apply the settings in the client. On startup, the client should run npx mcp-remote mcp.stackoverflow.com. The first connection normally opens a browser window or displays a sign-in URL.
3. Authenticate and grant consent
- Follow the link to Stack Exchange login.
- Sign in to the account you use with Stack Overflow.
- Review and authorize the client when prompted.
- Accept the displayed terms.
- Quit and reopen the MCP client.
Authentication is account-based and requires explicit user consent. The public setup documentation does not describe a separate API-key flow or provide a detailed security architecture, so do not substitute credentials intended for another Stack Exchange API integration.
4. Verify the connection with a small request
Ask the client something narrow, such as “Search Stack Overflow for Python requests timeout handling and show the most relevant question IDs.” A successful connection should cause the client to invoke an MCP tool rather than answer solely from its model memory. Then ask for the content of one returned question ID to test retrieval.
Tools provided by the public server
The official documentation lists two tools at the time of writing. It notes that more tools may be added in future phases, so treat this as the documented inventory rather than a permanent guarantee.

| Tool | Purpose | Typical input | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
so_search |
Lexical search over questions | A text query describing the problem | Matching Stack Overflow questions, including identifiers that can be fetched |
get_content |
Retrieve content by ID | A question or answer identifier | Question, answers, and comments associated with the requested content |
Use search for discovery
Phrase a search as the terms likely to appear in a question title or body: include the language, library, error text, and relevant version when known. For example, “Node fetch ECONNRESET retry” is more useful than “my request fails.” Lexical search is not a promise of semantic ranking, so inspect several returned questions and verify that their environment matches yours.
Use content retrieval for verification
Once search returns an ID, request it with get_content. Read the accepted answer together with other answers and comments: comments can contain corrections, version caveats, or links that the accepted answer predates. Do not treat an answer as current merely because it is accepted.
Practical workflows
Runtime assistance in an editor or chatbot
- Ask the assistant to search for the exact error and technology.
- Have it return question IDs and short reasons for relevance.
- Request full content for the two or three best candidates.
- Ask it to separate cited Stack Overflow guidance from its own recommendation.
- Confirm version, operating system, and date before applying a solution.
Building a retrieval-augmented tool
Your application can let an agent call so_search at answer time, then call get_content for selected IDs and place the returned material in a clearly attributed context window. Add limits in your application so a broad user query does not trigger unnecessary searches. The service is suitable for prototypes, community-focused assistants, developer extensions, chatbots, learning tools, and dashboards or research tools exploring developer trends—use cases described by Stack Overflow, not independent performance guarantees.
Research and trend exploration
For a dashboard, store the IDs and query terms used for each run. Re-fetch content when you need current text rather than assuming a cached answer remains unchanged. Respect the service limit and your own data-retention and attribution requirements.

Daily limit and planning calls
The official public MCP documentation states a limit of 100 calls per day per Stack Exchange user. The page does not state a reset time, burst allowance, or a separate quota for each tool. Count every tool invocation in your client workflow, including repeated searches and content fetches, and design for the documented limit rather than assuming unlimited access.
- Search once with a specific query instead of issuing many near-duplicates.
- Fetch content only for IDs you intend to inspect.
- Cache IDs and retrieved text during a session when appropriate.
- Show users a clear message when the daily allowance is exhausted.
- Contact Stack Overflow sales for higher-volume use cases, as the official page recommends.
Public Stack Overflow MCP versus Stack Internal Community MCP
These names are easy to confuse but describe different services.
| Attribute | Public Stack Overflow MCP | Stack Internal Community MCP |
|---|---|---|
| Endpoint | mcp.stackoverflow.com |
Tenant-specific address such as https://[your_site].stackenterprise.co/mcp |
| Audience | Users of the public Stack Overflow service | Organizations running an internal Stack Enterprise community |
| Documented tools | so_search and get_content |
Separate read and write tool set documented for the internal product |
| Authentication | Stack Exchange login, authorization, and terms consent | Administrator enablement and OAuth 2.0 with PKCE in the enterprise guides |
Do not paste the enterprise endpoint into the public configuration, or assume that enterprise token handling, tenant hosting, or request-log statements apply to the public server.
Troubleshooting
The client says it cannot start npx
Cause: Node.js is missing, or the client process cannot find its installation. Fix: Install a supported Node.js release, verify that node and npx work in the same user environment as the MCP client, then restart the client. If your client has a configurable executable path, point it to the full path of npx.
Recommended Free Tools
No browser window appears
Cause: The client may be running headlessly, or the sign-in URL may be in its logs. Fix: Copy the displayed authorization URL into a normal browser, complete login and consent, then restart the MCP client.
Authentication succeeds but tools are missing
Cause: The client loaded an old configuration or the server process exited before initialization. Fix: Confirm the key is exactly mcpServers, the server name is nested beneath it, and the arguments are separate array items. Quit and reopen the client after authorization.
Search returns irrelevant questions
Cause: so_search performs lexical search, so common words can dominate results. Fix: Add the exact error string, package name, language, and version; then inspect multiple results before retrieving content.
A request fails after several successful calls
Cause: You may have reached the documented 100-calls-per-day account limit, or the remote service may be temporarily unavailable. Fix: Stop retry loops, review your invocation count, reuse retrieved content, and try again after the quota period. For sustained volume, follow the official guidance to contact sales.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is automated website screenshots rather than Stack Overflow content, ScreenshotNeo provides a separate one-request screenshot API. It is not a replacement for the Stack Overflow MCP tools; it is useful when an agent or application needs a rendered page image or PDF.
cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the public Stack Overflow MCP server require a local Stack Overflow installation?
No. The documented service is hosted remotely at mcp.stackoverflow.com; your client runs mcp-remote as the connection bridge.
Can I use the public server with an enterprise Stack Overflow tenant?
Not using the public configuration described here. Stack Internal Community MCP has a tenant-specific endpoint and separate enterprise documentation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Are the 100 daily calls shared across users?
The official documentation states 100 calls per day per Stack Exchange user; it does not describe a shared organization quota.
The Bottom Line
Configure mcp-remote with mcp.stackoverflow.com, complete Stack Exchange consent, restart your client, and use so_search followed by get_content. Budget for 100 calls per day per Stack Exchange user and keep the public and enterprise MCP services separate.
