To use Apple’s Readiness app, you need an Apple Watch Series 12 or Apple Watch Ultra 4 and must be at least 13. Add your age, height, and weight in the Fitness app on iPhone, set up Activity and Sleep with Overnight Vitals, then wear the watch while sleeping for at least seven nights. After setup, open Readiness on the watch to see your score and what is influencing it.
Check whether your Apple Watch supports Readiness
Apple says Readiness is available on Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 for users aged 13 and older. If you have another watch model, the app is not listed as supported in Apple’s current guidance.
Readiness uses sleep, activity, and health measurements to estimate your capacity for the day. It is a guidance feature, not a medical assessment or exercise-safety clearance. Apple Support

Prepare your iPhone and watch
- On your iPhone, open the Fitness app and enter your age, height, and weight in your Health Details.
- Set up Activity in Fitness if you have not already done so.
- Set up Sleep and enable Overnight Vitals so the watch can collect measurements while you sleep.
- Wear the supported Apple Watch to bed for at least seven nights. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance also requires sleep data from the previous night before a score is available.
Apple describes a separate baseline requirement for Vitals: sleep data from at least seven of the past 49 nights. This is not the same wording as the initial seven-night setup period; the baseline depends on having enough recent overnight data.

|---|---|
| 0–1 | Recover |
| 2–4 | Pace Yourself |
| 5–7 | Ready |
| 8–10 | Go For It |
The category is a summary of the inputs Apple uses, not a guarantee that a strenuous workout is appropriate for you. Your symptoms, health conditions, medications, and professional advice may matter more than the score.

Activity
Readiness considers recent activity, including active calories, workout effort ratings, and Training Load. Activity from the current day and recent history can influence the score. Apple says increased activity can lower it, while steady or reduced activity can raise it.

Vitals
Overnight measurements include heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, heart-rate variability (HRV), and blood oxygen, along with heart rate measured during the day. Apple compares these with your recent baseline: notably or slightly unusual readings can lower the score, while typical or favorable readings can raise it. Blood Oxygen availability varies for certain Apple Watch models purchased in the United States.
Sleep
Sleep input includes recent sleep-score data, including the previous night and recent history. Low or inconsistent sleep can lower Readiness.

Why a score can change during the day
Readiness updates as new information arrives. Apple identifies calories burned, naps, and daytime heart rate as factors that can affect updates; an intense workout or a shift in daytime vitals can also change the result.

Use Readiness as context, not medical clearance
Apple cautions that Readiness does not account for every health factor, including existing conditions and medications, and says users should not rely on it alone to decide whether or when exercise is safe. Treat it as one signal alongside how you feel and any relevant guidance from a health professional.
Apple says the Readiness algorithm was developed using data from the Apple Heart and Movement Study with input from Apple exercise scientists and physicians. The company’s published materials do not establish an independent accuracy or health-outcome statistic for the Readiness score. A separate Apple heart-rate accuracy study involved over 1,000 participants, but that figure concerns sensor accuracy, not validation of Readiness scores. Apple Newsroom
