In an existing SpecFlow project, inject ScenarioContext into a binding class or scenario-level hook, then use that instance to pass values between steps in the same scenario. Avoid ScenarioContext.Current in SpecFlow 3 and later; dependency injection is the recommended pattern, particularly when scenarios may run in parallel.
What ScenarioContext is for
ScenarioContext represents the currently executing scenario. It can hold temporary scenario data that one step writes and another step reads—for example, a customer name or selected category. Scenario information, including the title and tags, is also available through ScenarioContext.ScenarioInfo.
Use it as test-execution state, not as durable application storage. For a small amount of data shared between steps in the same scenario, it can be convenient. For longer workflows, prefer focused scenarios and explicit setup so that step definitions do not become dependent on a growing collection of hidden keys.
Inject ScenarioContext into a binding
Store the injected context in the binding class and use it in the steps that need to share scenario data. This illustrative C# pattern writes a value in one step and reads it in another:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
using TechTalk.SpecFlow;
[Binding]
public class AccountSteps
{
private readonly ScenarioContext _scenarioContext;
public AccountSteps(ScenarioContext scenarioContext)
{
_scenarioContext = scenarioContext;
}
[Given("I have a customer")]
public void GivenIHaveACustomer()
{
_scenarioContext["customer"] = "Ada";
}
[Then("the customer is available")]
public void ThenTheCustomerIsAvailable()
{
var customer = (string)_scenarioContext["customer"];
// Use customer in an assertion or subsequent test action.
}
}
The key must match between the write and read. Choose descriptive keys and ensure the value is written before a step tries to read it. The example illustrates the pattern; it is not a tested project or a guarantee of compatibility with every SpecFlow version or test-runner configuration.
Choose the context by the data’s lifetime
| Need | Context or approach | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Share temporary data among steps in one active scenario | ScenarioContext |
Its lifetime is the current scenario. |
| Share data across scenarios within a feature | FeatureContext |
It is the distinct feature-scoped context described for that wider lifetime. |
| Share data across a whole test run | Use an appropriate test-run mechanism, not ScenarioContext |
Test-run hooks do not have an active scenario context. |
Do not substitute static fields for scenario-scoped state without considering parallel execution: shared mutable state can make concurrently running scenarios interfere with one another. Keep scenario-specific values in the injected scenario context, and use feature-wide state only when the intended lifetime really spans scenarios.

Use ScenarioContext in hooks only when a scenario is active
Scenario-level and step-level hooks execute within an active scenario and can receive its context. Test-run and feature hooks execute outside an active scenario, so they cannot use that scenario’s ScenarioContext. If setup needs scenario information, put it in an appropriate scenario-level hook or step rather than trying to obtain it from a feature or test-run hook.
Why to avoid ScenarioContext.Current
ScenarioContext.Current was marked obsolete in SpecFlow 3.0 and later. Use constructor injection instead of relying on legacy static access. Injection makes the scenario-scoped dependency explicit and is a better fit for parallel execution than shared static state.

SpecFlow status and Reqnroll
A tutorial updated September 30, 2026 reports that Tricentis ended SpecFlow on December 31, 2024, and recommends considering Reqnroll for new work. It describes Reqnroll as retaining the ScenarioContext and FeatureContext APIs, with the namespace changing from TechTalk.SpecFlow to Reqnroll. Treat this as a migration lead: check current Reqnroll migration documentation and package compatibility before changing a project. An existing SpecFlow project should not be assumed to work automatically on current .NET versions.
Common problems and fixes
- A read fails because the key is missing: check that an earlier step wrote the same key in this scenario and that the write runs before the read.
- A scenario value is unavailable in another scenario: that is outside
ScenarioContext’s lifetime. Decide whether feature-scoped state is appropriate, or make each scenario establish its own required data. - A feature or test-run hook cannot access ScenarioContext: it runs without an active scenario. Move scenario-dependent work to a scenario-level or step-level hook.
- Parallel scenarios produce inconsistent values: remove shared mutable static state for scenario data and use the injected scenario context instead.
- A migration fails after changing namespaces: verify the Reqnroll package versions, migration guidance, and other project dependencies; a namespace change alone does not establish compatibility.

If your scenario work involves capturing a page from a remote URL, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. Its cleanup accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; these steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses report page verdict and billing headers. It also offers an MCP server for AI agents, with tools including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
For example, save a page screenshot as WebP with cURL:
