Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To serve a private image with a signed URL, first authenticate the viewer and authorize access to that specific image on your server. Then generate a short-lived URL with your storage provider or CDN, deliver it only over HTTPS, and keep the signing credentials private. Anyone who obtains the URL may be able to use it until it expires or the relevant signing credentials are invalidated, so treat it like a temporary password—not like a permanent public image address.
What a signed image URL does—and does not do
A signed URL is a URL containing a cryptographic signature and, typically, a policy or expiry that the storage service or CDN checks when the URL is requested. If the signature and policy are valid, the provider serves the specified resource. The application must still decide whether the requester is entitled to receive that URL in the first place. AWS describes this as an application authorization step followed by CloudFront validation of the signed URL; Google Cloud Storage likewise warns that anyone who knows a signed URL can use it until it expires or the signing key is rotated.
A signed URL is therefore a bearer credential: possession can be enough to access the image. It does not identify the person using it, and it does not make a leaked URL safe. It also does not automatically prevent access through another route. If the object remains publicly reachable at its origin, a viewer may bypass the signed delivery path entirely.
Provider implementations are not interchangeable. The steps below describe the security design and call out documented AWS and Google Cloud behavior; use the chosen provider’s signing libraries and canonicalization rules rather than adapting one provider’s signature algorithm to another.

Issue access in a secure sequence
- Keep the image private at its origin. For an S3 origin behind CloudFront, configure origin access restrictions so viewers must use the distribution instead of requesting the object directly from S3. See CloudFront private content overview.
- Authenticate the requester and check object-level permission. Do this in trusted application code before creating or returning a URL. Do not rely on possession of a user’s application session alone if that user is not entitled to the particular image.
- Sign on a trusted server or service. Use the provider’s supported signing process. Never put private signing keys or cloud credentials in browser code, an app bundle, or a URL.
- Scope the grant narrowly. Limit it to the intended image or resource and choose an expiry that fits the viewer’s task. Do not assume there is one universally correct duration; account for page loading, retries, and any image transformation requests.
- Return and request the final URL over HTTPS. Avoid logging or exposing the URL where it is not needed: a copied URL may be usable by someone else until its effective expiry.
- Preserve the signed request exactly. Include all required query parameters when signing. Do not append or alter parameters afterward. AWS documents that a query string added after signing a CloudFront URL can cause an HTTP 403.
- Verify the complete access path. Test valid access, an expired URL, a changed query string, an unauthorized requester, and a direct-origin request. Also test retries or range requests if your application expects them. These are recommended checks, not a claim that a particular deployment has been tested.
How long should a signed image URL last?
Use the shortest validity window that still allows the intended image request to complete reliably. Consider when the viewer opens the page, whether the browser may retry, and whether the image pipeline makes follow-up requests. A very short window can make a slow load or retry fail; a long window gives anyone who obtains the URL more time to use it. The right value depends on the workflow and provider, so validate it against the actual client and delivery path.
AWS expiry depends on the signing credentials
For Amazon S3 presigned URLs, the AWS CLI or SDK can configure a duration of up to seven days, but that is not a promise that every URL remains usable for seven days. If the URL was signed with temporary credentials, it can stop working earlier when those credentials expire, are revoked, deleted, or deactivated. S3 and CloudFront evaluate expiry when a request starts: an in-progress transfer that began before expiry can finish, but a retry that starts after expiry can fail. See Amazon S3 presigned URL duration and expiry and CloudFront expiry checks.
Google Cloud URLs can be used by anyone who receives them
Google Cloud Storage says that anyone who knows a signed URL can access its resource until expiry or signing-key rotation. That means a URL copied into a message, browser history, application log, or other exposed location should be treated as a credential, not as an identity-bound permission. Google Cloud CDN recommends signing only HTTPS URLs so the signature is not intercepted in transit. See Cloud Storage signed URL access and Cloud CDN signed URLs.

Signed URLs or signed cookies?
For CloudFront, choose based on how many protected resources a viewer needs and what the client can handle. AWS recommends signed URLs for individual files. Signed cookies suit access to multiple restricted files, such as video segments, or a design that keeps existing resource URLs unchanged. CloudFront gives signed URLs precedence if both mechanisms apply to the same request. Confirm equivalent rules with another provider rather than assuming CloudFront behavior applies everywhere. See CloudFront signed URL versus cookie guidance.

