The Galaxy S22 Ultra has an S Pen stored in a slot at the bottom of the phone. Pull it out to write or draw on the screen; use Samsung’s S Pen settings to enable notes, shortcuts and remote controls. The exact options can vary with the phone’s software version.
How do you start writing or drawing?

Press the S Pen in its slot at the bottom of the Galaxy S22 Ultra to release it, then pull it out.

Touch the pen tip to the screen to write or draw. In supported input fields, you can also write by hand and convert your handwriting to text.

Where are the S Pen settings?
Open Settings > Advanced features > S Pen. This menu includes controls for features such as Air actions, Air command, Air view, S Pen to text, screen-off memos, removal behavior, sounds and vibrations. How do you take a note with the screen off?
Write a screen-off memo
With the display off, remove the S Pen and write on the screen. Screen-off memos are controlled from the S Pen settings; the available options may depend on the software version.

Start a quick note with the screen on
Hold the button on the side of the S Pen and tap the screen twice. Samsung says the note is saved in Samsung Notes when you finish. Samsung’s S Pen settings guide

How do you open and use Air Command?
Hover the S Pen over the display and press its side button to open Air Command. Samsung lists these shortcuts for the S22 Ultra:

How do Air Actions work?
Air Actions are remote controls, not a way to write on the display. They require a charged S Pen connected to the phone, and commands depend on the supported app that is open. Samsung’s examples for the S22 Ultra include:

- Air actions support may vary by app
- Hold the pen button to open the camera.
- Press the button once to take a photo or play or pause media.
- Press it twice to switch cameras or skip to another track.
- For a gesture command, hold the button while moving the pen. The action varies by app.

What should you do if Air Actions do not work?

Check that the S Pen has charge and is connected. A pen that still writes may not have a working Bluetooth remote connection.

Insert the pen into the phone to reconnect it, then try the remote action again.

If it still fails, open Settings > Advanced features > S Pen > Air actions > More options > Reset S Pen.

Compatibility depends on the specific pen and device. Samsung says the S22 Ultra S Pen can write on some other compatible devices, while some pens made for Note or Tab devices may provide writing only on the S22 Ultra. Samsung identifies the Z Fold3 S Pen as unsupported for the S22 Ultra.
