Use the Screenplay Pattern to organize automated tests around an actor’s goal: give the actor the abilities needed to interact with the system, express meaningful workflow steps as tasks, keep low-level operations in interactions, and check outcomes with questions and explicit assertions. Adopt the extra structure only where it makes tests clearer or workflows reusable; it is not automatically better than a simpler test.

What the Screenplay Pattern means

Screenplay is an actor-centric way to model a test. An actor represents a user or other external participant trying to achieve a goal. The actor uses abilities to work through interfaces such as a browser, API, or database; performs tasks and lower-level interactions; and asks questions to retrieve system state for assertions.

Serenity/JS describes five building blocks: actors, abilities, interactions, tasks, and questions. The names provide a useful framework-neutral model, but APIs and class names vary by implementation. Serenity/JS describes the stage-performance metaphor in its Screenplay Pattern documentation.

Building block Purpose Example
Actor The participant pursuing a goal. A customer placing an order.
Ability An interface or capability the actor can use. Browser, API, or database access.
Task A meaningful workflow step, often composed of smaller activities. Search for a product or place an order.
Interaction A direct, lower-level operation. Click a button, enter text, open a URL, or issue a request.
Question A query that retrieves state to check. Read a heading, check visibility, or retrieve a domain value.

How to structure a Screenplay test

  1. Start with the goal and observable result. State what the participant is trying to accomplish and what evidence would demonstrate success. Begin with behavior, not a click-by-click script.
  2. Identify the actor or actors. Name the roles that matter in the scenario. Use more than one actor when distinct participants or permissions are part of the behavior.
  3. Give each actor the required abilities. Add only the interfaces needed for the scenario—such as browser, API, or database access. Serenity BDD demonstrates browser setup and discusses API and database interactions; Serenity/JS describes abilities as wrappers around integration libraries.
  4. Express business steps as tasks. Give meaningful workflow work a name that makes sense to someone reading the test, such as searching for an item or adding it to a cart.
  5. Keep direct operations in interactions. Put operations such as clicking, entering text, or issuing a request at the lower level. Let a task coordinate them when that makes the business step easier to understand or reuse.
  6. Ask questions and assert the answer. Query relevant system state, then make the expected result explicit. A question can retrieve a heading, visibility state, API response, or domain-specific value.
  7. Keep the test runner that fits the project. Screenplay does not require adopting a particular runner or Cucumber. Serenity/JS documents using its Screenplay APIs with Playwright Test and that runner’s browser fixtures.

Framework-neutral example

actor = Customer.with(browserAbility)
actor.attemptsTo(
    SearchFor.product("Everest guide"),
    AddProductToCart("Everest guide")
)
assert actor.asks(ShoppingCart.contents()).contains("Everest guide")

This is explanatory pseudocode, not executable code. Real syntax differs between Serenity BDD, Serenity/JS, and other implementations. Its point is the separation of intent (tasks) from direct operations and outcome checks (questions and assertions).

When the abstractions help—and when they do not

Screenplay is useful when its vocabulary makes a scenario easier to read, when business workflows recur, or when separating intent from system operations helps teams reuse and maintain test code. The official framework materials present readability and maintainability as goals, not as guaranteed or quantitatively measured outcomes.

  • Keep the layers when a task name communicates the business step and a question makes the checked outcome clear.
  • Simplify when a one-line action is hidden behind several tiny classes without making the scenario clearer or creating meaningful reuse.
  • Adopt incrementally if an existing regression suite is valuable but hard to restructure all at once. Try the pattern on a workflow that repeats or has a clear business goal; retain simpler tests where the extra layers add no value.

Community discussions mention learning curve and complexity concerns, but those comments are anecdotes, not evidence of typical team outcomes. No attributable quantitative statistic on adoption, speed, defects, or maintenance was located in the sources reviewed, so a universal productivity gain should not be assumed.

Choosing an implementation

Choose based on your language, current runner, integrations, and how much structure your team can usefully maintain. The available official materials document these paths; they do not establish one as best for every organization.

Path What the documentation supports Where to start
Java with Serenity BDD Screenplay fundamentals and first-scenario guidance, including JUnit and Cucumber contexts. Screenplay fundamentals and the first Screenplay scenario.
JavaScript with Serenity/JS The five Screenplay elements and integration with Playwright Test. Serenity/JS with Playwright Test.

Check the current documentation and dependency versions before adopting setup instructions: APIs and integration details can change. Serenity BDD and Serenity/JS are separate implementations, so do not assume their syntax or configuration is interchangeable.

Keep browser work in the test, or use a screenshot API

For an ordinary Screenplay test, give the actor browser ability and let the implementation interact with the application and ask questions about its state. If the job is to capture a page as an image or PDF rather than exercise a workflow, a screenshot API can do that separately; it does not replace Screenplay’s task and assertion structure. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers.

Or skip the browser setup

For a standalone capture, one GET request returns a screenshot or PDF. This cURL example saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe; replace the URL and set your API key:
