ChromeOS includes a built-in Screen Capture tool for saving the whole display, a selected region, or one window. Open it with your Chromebook’s Screenshot key, Shift + Ctrl + Show windows, or the Screen Capture option in the time menu, then choose the capture mode you need.
Open Screen Capture
Chromebook keyboards are not identical, so use the first method that matches your hardware. Google’s current instructions are in Chromebook Help.

When the toolbar appears along the bottom of the screen, select Screenshot rather than the recording option.
Choose full-screen, partial, or window capture
The toolbar offers three screenshot areas. Pick the smallest area that contains what you need; this keeps unrelated tabs, notifications, and other windows out of the image.

Take a full-screen screenshot
- Open Screen Capture and select Screenshot.
- Choose the full-screen icon.
- If ChromeOS presents more than one display, select the display you want to capture.
- Confirm the capture. The image is copied to the clipboard and saved automatically.
Take a partial screenshot
- Open Screen Capture and choose the partial-region icon.
- Press and drag across the area to capture, then release.
- Refine the selection before confirming it. Press Space to change the selected section, press Tab to move focus to a corner handle, and use the arrow keys to adjust the highlighted edge.
- Confirm the region.
Keyboard adjustment is useful when a mouse or trackpad cannot place an edge precisely. Start the drag outside private information so the initial rectangle does not briefly include it.
Capture one window
- Open Screen Capture and select the window-capture icon.
- Select the browser or app window you want.
- Confirm the capture.
Window mode is usually the cleanest choice for support tickets because it excludes other open windows and the shelf.
Find and reuse the screenshot
Google says screenshots and recordings are automatically copied to your clipboard. Paste immediately into an email, document, chat, or image editor with Ctrl + V. ChromeOS also saves captures to the Downloads folder by default. To change that destination, open Screen Capture settings from the capture controls and choose another folder. The official workflow and storage behavior are documented in Google’s screenshot and recording guide.
If you need a permanent file, use the saved copy rather than relying on clipboard history. If the screenshot is going to be uploaded, check the image for visible account names, notifications, or private tabs before sharing.

Use tablet controls, a stylus, or accessibility features
Chromebook tablet shortcut
On a ChromeOS tablet, press Power + Volume down to capture the screen. You can also hold the Power button and choose Screen capture, or open Screen Capture from the time menu. Google lists these tablet paths in its Chromebook keyboard shortcuts documentation.
Supported touchscreen stylus
For a compatible stylus, open the stylus menu and choose Capture region, then touch, drag, and release. Choose Capture screen for the entire display. Support is device-specific: Google notes that Bluetooth styluses cannot be used with Chromebooks, and capacitive styluses may not work well. See Google’s stylus guidance before troubleshooting a pen that does not appear in the menu.
ChromeVox screen reader
With ChromeVox enabled, Google’s documented flow starts with Shift + Ctrl plus the relevant capture key. Press Tab to move among full-screen, partial, and window choices, then follow the spoken prompts to complete the capture. Record the screen from the same toolbar
Screen Capture also opens ChromeOS recording controls. You can record the full screen, a partial region, or one window. In the settings, choose whether to include device audio, microphone audio, or both, and whether to use the camera.

For a partial recording, the format menu offers .webm or .gif. GIF recordings do not include audio or video input. Stop with the on-screen Stop recording control or press Search + Shift + X. Recordings, like screenshots, are copied to the clipboard and saved to Downloads unless you select another folder.
Which capture method should you choose?
- Use full screen when the relationship between several visible windows matters.
- Use partial when only one area is relevant or when you need to remove private content.
- Use window when an app or browser window is the complete subject.
- Use the time-menu route when the keyboard layout is unfamiliar.
- Use tablet buttons or the stylus menu when your Chromebook is configured for touch input.
Google’s instructions describe the available workflows but do not establish a speed or image-quality ranking among these choices. The practical difference is what each mode includes.
Troubleshooting
The shortcut does nothing
Check whether your keyboard has a dedicated Screenshot key. If it does not, try Shift + Ctrl + Show windows, open the time menu and select Screen Capture, or use Ctrl + Shift + F5 with an external keyboard that lacks Show windows.
I cannot identify Show windows
Look for the key showing a rectangle next to two smaller rectangles. If the external keyboard has no equivalent key, use the Ctrl + Shift + F5 alternative or the on-screen time menu instead of guessing.

The partial rectangle is the wrong size
Before confirming, press Space to change the selected section, Tab to focus a corner handle, and use the arrow keys to move the highlighted edge. If the handles are difficult to reach, cancel and start the drag farther from the target edge.
The file is missing
Check Downloads first, then check the folder selected in Screen Capture settings. Also remember that the capture is copied to the clipboard; paste it into an editor to verify that the screenshot completed even if the file view has not refreshed.
A stylus is not offered as an option
Stylus capture depends on Chromebook and pen compatibility. Bluetooth styluses are not supported for this Chromebook workflow, and Google cautions that capacitive styluses may work poorly. Use the keyboard or time-menu method if the stylus menu lacks capture controls.
I need audio in a recording
Open the recording settings and choose device audio, microphone, or both. Do not choose GIF when audio or video input is required, because ChromeOS GIF recordings do not include either.
