To enter text with Selenium, locate the input element and call its element-level typing method: Java uses sendKeys("text"), while Python uses send_keys("text"). The element must be keyboard-interactable, such as a text input or a contenteditable element.
Enter text into a field
Find the target element first, then send the string to that element. The locator below uses the field’s name attribute; replace my-text with a locator that matches the page you are automating.

Complete form-entry flow
A typical form workflow opens the page, locates a field, enters text, submits the form, and checks the response. The following Java example shows the field-entry and submit steps; adapt the URL and locators to your page.

Choose element sendKeys or the Actions API

For ordinary form entry, prefer the element method. Use the Actions API when the workflow requires a coordinated sequence of actions. See Selenium’s keyboard actions documentation.

What can receive text
The target must be keyboard-interactable. Common targets include text inputs and elements marked contenteditable. Sending keys to a non-editable target may produce an invalid element state error. Selenium’s element interactions also scroll an off-screen target into view and check that it is interactable before acting.
- Use a locator that resolves to the actual editable element, not merely its surrounding label or container.
- For a custom editor, confirm that the editable surface is the element exposed as keyboard-interactable.
- If Selenium reports an invalid element state, check whether the target is editable and ready to receive keyboard input.
Special cases: key sequences and file inputs
The JavaScript WebElement API accepts a sequence of key arguments that Selenium joins into one sequence. Modifier keys such as Control, Shift, Alt, and Meta can remain active until toggled, released with Key.NULL, or the sequence ends. This behavior is useful for keyboard combinations, but ensure a modifier is released when you need subsequent input to be unmodified. See the JavaScript WebElement API reference.

For a file input, sending a path is the documented way to provide a file. With a remote Selenium server, the path must be accessible on the browser machine; a file detector can transfer a local file to that machine. A path on the test-running computer is not automatically a path the remote browser can use.
Troubleshooting text entry
- Invalid element state: The located target may not be editable or keyboard-interactable. Locate the input or content-editable surface itself.
- Text goes to the wrong place: Check that the locator uniquely identifies the intended field and that it does not point to a wrapper element.
- Element is off-screen: Selenium’s element interaction code scrolls off-screen targets into view, but the element still needs to be interactable when the action occurs.
- Remote file path is not found: A file input on a remote browser needs a path on that browser machine, or a configured file detector to transfer a local file.
- Modifier affects later keys: In JavaScript key sequences, release or toggle the modifier, use
Key.NULL, or end the sequence as appropriate.
