To create a signed screenshot URL, build the exact request on a trusted server, canonicalize its path and query parameters exactly as the provider specifies, sign that canonical string with the required key and algorithm, then append the expiry and signature fields. Give the resulting HTTPS URL to the browser, an <img> tag, an email, or a report. The consumer does not need your API key, but anyone who obtains the live URL can use it until it expires.
The critical rule is that the bytes you sign must be identical to the bytes the provider verifies. A changed target URL, reordered parameter, different encoding, or altered expiry produces an invalid signature.
What a signed URL authorizes
A signed URL is a bearer credential in the query string. It normally contains the screenshot request, an expiration time, and a cryptographic signature. Whoever possesses an active link can perform the permitted operation, so treat it like a temporary password rather than a public image URL.
Depending on the service, the URL either starts a new browser render or retrieves an image that was already rendered. That distinction affects caching, source-page changes, retention, and the status codes you should expect.

The five-step signing sequence
- Construct one complete request. Include the target URL and every rendering option that affects authorization, such as viewport, device preset, dimensions, output format, or page range.
- Canonicalize it. Apply the provider’s required path, parameter ordering, escaping, and encoding rules. Do not sign a human-readable version and send a differently encoded version.
- Add an expiry. Use the shortest lifetime that covers the workflow. The expiry must be included in the signed data when the provider requires it.
- Generate the signature on a trusted server. Keep HMAC secrets and private keys out of browser JavaScript, mobile apps, source control, and logs.
- Append the signature exactly as documented. Some providers require a specific field name, encoding, or position. Apple’s Web Snapshots example requires
signatureto be the final query parameter; changing or reordering parameters requires a new signature.
Canonicalization: the part most integrations get wrong
Sort and encode before signing
A common HMAC design sorts query keys alphabetically, percent-encodes names and values, joins them with &, and excludes the signature field from the input. The provider then computes the same digest. Sorting after signing, encoding spaces differently, or signing an unescaped target URL causes a mismatch.
Sign every security-relevant option. If width, output format, or a CSS selector changes what is rendered, leaving it outside the signature lets someone alter the request without authorization.
Use the provider’s algorithm, not a substitute
SnapAPI documents HMAC-SHA256 over an alphabetically sorted canonical query string. Apple’s documented snapshot flow signs the request path and all query parameters with ES256, an elliptic-curve signature scheme. These formats are not interchangeable: a valid HMAC cannot satisfy an ES256 verifier.
Include the path when required
Some schemes sign only a canonical query string; others sign the HTTP path plus the query. Read the provider’s signing specification and reproduce its exact newline, slash, and encoding rules. A path such as /v1/screenshot is not equivalent to /v1/screenshot/ if the path is part of the signature.

Runnable generic HMAC examples
The following examples produce a canonical query and HMAC-SHA256 signature. They intentionally leave the provider endpoint and parameter names to your service’s documentation. Replace the names only where that provider specifies different fields, digest encoding, or a path-included canonical string.
Python
import base64
import hashlib
import hmac
import os
import time
from urllib.parse import quote, urlencode
secret = os.environ["SIGNING_SECRET"].encode("utf-8")
target_url = os.environ["TARGET_URL"]
expires = str(int(time.time()) + 300) # five minutes
params = {
"expires": expires,
"format": "png",
"url": target_url,
"width": "1280",
}
# Many providers require alphabetical ordering and RFC 3986 encoding.
canonical = urlencode(sorted(params.items()), quote_via=quote, safe="")
digest = hmac.new(secret, canonical.encode("utf-8"), hashlib.sha256).digest()
signature = base64.urlsafe_b64encode(digest).rstrip(b"=").decode("ascii")
# The signature is excluded from the input and appended last.
signed_query = canonical + "&signature=" + quote(signature, safe="")
print(signed_query)
Use the printed query with the provider’s documented HTTPS path. Some APIs expect hexadecimal HMAC output instead of base64url, or require the path to be prepended before hashing; change those details to match the specification.
Node.js
import crypto from "node:crypto";
const secret = Buffer.from(process.env.SIGNING_SECRET, "utf8");
const targetUrl = process.env.TARGET_URL;
const expires = Math.floor(Date.now() / 1000) + 300;
const params = new URLSearchParams([
["expires", String(expires)],
["format", "png"],
["url", targetUrl],
["width", "1280"]
]);
// URLSearchParams preserves insertion order, so sort explicitly.
const sorted = [...params.entries()].sort(([a], [b]) => a.localeCompare(b));
const canonical = new URLSearchParams(sorted).toString();
const signature = crypto
.createHmac("sha256", secret)
.update(canonical, "utf8")
.digest("base64url");
console.log(`${canonical}&signature=${encodeURIComponent(signature)}`);
If the provider signs a path as well, construct the exact canonical path-plus-query string before calling createHmac. Do not use a framework’s decoded query object if it has already changed plus signs, percent escapes, or duplicate keys.

