To use Cypress Component Testing, install Cypress in your project, open the Cypress App, choose Component Testing, and follow its Launchpad to configure the framework and bundler. Then create a component spec, mount the component, and test its rendered behavior in a real browser. Cypress’s setup and compatibility details vary by framework and version, so check the current Cypress compatibility table before you begin.
What Cypress Component Testing runs
A component test mounts an individual UI component in a testbed in a real browser. You can inspect its rendered output, interact with it, and make assertions using Cypress commands. This is different from an end-to-end test, which visits an application running as a whole, such as a staging or deployed site.
For component tests, Cypress starts a development server to compile and serve the specs and support files. The standard configuration identifies the project’s framework and bundler in component.devServer. Cypress documents bundled Vite and Webpack dev-server implementations, so a separate dev-server package is usually unnecessary for the standard setup.
Check framework and bundler compatibility
The Cypress getting-started guide listed these combinations when checked on October 3, 2026. Treat this as a documentation snapshot, not a guarantee for every project configuration; verify the official table when setting up.

| Framework or UI library | Documented bundler | Version context in the guide |
|---|---|---|
| React | Vite 8 or Webpack 5 | React 18–19 |
| Next.js | Webpack 5 | Next.js 15–16; React 18–19 |
| Vue | Vite 8 or Webpack 5 | Vue 3 |
| Angular | Webpack 5 | Angular 21–22 |
| Svelte | Vite 8 or Webpack 5 | Svelte 5; integrations are marked Alpha |
| Qwik and Lit | Community integrations | Community-maintained; see the relevant framework definition |
For community frameworks, Cypress describes a framework definition as providing onboarding requirements and a mount adapter. Packages follow the cypress-ct-* or @organization/cypress-ct-* naming conventions. See Cypress’s custom framework guide.
Install Cypress and start Component Testing
-
From the project root, install Cypress as a development dependency using your package manager:
npm install cypress --save-dev # or: yarn add cypress --dev # or: pnpm add --save-dev cypress # or: bun add --dev cypress -
Open the Cypress App. For npm, run:
npx cypress openUse the equivalent Cypress command for your package manager if needed.
-
In the App, select Component Testing. The Launchpad detects the framework and bundler, checks required dependencies, and proposes project configuration.

Review the generated configuration and spec locations
The Launchpad creates or updates Cypress configuration with a component.devServer setting. A CommonJS JavaScript configuration can look like this:
const { defineConfig } = require('cypress')
module.exports = defineConfig({
component: {
devServer: {
framework: 'react',
bundler: 'vite',
},
},
})
This is an example, not a universal configuration: set framework and bundler to match the application. Use the Launchpad’s generated values as your starting point rather than copying the React/Vite values into another stack. Cypress’s component framework configuration guide explains the available setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSpec pattern and shared files
By default, Cypress looks for component specs ending in .cy.js, .cy.jsx, .cy.ts, or .cy.tsx. If you organize tests differently, configure component.specPattern; for example, it can be restricted to files under src.
The default component support file is cypress/support/component.js, a place for setup shared by component specs. The default component index is cypress/support/component-index.html; use it for global styles, fonts, or scripts needed in the testbed. The configuration reference lists component defaults and identifies devServer as required: Cypress configuration.

Write a first component test
A component spec imports the framework-specific mount helper, mounts the component, then uses Cypress to select, interact with, and assert against the rendered UI. The exact mount import and setup differ by framework; use the matching Cypress example rather than assuming React, Vue, Angular, and Svelte use identical imports.
-
Create a component spec using one of the default extensions, such as

Import the component and that framework’s Cypress mount helper, following the official example for your stack.
-
Mount the component in a test and select an element from its rendered output.
-
Interact with it—for example, click a button—and assert the visible result or other expected behavior.

The Cypress examples illustrate the React mount-and-interaction model: React component examples. Vue setup details are in the Vue component testing guide.
Run and inspect the component test
Choose a browser in the Cypress App and start Component Testing. Cypress visually renders the component in its testbed, where you can inspect it using the App and browser developer tools. This real-browser rendering makes component tests useful for behavior that depends on browser rendering, while the development server uses the application’s development transforms to compile specs.
When testing starts, Cypress reads component.devServer, starts the configured server on an available port, and serves compiled specs and support files. It loads the configured component index HTML and imports the support file and active spec.
Configuration choices and common problems
The detected bundler or framework does not match
Use the application’s actual framework and bundler in component.devServer. The Launchpad’s detection is a starting point. Cypress can reuse discoverable Vite or Webpack configuration, which can avoid duplicating the app setup; confirm that the generated values reflect the project you are testing.

Aliases are missing
Cypress discovers standalone Vite or Webpack configuration files, but does not execute meta-framework configuration such as nuxt.config to derive generated bundler settings. If imports fail because an alias is unresolved, explicitly supply the required aliases through the Cypress Vite or Webpack configuration. Cypress documents Nuxt 3+ component testing as Vue 3 with Vite, but does not provide a dedicated Nuxt framework definition or read nuxt.config; see its Vue guide.
Specs or assets fail to load after a path override
devServerPublicPathRoute controls the route used to load compiled specs and assets. An incorrect override can prevent them from loading. Most projects can leave the default unchanged; review the configuration guide if you have a specific routing need.
The project needs a custom bundler or server workflow
A custom component.devServer function is an advanced integration path for a bundler outside the standard Vite and Webpack setup, or for a preview-server workflow. It must start a server that serves the index HTML and injects support and spec imports in the required order, return the server port, and may provide a close callback. Prefer the standard framework-and-bundler configuration when it fits the project.
The framework is community-supported or marked Alpha
Community integrations require a compatible framework definition and mount adapter. Svelte’s integrations were marked Alpha in the compatibility table checked on October 3, 2026. Confirm current support before relying on a setup for a critical project.

Choose component testing when the question is about a component
Use Component Testing when you need to exercise one component’s rendering and interactions in a real browser. Use end-to-end testing when the behavior under test depends on the running application as a whole. Before adopting component testing in a project, check that its framework and bundler versions are documented, and account for explicit configuration where framework-generated settings are not discoverable. The Cypress setup documentation does not establish comparative performance, pricing, or adoption statistics.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a website screenshot rather than a component test, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return an image or PDF; its browser capture can accept cookie banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capturing. Each step can be turned off.
For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
