Use a targeted region when a visual test should judge a particular component or area rather than the entire page. In Playwright with Applitools Eyes, pass a locator as region to eyes.check(). For a full-page comparison with expected dynamic content, an ignoreRegions mask can exclude that content—but changes inside the mask will no longer be detected by that comparison.

What a targeted region does

A visual test captures a page or component and compares it with a saved baseline. Targeting narrows the comparison to an area that matters, such as a navigation bar, checkout summary, or status panel. It helps make an assertion more focused; it does not, by itself, make the selected area less sensitive to visual changes.

Keep three behaviors distinct:

  • Target a region: compare a selected component or area, rather than the whole page.
  • Ignore a region: omit its contents from the comparison. This avoids failures from changes outside the test’s purpose, but also hides unintended changes within the ignored area.
  • Use a reduced-sensitivity match: retain a comparison while allowing a different class of changes, where the tool supports it. This can be preferable when layout matters but exact pixels do not.

How do I test only one component visually?

Applitools’ Playwright integration accepts a Playwright locator as the region option to eyes.check(). The vendor recommends meaningful checkpoint names so results are identifiable in the Applitools Dashboard. Its documentation also lists floatingRegions and IgnoreDisplacements as region-related options. See the Applitools Playwright documentation for the current setup and API details.

import { test } from '@applitools/eyes-playwright/fixture';

test('navigation visual check', async ({ page, eyes }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com');

  const navbar = page.locator('nav');
  await eyes.check('Primary navigation', {
    region: navbar,
  });
});

Replace the example URL and selector with your application and the component under test. The selector should identify the intended component unambiguously; if it matches multiple elements, narrow it or use a locator that resolves to the right one. A locator-based target follows the element rather than defining a fixed rectangle, but it still depends on the element being present and locatable when the check runs.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How to handle known dynamic content

First decide whether the changing material is irrelevant to this assertion. If it is, use a narrowly scoped ignore region. For a full-page Applitools check, its Playwright example uses fully: true, matchLevel: 'Strict', and an ignored locator:

await eyes.check('Product page, excluding rotating content', {
  fully: true,
  matchLevel: 'Strict',
  ignoreRegions: [page.locator('.dynamic-content')],
});

The selector is illustrative: choose the smallest region that contains only content you intentionally do not want this assertion to compare. Avoid masking an entire parent container when stable labels, prices, disclosures, or controls inside it remain important.

Dynamic does not mean unimportant. A timestamp may be irrelevant to a layout check, while a changing price, legal disclosure, or key status indicator may need its own assertion or visual check. Prefer deterministic test data or a separate semantic assertion when the value itself matters. A mask should express the test’s scope, not silence a failing check without understanding the change.

Should I ignore a region or compare it at a different match level?

Ignoring is an all-or-nothing choice for the ignored pixels: the assertion stops detecting visual changes there. A region-specific match level keeps a comparison but evaluates it differently. Applitools describes using a Layout match for a changing ad within a page otherwise checked strictly. Its documentation states that a specific region match level can be set only when the global match level is not Layout. Consult the Applitools Match Regions article for the supported configuration and constraints.

Choosing a region definition

Region targeting is tool-specific. The main practical distinction is whether the boundary follows a DOM element or is supplied as a selector, XPath, or fixed coordinates.

Definition How it works What to watch
Element or locator Pass a framework locator for the component, as in Applitools’ Playwright region example. The element must exist at capture time and identify the intended component.
CSS selector or XPath Percy Playwright documents selector- and XPath-based ignored regions through ignoreRegionSelectors and ignoreRegionXpaths. Selectors must continue to identify only the intended content as the page changes.
Coordinates or custom bounds Percy documents custom coordinate regions with top, right, bottom, and left boundaries, and bounding boxes with x, y, width, and height. Fixed boundaries can cover the wrong content after responsive changes, layout shifts, or viewport changes. Recheck them when layout changes.

These are documented capabilities of the respective tools, not interchangeable configuration names. Refer to the Percy Playwright repository for its current options and coordinate formats. Applitools’ Regions Only page describes its element-based workflow and responsive relocation; those are vendor descriptions of that product’s behavior.

A practical workflow for reliable region checks

  1. Stabilize the test where practical. Use repeatable test data, a consistent viewport, and controlled timing or animation so the check measures UI changes rather than incidental variation. These are general testing practices; region options alone do not stabilize an application.
  2. Name the checkpoint and identify the risk. Decide which component or visual behavior the check should protect, then give the check a meaningful name.
  3. Choose the smallest useful scope. Use a component region for a component assertion. For a page-wide assertion, ignore only known content that is genuinely out of scope.
  4. Select comparison behavior deliberately. Use a full ignore only when changes inside the region need not be detected. If structure matters, consider a supported reduced-sensitivity match or a separate assertion.
  5. Review every visual diff. Applitools’ enhanced HTML report supports side-by-side visual comparison and accepting or rejecting changes. Accepting a changed checkpoint updates the baseline; rejecting it marks the test as failed. Accept a change only when it is an intended UI change.
  6. Revisit regions as the interface evolves. An ignored area can gain important content, and a coordinate boundary can become misaligned. Review masks and targets when the page or component changes.

Common problems and fixes

  • The check fails because content changes on each run: determine whether the content is truly irrelevant. If it is, narrowly ignore it; otherwise stabilize its test data or assert its meaning separately.
  • The wrong content is ignored: the selector may be too broad or the coordinate rectangle may no longer match the intended area. Narrow the selector or update and verify the bounds at the test viewport.
  • A component check does not capture the intended element: verify that the locator resolves to the correct element after navigation and that the component is rendered before the check.
  • A real defect passes unnoticed: inspect whether an ignore region covers meaningful content. Remove or shrink the mask, or add a separate assertion for the hidden behavior.
  • A legitimate UI change keeps failing against the baseline: review the diff, then accept the checkpoint only if the change is intended; otherwise reject it and investigate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a targeted region detect changes outside the selected component?

No. A component-region assertion is scoped to its target; use a separate page-level check if surrounding layout also needs coverage.

Does ignoring a dynamic region make the whole visual test less strict?

No. An ignored region is excluded, while the rest of the compared page can retain its configured match behavior.

Can I use region targeting for mobile layouts?

Yes, but run checks at the viewports your product supports and verify that selectors or coordinate bounds still identify the intended content at each layout.