How long should a signed screenshot URL remain valid?
Choose an expiry based on how the link is delivered. A server-to-server handoff may need only 60–300 seconds. An email or report assembled immediately before delivery may need several hours. A public embed that must survive a day needs a longer window, but increases the period in which a leaked URL can be used.
| Provider or service | Expiry behavior documented | What the link does | Invalid or expired response |
|---|---|---|---|
| RenderScreenshot | CLI defaults to 24 hours; configurable up to 30 days | GET screenshot endpoint renders using the signed request | Authorization failure (provider-specific status) |
| ScreenshotRun | expires_in is 1–43,200 minutes; 0 creates a permanent link while the image exists |
Creates a link after a screenshot reaches completed; serves the stored image |
403 for expired or invalid links; 410 if the image was deleted |
| SnapRender | expires_in is 60–2,592,000 seconds |
POST /v1/screenshot/sign returns a URL handled by a separate rendering endpoint |
410 for expiry; 403 for tampering |
| Google Cloud Storage V4 | Maximum documented expiry is 604800 seconds (7 days) | Reads an already stored object | Provider-specific authentication or not-found response |
These are provider configuration limits, not guarantees that a link will remain available: stored images can be deleted, retention policies can remove them, and keys can be rotated. A permanent link is still dependent on the image existing and the signing key remaining accepted.
Putting a signed URL in an image or report
HTML image embeds
After your server creates the URL, place it in an img element without exposing the signing secret:
<img src="SIGNED_URL_FROM_YOUR_SERVER" alt="Rendered page">
Use HTTPS. Remember that browsers, referrer headers, reverse proxies, and monitoring systems may record the complete query string. Set an appropriate referrer policy, avoid third-party analytics on pages containing sensitive links, and redact query strings in application logs.

Email and downloadable reports
Generate links as close as possible to delivery. For a report that may be forwarded, use a lifetime that covers the expected reading period rather than making the URL permanent. If recipients need reliable long-term access, store the image behind your own authenticated download endpoint and issue a fresh signed URL on each request.
What happens when someone changes the parameters?
Any change to a signed field—target URL, width, format, expiry, selector, or parameter order when order is significant—usually causes verification to fail. Apple explicitly requires a new signature after modifying or reordering query parameters. This behavior is the protection: the consumer cannot silently turn a small screenshot into a different, more expensive, or unauthorized render.
Do not “fix” a failed URL by sorting or decoding it in the browser. Recreate the request on your server, apply the provider’s canonicalization rules once, and sign the final representation.
Troubleshooting signed screenshot links
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 401 or 403 immediately | Wrong secret, algorithm, signature encoding, or canonical order | Compare the exact bytes being hashed with the provider’s example; verify whether the path is included and whether the signature field is excluded. |
| Works until a parameter is added | The new parameter was not included in the signed input | Add every security-relevant parameter before canonicalization and regenerate the signature. |
| Only URLs containing spaces or non-ASCII characters fail | Different percent-encoding or Unicode normalization | Encode with the provider’s required RFC rules before signing; do not sign a decoded string and send an encoded one. |
| Apple request is rejected even with the right key | signature is not the final parameter, or parameters were reordered |
Rebuild the query and append signature last, then sign the exact path and query required by Apple. |
| Link suddenly returns 410 | The link expired or the stored screenshot was deleted | Generate a new link; for stored-image services, verify retention and deletion jobs. |
| Link works on one machine but not another | Clock skew, cached URL, or a proxy rewriting the query string | Use server time, keep a safety margin before expiry, disable query rewriting, and inspect the raw URL received by the provider. |
| Secret appears in frontend source | Signing was performed in browser code | Move signing to a trusted backend and return only the short-lived URL. |
Choosing between signed screenshot services
Compare more than the hash algorithm. Confirm where signing runs, whether a URL triggers a render or serves a stored image, the maximum lifetime, deletion behavior, screenshot options, and the documented status codes for tampering and expiry.

Operational checklist
- Sign on a backend using HTTPS and a secret or private key stored in a secret manager.
- Include the exact path, target URL, expiry, and every security-relevant rendering option in the canonical input.
- Use the provider’s required algorithm, sort order, escaping, digest encoding, and signature position.
- Choose the shortest practical lifetime and account for clock skew.
- Redact full signed URLs from logs and analytics; treat them as bearer credentials.
- Test altered parameters, expired links, deleted images, non-ASCII URLs, and duplicate requests.
- Rotate signing keys when a URL may have leaked; individual bearer links generally cannot be revoked.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a signed URL encrypt the screenshot or its query string?
No. Signing authenticates the permitted request and limits its lifetime; it does not encrypt the URL or image. Use HTTPS and your provider’s access controls for confidentiality.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Should I cache a signed screenshot URL?
Cache only when the remaining lifetime and the provider’s render-versus-stored-image behavior fit your workflow. A cached URL can outlive the page state you expected, while a fresh URL lets your server apply current authorization and retention rules.
How should I log failures without leaking credentials?
Record the provider, status code, expiry timestamp, request identifier, and a hash or redacted form of the URL. Do not store the complete query string containing the live signature.
