What the Cypress TAP CLI is for
The TAP CLI connects agent workflows to an interactive Cypress session that is already running in open mode. Instead of launching a separate workflow from scratch, an agent can use the existing session to run or rerun a spec, check its status, and inspect the page or a test failure. Cypress documented the feature in version 15.21.0; see the Cypress CLI changelog.
This is a Cypress CLI feature, not the old standalone cypress-cli package. That separate repository is archived and deprecated; it directs users to the all-in-one cypress npm package: Cypress CLI repository.
Check the prerequisites
- Use Cypress 15.21 or later. Cypress’s AI Toolkit lists that as the minimum for its
cypress-tapskill. - Have a Cypress open-mode session running. The feature is designed to act in the context of an existing session, not as a substitute for opening Cypress.
- Use a Chromium-family browser for the AI Toolkit workflow, as specified in its cypress-tap skill requirements.
- Confirm the command surface locally before writing an agent prompt or automation around it; subcommands and options are version-dependent.
What an agent can do with cypress tap
Cypress’s feature description groups the documented work into several tasks. The exact subcommand names and arguments are not enumerated in the changelog summary, so use local help rather than guessing them.

Discover open sessions
List the open Cypress sessions available to attach to. This is the useful first step when more than one session may be running or an agent needs to confirm that a session exists.
Run or rerun a spec
Start a spec in the open session or rerun it after a change. This supports an iterative agent loop: make or review a test change, run the spec, inspect the outcome, and repeat.

Check run status and results
Ask for the state and results of a run instead of inferring completion from a terminal or browser window. The documented capability includes reporting run status and results.
Inspect a failing test
Retrieve a failing test’s error and Cypress Command Log. These details provide context about the failure and the commands leading up to it, which can help an agent diagnose the problem.

Inspect the app
Inspect the application’s DOM and accessibility tree. This gives an agent page structure and accessibility information from the running app, rather than relying only on a screenshot.
Use the installed version’s help for exact syntax
- Open the project where Cypress is installed and start Cypress in open mode with your usual project workflow.
- In a terminal using that project’s Cypress installation, run
cypress tap --help. - Use the displayed subcommand list and option descriptions to choose the session, spec, reporting, or inspection operation you need.
- If the command supports machine-readable output in your installed release, add
--jsonas documented by its help. Cypress says output is readable by default and--jsonrequests JSON. - After an agent runs or inspects a spec, check the returned status or details and verify the relevant result in the open Cypress session.
The changelog explicitly points to cypress tap --help for the full subcommand list. Do not copy syntax from a different release without checking it against the version installed in the project.

Readable output or JSON
By default, each documented subcommand prints human-readable output. Add --json when you want machine-readable output for an agent or another program to parse. Confirm how the installed command expects that option by consulting its local help; the feature summary does not specify whether it is global or accepted by each subcommand.
Troubleshooting and version notes
The command or expected subcommand is unavailable
Check the project’s installed Cypress version and run cypress tap --help with that installation. The feature was introduced in 15.21.0, and its detailed syntax may differ across releases.

No session appears to be available
Confirm that Cypress is running in open mode and that the agent is operating in the intended project and browser session. The TAP workflow depends on an existing open-mode session.
HTTP request lines appear in the open-session terminal
This was a specific early-version issue, not expected behavior to assume for current releases. The changelog says Cypress 15.21.1 fixed cypress tap printing HTTP request lines such as GET /__cypress/sessions/<id> to the attached cypress open terminal, where they obscured session output. If you encounter this, check the installed version and consult the changelog for the relevant release history.
