You can keep Selenium tests in an existing Nose suite, but Nose is a legacy choice: for a new suite, Selenium’s current examples use unittest and pytest. The practical choice depends on your existing test conventions, plugins, and pinned versions.
Install Selenium and prepare a browser
Selenium’s official Python API documentation describes the selenium package as the tool used to automate web browser interaction from Python. The documentation accessed October 3, 2026 lists Python 3.10+ for its documented release and names Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, WebKitGTK, and WPEWebKit among supported browsers. Check the compatibility information for the Selenium version and browser you actually plan to use; these requirements can change.
- Create and activate a virtual environment using your usual Python workflow.
- Install Selenium with
python -m pip install selenium. - Install Nose in an existing project if it is not already present:
python -m pip install nose. Nose’s usage documentation describes thenosetestscommand. - Confirm that the target browser is installed and available on the machine where the test will run.
The Selenium downloads page listed Python client 4.49.0 as stable, released September 9, 2026. That is a dated release detail, not a recommendation to pin every project to that version; select a version compatible with your Python and browser environment.
Driver setup in modern Selenium
Modern Selenium versions use Selenium Manager when a WebDriver is instantiated to handle browser-driver setup. This means older setup guides that require manually downloading every driver and adding it to PATH may not apply. Browser and platform availability still matter, and an environment with restricted downloads or unusual browser installations may need additional configuration.

A local test that opens a browser does not require Selenium Server. Remote WebDriver execution, by contrast, requires a Selenium Grid or another compatible remote WebDriver endpoint.
Write a Selenium test that Nose can discover
Nose’s 1.3.7 usage documentation describes tests written as Python test code and run with nosetests. A straightforward integration is a unittest.TestCase: Nose can discover the test, while Selenium performs the browser actions. Register driver.quit immediately after creating the browser so the session is closed even if navigation or an assertion fails.
import unittest
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
class ExamplePageTest(unittest.TestCase):
def setUp(self):
self.driver = webdriver.Chrome()
self.addCleanup(self.driver.quit)
def test_page_title(self):
self.driver.get("https://example.com")
self.assertIn("Example Domain", self.driver.title)
def test_heading_is_present(self):
self.driver.get("https://example.com")
heading = self.driver.find_element(By.TAG_NAME, "h1")
self.assertEqual(heading.text, "Example Domain")
if __name__ == "__main__":
unittest.main()
Save the file with a test-oriented name such as test_example_page.py. From the project directory, run nosetests; to run just this file, use nosetests test_example_page.py. The assertion checks a specific page result, rather than merely confirming that a browser opened.

Why the cleanup matters
Closing a WebDriver session releases its browser process and associated resources. In the example, addCleanup makes cleanup part of the test lifecycle rather than relying on the test reaching its final line. If your code creates a driver in another lifecycle hook or helper, ensure its corresponding teardown runs on both success and failure.
Run a Nose suite and account for legacy compatibility
Nose documentation also shows running it programmatically with nose.main() or nose.run(), but most test projects use the command-line runner. The fact that an older Nose usage guide documents these entry points does not establish that Nose is actively maintained or recommended for new projects.
Some projects use pytest’s Nose-compatibility support to run older Nose-style tests. The pytest 8.0 documentation describes that support as basic, marks it deprecated, and warns it is likely to be removed in pytest 8.x. It lists certain Nose idioms, including setup/teardown hooks and SkipTest, but notes that plain classes do not receive the unittest.TestCase-style setUp, tearDown, setUpClass, and tearDownClass handling. These are version-specific statements: verify the exact pytest version and test patterns in your repository instead of assuming compatibility.