Protect the origin and understand CDN caching
CDN authorization is incomplete if users can fetch the same private object directly from a public storage origin. AWS recommends restricting an S3 origin so viewers access content through the specified CloudFront distribution rather than bypassing it with direct S3 URLs. Apply the equivalent origin-access controls for the storage and CDN products you use; do not assume a signed CDN URL automatically makes the origin private.

Do not infer signed-request caching behavior from origin cache headers alone. Google Cloud CDN documents that it caches signed requests regardless of the backend’s Cache-Control header. Check the CDN’s signed-request and cache-key configuration and verify that its actual behavior matches the privacy and freshness requirements for the image. This Google Cloud CDN behavior should not be generalized to other CDNs.
AWS-specific signing details
CloudFront signed URLs use either a canned or custom policy. A custom policy can include an optional not-before time and an IP address or range restriction as well as an expiry. CloudFront documents RSA 2048 and ECDSA 256 signatures. These are CloudFront implementation details, not general requirements for every signed-URL provider. See CloudFront custom policy and the CloudFront signed URL rules.
S3 presigned URLs are reusable until their effective expiry and inherit the permissions of the credentials used to create them. Keep those permissions appropriately limited. The seven-day configured maximum for the AWS CLI or SDK is a provider limit, not a recommended lifetime. AWS also documents checksum options for SigV4 presigned uploads; those concern upload integrity and are not a general requirement for serving signed images.

Common failures and how to diagnose them
- HTTP 403 after adding an image option: A query parameter may have been appended after the URL was signed. Generate the signature for the final request, including the required parameters; do not modify signed query fields afterward. AWS documents this failure mode for CloudFront.
- A URL expires sooner than its configured duration: For an S3 presigned URL, check whether the signing credentials were temporary and whether they expired, were revoked, deleted, or deactivated. The effective lifetime cannot exceed the credential’s validity.
- The protected image still opens through a direct storage URL: The origin may allow bypassing the CDN. Restrict origin access and test the direct-origin path independently.
- A retry fails although the first image transfer started in time: Expiry is checked when a request starts. A transfer already underway may finish, while a new retry after expiry can be rejected. Set a window that supports expected client behavior or issue a fresh authorized URL when appropriate.
- The image appears cached contrary to origin Cache-Control: On Google Cloud CDN, signed requests are cached regardless of the backend Cache-Control header. Review the CDN’s documented signed-request cache behavior and configuration instead of relying on origin headers alone.
- A URL fails after a harmless-looking edit: Compare the requested URL with the generated one, including its query string and encoding. Recreate the URL through the provider’s signing process rather than manually repairing a signature.
- Changing providers breaks signing: Canonical request construction, policy syntax, encoding, and cache behavior are provider-specific. Use that provider’s current official documentation and signing library; do not transfer AWS signing assumptions to Google Cloud or another CDN.
Inspecting a page without changing its access model
Signed image URLs control access to an image; they are not a general-purpose way to authorize a browser screenshot service. If you need to inspect a page containing a protected image, make sure the capture environment is authorized and receives access through the same supported mechanism as your intended viewer. Do not expose signing keys or broaden origin permissions merely to make a capture work.
For unrelated work—capturing a page that is already accessible to the authorized capture request—ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It does not replace private-image authorization or signed-URL generation.
Or skip the browser setup
For an authorized page capture, one GET request returns an image or PDF; this example requests WebP. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters.

FAQ
Can a signed image URL be shared?
Yes. Treat it as a bearer credential: someone who obtains it may use it until it expires or the applicable signing key or credentials are invalidated. Google Cloud Storage explicitly describes access for anyone who knows the URL.
Does signing a URL make a public image private?
No. If the object remains reachable through an unsigned direct-origin address, that route can bypass the signed delivery path. Restrict the origin as well as signing access through the CDN.
Should I put a signed URL in a page that may be cached?
Only after checking where the page and image URL may be stored or shared and how the selected CDN handles signed requests. On Google Cloud CDN, signed requests are cached regardless of backend Cache-Control; origin headers alone do not establish the signed-request caching behavior.
