Download Reddit from the App Store on iPhone or Google Play on Android. Once installed, use the upper-left menu or swipe right to find communities and feeds; use your avatar menu and Settings for saved items, notifications, privacy, and display preferences. Some controls differ by operating system, especially mature-content settings and video audio behavior.
Download Reddit and check whether your phone is supported
Install the official app from the store for your device: the App Store for iOS or Google Play for Android. Avoid relying on an old installation source if the app is unavailable or cannot update.
Reddit’s minimum-support table, updated June 18, 2026, lists Android OS 10 with Reddit app version 2026.10, and iOS 16 with app version 2025.33. These are date-sensitive minimums, not a promise that every feature works identically on every device. Reddit warns that older operating systems may have bugs or may be unable to download new app versions; mobile web is an alternative if your device falls below the listed minimum. Check Reddit’s current minimum-version page for later changes.

Find your communities and organize your feed
From most screens, swipe right from the left edge or tap the menu in the upper-left corner to open the community drawer. It provides shortcuts to recently visited communities, favorites, communities you’ve joined, custom feeds, and followed users. Moderators also see moderator resources there. Reddit’s community-management help page describes the drawer and its contents.

To make a community easier to return to, add it to your favorites from the community controls; it will then appear in the drawer’s favorites area. Joined communities remain accessible in the same drawer, while custom feeds and followed users have their own entries.
Turn home-feed recommendations on or off
If you want to limit suggested communities and posts in Home, use the setting for home-feed recommendations. Reddit documents different paths on iOS and Android:
- iOS: Tap your avatar → menu → Settings → your username under Account Settings → Privacy → turn “Show recommendations in home feed” on or off.
- Android: Tap your avatar → menu → Settings → account settings under General → Privacy → turn “Enable home feed recommendations” on or off.
Reddit may adjust labels or navigation in later app versions; the platform-specific FAQs have the current documented paths: iOS FAQ and Android FAQ.

Find saved posts, comments, history, and notifications
Open saved items
Tap your avatar, open the menu, then tap Saved to view saved posts and comments. This is the same general route on iOS and Android.

Review your post and comment history
Open your profile and use its Posts and Comments tabs to browse your activity.
Choose which notifications Reddit sends
Notification preferences are in Settings under the account’s notification-management controls. The labels and exact route vary by platform and app version, so use the relevant iOS or Android FAQ if the menu names on your screen differ.
Change appearance and video behavior
Use dark mode
Both apps include a dark-mode control in settings. Android also documents an automatic option that can follow your device’s appearance or sunrise and sunset. To use Android’s automatic mode, Reddit says the main Dark Mode toggle must be off before you select the automatic setting. The iOS FAQ does not document the same automatic choices.
Stop videos from autoplaying
On either platform, look under Accessibility → Media and animations for autoplay controls. Choose the available option that best matches whether you want videos to play automatically.
Set video audio behavior
On iOS, Settings includes a dedicated Mute videos by default option. On Android, the app remembers the last mute setting you used on an in-feed video rather than offering that same dedicated default control.
Mute a subreddit or block a person
Mute a community
Open the community, tap its overflow menu, and select Mute. Reddit says muting prevents that community’s posts from appearing in your feeds; it does not remove the community or prevent you from visiting it directly. You can manage muted communities from the relevant account or privacy settings. Reddit’s app FAQs describe the feature as a way to keep a community out of your feeds.
Block a redditor
Open the person’s profile, tap the overflow menu, and choose the platform’s block action. Reddit’s Android FAQ says blocking prevents that redditor’s posts and comments from being shown to you. Menu wording and account-management paths can vary, so consult the platform FAQ if the control is not where expected: iOS or Android.

Chat settings let you choose who can start a request, including everyone, accounts older than 30 days, nobody, or an allowlist where that option is available. You can also route chat notifications to your inbox, accept or ignore requests, and hide chats. Reddit’s chat guide explains that chat is where direct messaging happens.

To reduce unwanted chat contact, open account settings and find Safety or chat permissions, then set who can send requests. Reddit’s help page on preventing chat spam notes that under-18 users have requests set to Nobody by default. Moderators and admins may still be able to send requests even when other requests are restricted.
Set mature-content preferences: iPhone and Android differ
Do not expect the same in-app route on both platforms:
- iOS: Reddit’s iOS FAQ says Apple’s guidelines mean the NSFW preference must be changed on reddit.com, not in the app. Sign in on the desktop site to manage the mature-content preference, including blurring mature images and media, then restart the Reddit app for the change to take effect.
- Android: The Android app documents mature-content and blur controls under View options.