Keep Nose or move to another runner?
| Choice | When it fits | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Keep Nose for now | An existing suite depends on Nose conventions, plugins, or command-line behavior. | Run it in its pinned environment and inventory its hooks, plugins, options, and test discovery patterns. |
| Use Selenium with unittest | You want to follow Selenium’s documented Python example using the standard library test framework. | Use explicit cleanup for each browser session and preserve the project’s supported Python and Selenium versions. |
| Use Selenium with pytest | You want to follow Selenium’s documented pytest pattern and the project is already compatible with pytest. | Use fixtures to create and close drivers; separately assess any Nose-specific compatibility needs and exact pytest version. |
No runner is universally best on the available evidence. The decision turns on whether the repository already uses a runner, whether its lifecycle conventions and plugins are supported, which Python/Selenium/pytest versions are pinned, and whether the browser runs locally or through Selenium Grid.
Use a current Selenium runner pattern for a new suite
Selenium’s current Python API documentation includes examples for both unittest and pytest. If you are starting without a Nose constraint, follow one of those documented approaches rather than building new dependencies around legacy Nose conventions.

import pytest
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
@pytest.fixture
def driver():
browser = webdriver.Chrome()
yield browser
browser.quit()
def test_page_title(driver):
driver.get("https://example.com")
assert "Example Domain" in driver.title
def test_heading(driver):
driver.get("https://example.com")
assert driver.find_element(By.TAG_NAME, "h1").text == "Example Domain"
For stronger cleanup guarantees if fixture setup grows more complex, use a fixture structure that places driver shutdown in a try/finally or a finalizer. The essential lifecycle rule is unchanged: every created session needs a corresponding quit operation.
unittest alternative
The Nose example above is already a unittest.TestCase and uses Selenium’s documented cleanup pattern. It can run directly with Python’s test runner as well as through Nose, which can make it a practical bridge when changing how a suite is executed. Preserve the existing test assertions and confirm test discovery under the runner you select.
Common problems and fixes
- The browser does not start: confirm the browser is installed, supported by the Selenium version, and available to the account running the test. Modern Selenium invokes Selenium Manager, but that does not make an unavailable browser or incompatible platform usable.
- Driver setup fails in a restricted environment: Selenium Manager may need to obtain driver components. Check the environment’s network and browser installation constraints and the Selenium installation guidance for the chosen platform; do not assume an old manual-driver recipe is necessary in every modern setup.
- Nose reports no tests: check the file and test naming conventions, that test methods are discoverable, and that you are invoking
nosetestsfrom the intended project directory or with the target file path. - Tests pass individually but leak browser processes: add teardown or cleanup that calls
quit()for each created driver, including when setup or assertions fail. - pytest does not run an old Nose test as expected: identify the test’s hooks, class type, plugins, and pytest version. Pytest 8.0 documents limited, deprecated Nose compatibility and does not treat the listed unittest-style hooks on plain classes as it does on
unittest.TestCase. - A local test cannot connect to a remote browser: local WebDriver and remote WebDriver are different setups. Remote execution needs a reachable Selenium Grid endpoint and appropriate remote configuration.
Or skip the browser setup:
If the task is to capture a page image or PDF rather than interactively test browser behavior, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. Its API accepts a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Browser tests are sensitive to the browser, operating system, page behavior, and network conditions, so this workflow has no universal execution speed or reliability figure. Keep assertions focused on observable outcomes, close sessions reliably, and use Selenium Grid when the execution environment calls for remote browsers. The cited material provides no benchmark that would justify claiming one runner is faster than another.
For a test suite, the main operational costs are the browser and execution environment you provision, plus the maintenance effort of its dependencies and test conventions. Pin and review Python, Selenium, browser, runner, plugin, and Grid versions together where applicable; changing one can affect compatibility. Selenium’s browser automation itself is not the test runner—the runner discovers tests and organizes their execution.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run Selenium tests with Nose without pytest?
Yes. Nose can run discovered Python tests that use Selenium directly; pytest is only relevant if you choose it as a runner or use its Nose-compatibility layer.
Does Selenium need Selenium Server for a local browser test?
No. Selenium Server is not required for local WebDriver use; remote WebDriver execution requires Selenium Grid.
