Switchboard Live relays a stream; it does not play or store your prerecorded videos. To run them continuously on YouTube, use a separate encoder that can play the files and send its output to the ingest endpoint shown in your Switchboard workflow. Once Switchboard detects the incoming video, you can take the YouTube destination live.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to live stream, with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned start.
- A prerecorded video or playlist, plus an encoder that can play it continuously and send a live feed. Switchboard names OBS, Ecamm, and Switcher Studio as examples. Switchboard does not host or play the video files.
- Access to the correct YouTube channel and its authorization through Switchboard.
- Rights to every video, music track, and other element in the broadcast.
Switchboard’s FAQ describes RTMP ingest, while its workflow documentation also presents RTMP, RTMPS, and SRT as selectable protocols. Use the endpoint and protocol shown in the specific workflow you configure; do not assume every account or encoder offers every option.
Set up the 24/7 stream
- Enable YouTube live streaming. In YouTube, complete the channel’s live-stream setup and check that it is eligible. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. A live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days can affect eligibility.
- Prepare the playout encoder. Open an encoder that supports prerecorded playback, select the video or playlist, and configure it to transmit to Switchboard. Switchboard’s FAQ lists OBS, Ecamm, and Switcher Studio as examples. The exact playback and looping controls depend on the encoder; Switchboard does not supply those controls or store the source video.
- Connect the YouTube destination. In the relevant Stream Group, select Add Destinations, then Connect More. Choose YouTube, authorize the correct channel, and enable it in the group.
- Configure the encoder’s Switchboard connection. In the Switchboard workflow, copy the displayed ingest URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Select the protocol shown there. Treat the stream key as private. If you reset it, replace the key in the encoder before the next broadcast.
- Start the prerecorded playout and confirm the feed. Start playback in the encoder. In Switchboard, verify that the confidence monitor shows the video and that the receiving status is active. The destination’s Go Live control remains inactive until Switchboard detects incoming video.
- Take the YouTube destination live. Select the connected YouTube destination and press Go Live. If you plan to use a Stream Group’s Auto-Start setting, configure it before sending video and test its behavior before relying on it for an unattended broadcast.
- Plan for recovery and recording. Keep a way to check the encoder and destination while the stream runs. Switchboard says it does not archive the video. YouTube can automatically archive streams under 12 hours, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving a replay matters, use shorter sessions or make a local recording backup.
Encoder settings: what to configure and what not to guess
Switchboard’s documented workflow tells you to use the ingest URL, stream key, and protocol displayed for that workflow. The available setup information does not establish a universal bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or keyframe interval for every encoder and workflow. Do not copy arbitrary values from another setup: use the settings supported by your encoder and the current instructions for the selected ingest path. Confirm receipt in Switchboard’s confidence monitor before taking the destination live.
Copyright, monetization, and YouTube archives
Clear rights for the complete broadcast
YouTube’s livestream terms say the provider represents that it has the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights, and must comply with applicable laws and YouTube guidelines. Check rights for all footage, music, graphics, and other included material before broadcasting it continuously.

Being live does not guarantee monetization
YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams. The policy expects original and authentic content; mass-produced or repetitive material may be ineligible. Reused content needs meaningful original commentary, substantial changes, or educational or entertainment value, and reviewers may assess the channel as a whole. YouTube identifies July 15, 2025 as the date it clarified the repetitious-content policy and renamed it inauthentic content. Even when live-stream monetization is enabled, ad slots are not guaranteed to serve.
Do not rely on one continuous day-long replay
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Switchboard does not provide an archive. If you need a complete replay, divide the broadcast into shorter sessions or record a local copy.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube cannot be enabled for the planned broadcast | Live streaming has not been activated yet, or the channel has a restriction affecting eligibility. | Complete YouTube’s live-stream setup in advance; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility and any live-streaming restriction from the previous 90 days. |
| Switchboard’s monitor shows no picture, or Go Live is inactive | The encoder is not sending video to the selected workflow, or its ingest settings do not match the displayed endpoint, key, or protocol. | Check that playback is running, then compare the encoder’s ingest URL, stream key, and protocol with the values shown in Switchboard. Wait for the monitor and receiving status to confirm the feed. |
| The feed reaches Switchboard, but the YouTube destination is not ready | The destination may not be connected, authorized for the intended channel, or enabled in the Stream Group. | Open the relevant Stream Group, connect or reauthorize the correct YouTube channel under Add Destinations and Connect More, and enable it. |
| The encoder stops sending or the prerecorded video does not continue | Playback or transmission stopped in the separate encoder; Switchboard does not play or store the source files. | Check the encoder’s playback and continuous-playback configuration, restore the feed, and verify it in Switchboard before taking the destination live again. |
| The archive is incomplete or missing after a long broadcast | A YouTube stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured as an archive. | For future broadcasts, use shorter sessions or make a local recording backup rather than relying on a single continuous session’s replay. |
Dedicated hardware as another playout route
YouTube’s verified encoder listing names the AJA HELO Plus and says its PlayToStream functionality can schedule prerecorded media and stream directly to YouTube Live without a computer. That is an option to investigate if you specifically want dedicated hardware. The available information does not establish current Amazon availability or confirm that this unit integrates with Switchboard in the workflow described above.
