Run your encoder as a foreground systemd service and set Restart=on-failure with a deliberate RestartSec= delay. That lets systemd relaunch the encoder after an unsuccessful exit, but it cannot fix a bad YouTube stream key, a broken network, or an unhealthy audio/video feed. You must monitor those separately.
What systemd can—and cannot—recover
systemd supervises a process on your Linux machine. If the encoder exits unsuccessfully, a service configured with Restart=on-failure can start it again after a pause. The encoder must remain in the foreground as the service’s main process so systemd can observe its exit.
This is process recovery, not a guarantee that viewers will see an uninterrupted broadcast. A restart does not repair incorrect encoder settings, restore a failed internet connection, refresh an invalid stream key, or verify that YouTube is receiving healthy video and audio. YouTube’s Live Control Room remains the place to check stream health and event status.

Configure your encoder to send its feed to the YouTube server URL using that key. YouTube describes the stream key as a credential that identifies the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Keep it secret; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.

If you reset the key, update the value stored for the encoder before restarting the service.

Review the event’s auto-start and auto-stop settings in Live Control Room. These YouTube settings govern whether the encoder can start or stop streaming; systemd only supervises the local encoder process.

Use YouTube’s published encoder guidance for supported ingest settings, codecs, resolutions, and bitrates. There is no universal encoder command or bitrate that applies to every encoder, stream, and network.
Create a systemd service for the encoder
Use a unit template, not a copy-and-paste encoder command
The following is an illustrative unit skeleton, not a tested, ready-to-run configuration. Replace the executable, arguments, account, working directory, and secret-handling approach with values appropriate to your encoder and Linux distribution. Do not put a real stream key in a unit file that is readable by other users.

WantedBy=multi-user.targetSave the unit under the service-unit directory used by your distribution—for example, a system service is commonly stored in /etc/systemd/system/. Choose a descriptive filename ending in .service, such as youtube-encoder.service. The example’s 60-second interval, five-start burst, and five-second restart delay are sample policy values, not universal recommendations.
Set the account and working directory deliberately
For a system service, add an appropriate User= and, if needed, Group= under [Service]. Use WorkingDirectory= if the encoder expects relative paths for media, configuration, or logs. Ensure that account can read the media and configuration it needs, and write any required state or log files. The exact settings depend on your encoder and how you manage its credentials.

Keep the encoder in the foreground
Type=simple is suitable for the template when the encoder starts directly and stays attached to the service. Avoid launching it through a shell command that backgrounds the process or exits while a detached encoder continues running: systemd needs to track the actual encoder as the service’s main process. Use the encoder’s own documented foreground mode and arguments.
Load, enable, and inspect the service

After saving the unit file, ask systemd to reload unit definitions:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. -
Start the service:
sudo systemctl start youtube-encoder.service. -
Check its current state and recent status details:

To have the service start at boot, enable it:
sudo systemctl enable youtube-encoder.service. Enabling and starting are separate actions; usesudo systemctl enable --now youtube-encoder.serviceif you intend to do both at once. -
Follow the service journal while diagnosing startup or runtime problems:
sudo journalctl -u youtube-encoder.service -f. PressCtrl+Cto stop following the log.
Confirm that the encoder is running and that YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream before relying on the service for a broadcast. Test with representative audio and video, then monitor Live Control Room’s health indicator and messages during the event.

Choose restart timing and rate limits
What the restart directives mean

RestartSec=5spauses for five seconds before a restart in this example. Set a delay that makes sense for the likely failure: repeatedly relaunching an encoder while a dependency or network is unavailable can create a rapid cycle of failed starts. -
StartLimitIntervalSec=60sandStartLimitBurst=5in the example limit how many starts systemd allows within the specified interval. These values determine when retry attempts may be rate limited; they do not count livestream recoveries.
The current upstream systemd manager manual documents a default start-rate limit of five starts in ten seconds. That is a documented default, not a guarantee for every distribution: unit settings and manager configuration can change the effective limit.
Optional delay growth depends on systemd version
Newer systemd versions document RestartSteps= and RestartMaxDelaySec= for stepped growth in restart delays, and RestartRandomizedDelaySec= for adding a randomized delay. Check the manual installed on your system before using these directives; they are not available on every systemd version. For a simple configuration, a fixed RestartSec= is easier to understand and troubleshoot.

The encoder exits immediately or keeps restarting

Read
sudo systemctl status youtube-encoder.serviceandsudo journalctl -u youtube-encoder.service -n 100 --no-pagerfor the exit status and encoder error messages. -
Verify the executable path, arguments, permissions, working directory, and access to media and configuration. Test the encoder invocation in the foreground as the same account used by the service.

If a dependency remains unavailable, increase the restart delay or use a suitable stepped delay on a systemd version that supports it. A short fixed delay can cause repeated attempts without addressing the underlying fault.
The service is rate limited
When repeated failures exceed the effective start-rate limit, inspect the status and journal, correct the underlying cause, then clear the failed state or start the service again as appropriate for your system. Do not treat a larger burst limit as a fix for an encoder or network failure.
The process runs, but YouTube shows an error or unhealthy stream

Check Live Control Room’s stream-health indicator and messages, and inspect the encoder’s own logs. A process that remains alive can still send invalid or incomplete audio/video.

Check encoder errors and CPU load, and verify the outbound network connection. YouTube recommends using an updated encoder and testing with representative audio and video before a planned broadcast.

If YouTube reports an encoder startup error, check whether a new stream key is needed and copy the current key into the encoder’s configuration. Keep the key secret.

Review the event’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. A restarted encoder process does not by itself determine how YouTube handles the event or how quickly viewers reconnect.
