For a JavaScript or TypeScript Playwright project using Applitools’ Fixtures integration, install @applitools/eyes-playwright, run npx eyes-playwright setup, set APPLITOOLS_API_KEY, then import the Applitools test fixture and add an eyes.check() checkpoint where you want to verify appearance. The fixture manages Eyes’ open/close lifecycle; the Eyes service compares captured states with saved baselines so your team can review visual differences. This guide follows that Fixtures path; other supported languages and the Standard JavaScript API use different setup details.

Check which Playwright SDK variant fits your project

Applitools documents Playwright integrations for TypeScript Fixtures, TypeScript Standard, Java, C#, and Python. The imports and setup below are specifically for the JavaScript/TypeScript Fixtures workflow; do not copy them unchanged into another language or the Standard JavaScript integration. Check the applicable instructions in the Applitools SDK directory before adapting the example.

Fixtures suit teams that want the integration to manage Eyes setup and test-result collection around each Playwright test. The updated workflow handles Eyes.open() and Eyes.close() for you, rather than requiring that repeated lifecycle code in each test. If the suite needs explicit API control, review the Standard integration instead of assuming the fixture API is interchangeable.

Install and initialize the Fixtures integration

  1. From the root of the existing Playwright project, install the package:
    npm install @applitools/eyes-playwright
  2. Run the setup wizard:
    npx eyes-playwright setup
  3. Review the generated files, imports, and Playwright configuration. The setup command can configure the project and add a demo visual test; ensure those changes match your repository’s existing test structure and conventions.
  4. Supply an Applitools API key. Set APPLITOOLS_API_KEY in the environment used to run tests, or enter the key during guided setup. Keep credentials out of configuration files committed to version control. See Applitools’ API-key guidance.

For example, set the environment variable in the shell or CI secret configuration that launches Playwright. The exact mechanism depends on the runner; the important point is that the key is present in the test process environment, not embedded in a tracked source file.

Add a visual checkpoint to a Playwright test

Import test from the Fixtures entry point, receive both page and eyes from the test fixture, navigate to the state you want to verify, and call eyes.check() with a descriptive checkpoint name.

import { test } from '@applitools/eyes-playwright/fixture';

test('Homepage visual check', async ({ page, eyes }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com');
  await eyes.check('Homepage', {
    fully: true,
    matchLevel: 'Strict',
  });
});

This is the documented fixture/checkpoint pattern. Replace the URL with your application and capture a stable, meaningful page state. A visual checkpoint complements ordinary Playwright assertions: use visual comparison for appearance, and keep text, state, and behavior checks as programmatic assertions when those are what the test must validate.

Choose the checkpoint scope and comparison behavior

The integration exposes options to tailor what Eyes captures and how it compares the result. Select only the controls needed for the particular interface and test purpose.

  • fully: capture the full page rather than only the currently visible viewport.
  • matchLevel: choose the comparison sensitivity appropriate to the checkpoint. The example uses 'Strict'; available values and exact behavior should be confirmed in the integration documentation for the SDK version in use.
  • Target region: focus a checkpoint on a specific part of the page when a full-page comparison is not useful.
  • Ignored regions: exclude areas that should not affect the visual result.
  • Floating regions: identify content that can move while remaining visually acceptable.
  • Displacement handling: configure treatment of content shifted relative to its baseline where the test requires it.

Keep checkpoint names descriptive and consistent—for example, identify the page and state rather than labeling every capture “Screenshot.” A clear name helps reviewers locate the relevant baseline and result.

Configure reporting and shared Eyes behavior

The integration guide shows shared configuration through eyesConfig, including appName and failTestsOnDiff. Set a stable application name and decide deliberately whether a detected visual difference should fail the Playwright test run. The setting should reflect the team’s review workflow, not merely make the suite green.

The guide also configures the Applitools reporter in playwright.config.ts using @applitools/eyes-playwright/reporter. This provides an enhanced HTML report that presents Eyes results alongside Playwright reporting. Follow the reporter configuration for the project’s SDK version rather than guessing a config shape from another integration.

Authentication is required to accept or reject baseline changes. Ensure the people responsible for reviewing visual updates can access the relevant Applitools results.

Review differences and manage baselines

For each checkpoint, the SDK captures the rendered state and the Eyes service compares it with a saved baseline. Differences are surfaced for review in the test manager or report. Accept a difference only when the appearance change is intended; accepting updates the baseline used by subsequent runs. Reject an unintended change so the existing expected appearance remains the reference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Baseline review is part of the test’s maintenance, not a substitute for deciding whether the UI change is correct. When a page changes intentionally, review the affected checkpoints and update only the baselines that should change.

Organize visual tests as the suite grows

For repeated flows, the integration guide shows putting visual checks in page-object methods or fixtures. That keeps capture conventions near the page or shared setup they belong to and avoids duplicating checkpoint logic across tests. Keep names and checkpoint scope consistent enough that reviewers can understand what changed without opening every test.

Use the fixture lifecycle for routine tests, but preserve explicit Playwright assertions for functional conditions. For example, a screenshot can catch an unexpected layout change, while an assertion should still verify a dynamically changing status or required text when that condition is part of the test requirement.

Migrate an existing Eyes suite gradually

Applitools’ updated setup article, dated March 11, 2026, describes the updated SDK as backward compatible and recommends a gradual transition: begin with simpler tests, validate the migration, and optionally run both SDK approaches while comparing results. Do not assume that generated setup, configuration, or imports are identical across SDK variants. Migrate a small set first, confirm its checkpoints and reporting, then expand the change.

Troubleshooting common setup problems

  • Cannot resolve the fixture import: confirm that @applitools/eyes-playwright is installed in the project running Playwright and that the test imports @applitools/eyes-playwright/fixture. The fixture import is not a universal import for every Applitools language or JavaScript API variant.
  • Eyes cannot authorize a test run: make sure APPLITOOLS_API_KEY is available to the process executing the tests, including the CI job. Use the environment or secret mechanism for that runner and avoid committing the key.
  • Visual differences appear after an intended UI change: review the checkpoint in the Eyes results and accept the new appearance only if it is the desired one. Acceptance changes the baseline for later runs.
  • Too much of the page is being compared: narrow the checkpoint to a target region or use ignored regions for irrelevant content; use full-page capture only when the whole page is the intended comparison.
  • Moving content causes noisy differences: identify whether the content should be ignored or treated as a floating region, then configure the corresponding checkpoint option. Do not suppress an area if its movement is itself a defect the test should catch.
  • The HTML report does not show the expected Eyes results: verify the Applitools reporter setup in playwright.config.ts against the integration guide and confirm that tests are using the expected fixture.
  • Setup instructions do not match the project: re-check the selected SDK variant. TypeScript Fixtures, TypeScript Standard, Java, C#, and Python have distinct integration paths.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot endpoint rather than a visual-regression test suite, ScreenshotNeo is a separate option: one GET request with a URL returns an image or PDF, while Applitools’ workflow here adds checkpoints and baseline review to Playwright tests. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Applitools Playwright Fixtures example apply to Python, Java, or C#?

No. Applitools documents separate Playwright SDK variants for TypeScript Fixtures, TypeScript Standard, Java, C#, and Python. Use the instructions and imports for the language and SDK variant in your project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens when I accept a visual difference?

The accepted appearance becomes the baseline used in later runs.

Can I use visual checks instead of Playwright assertions?

Use visual checks for appearance. Keep Playwright assertions for dynamic text, state, and behavior your test must validate programmatically.
