To stream videos stored in Amazon S3 as a YouTube Live playlist, you need a playback and encoding process on Amazon EC2—or a suitable AWS live-media service—to read and sequence the files, encode a live feed, and send it to YouTube. S3 stores the video objects; an S3 URL by itself does not create a live broadcast. This guide explains the two main architectures, the YouTube setup, and the checks to run before relying on a playlist.

Choose how to turn S3 files into a live feed

There are two distinct approaches. With an EC2-hosted playlist, a process running on your instance reads and sequences the source files, then encodes and transmits the stream to YouTube. With an AWS managed-media approach, you configure services such as MediaLive for supported S3 inputs and the output you need. Neither approach removes the need to confirm that the selected components can produce the YouTube destination and playback behavior you want.

Approach What it does What to verify
EC2-hosted playback and encoding A process on EC2 reads or stages S3 videos, sequences or loops them, encodes a live feed, and sends it to YouTube. The chosen tool’s S3 access method, playlist and loop behavior, restart behavior, encoder settings, and YouTube ingest configuration.
AWS managed-media pipeline AWS documents MediaLive inputs that can pull MP4 or HLS from S3. A separate AWS reference live-streaming architecture uses MediaLive, S3 for encoded segments, and CloudFront for viewer delivery. Whether the current MediaLive input and output configuration matches the intended playlist behavior and YouTube destination. The reference architecture is not, by itself, a turnkey S3-files-to-YouTube playlist.

Option A: Run the playlist and encoder on EC2

  1. Keep source videos in S3. Store the original clips in a private bucket unless they genuinely need to be public. Give the EC2 process access through an appropriately scoped AWS identity. The exact identity and permissions depend on how your selected software reads the objects; confirm them against current AWS security guidance rather than copying a broad, unverified policy.
  2. Select playback and encoding software. It must be able to read the objects, put them in the intended sequence, and keep producing a continuous live feed. It may read S3 objects through an authenticated AWS client or work from files staged on the instance. Confirm whether it supports looping, transitions, and recovery after a process or instance restart.
  3. Configure YouTube Live. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key. Enter those into the encoder’s destination settings. The key acts like a password for accepting the feed: restrict who can see it, and reset it in Live Control Room if it is exposed.
  4. Set the output format. Choose a codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate supported by your encoder and network. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings table for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no single bitrate recommendation that fits every format. YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. RTMP or RTMPS is the recommended ingest protocol for the relevant mode.
  5. Preview and test before going public. Start the encoder and check the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Test the complete playlist, including the transition between files and the point where it should loop or end. Check audio and video quality and confirm the playlist continues as expected before scheduling or publishing the event.
  6. Plan how it will keep running. Decide how the playback process will start after a reboot, what should happen if a clip is unavailable, and how you will detect a stalled encoder or lost connection. These details depend on your software and instance setup; test them instead of assuming an ordinary playlist automatically recovers.

Why there is no universal copy-and-paste playlist command

The AWS and YouTube documentation cited for this workflow describes the relevant inputs and YouTube encoder setup, but does not establish a tested EC2 playlist command or a universal playlist format. Syntax, authenticated S3 access, looping, crossfades, and restart behavior all depend on the software you choose. Select the tool first, validate its S3 support and playlist format, then test the entire chain with the actual files and YouTube stream before publishing it as a dependable broadcast.

Option B: Use an AWS managed-media service

AWS documents Amazon S3 MP4 and HLS as MediaLive input options. Configure the input and output for your actual use case, then verify that the resulting output can be delivered to YouTube and that it supports your required sequencing or looping. A separate AWS reference solution for live streaming uses MediaLive to ingest and transcode a feed, S3 to hold encoded segments, and CloudFront to deliver to viewers. That is a different architecture from directly taking a playlist of S3 files to YouTube.

  • Confirm the supported S3 input type and current MediaLive configuration for the files you have.
  • Confirm the output destination and protocol; do not assume a viewer-delivery architecture automatically sends a feed to YouTube.
  • Test playlist order, loop behavior, audio, and failure recovery with the configured services before relying on the stream.

Configure and protect the YouTube stream

YouTube’s encoder setup uses a stream URL and stream key. Enter both in the selected encoder or compatible output configuration, and keep the key private. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration with the replacement.

Use YouTube’s current encoder settings table to choose bitrate for your specific codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than relying on a generic number. The recommendations include H.264 as an available video codec, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMP/RTMPS for the relevant ingest mode. Settings and service capabilities can change, so check the current YouTube and AWS documentation when implementing the stream.

Preflight, archive, and rights checks

Before the event

  • Verify the encoder can reach the selected S3 objects without making a private bucket public.
  • Check the complete playlist in the YouTube preview, including audio, order, transitions, and loop or end behavior.
  • Test the connection and monitor audio and video quality while the stream is running.
  • Confirm that any local recording you intend to keep is being written and growing.
  • Check that you have the rights needed to use each clip and soundtrack, and review YouTube’s current live-streaming and copyright requirements. Do not assume that storing a video in S3 establishes permission to broadcast it.

Keep your own archive

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a complete recording, keep a local recording or another backup; do not treat YouTube’s archive as a substitute for the original video objects retained in S3.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
The encoder cannot read an S3 file. Object location, access method, or AWS identity permissions. Verify the object reference and that the EC2 process has the intended scoped access. Do not solve a permissions problem by making the bucket public.
YouTube does not receive a signal. Stream URL, stream key, encoder destination, or ingest connection. Recheck the URL and key in the encoder against Live Control Room, then inspect its connection status. If the key may have leaked, reset it and update the encoder.
The stream connects but video or audio is poor. Codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, or available upload capacity. Compare the configured output with YouTube’s current settings table for the chosen format, use constant bitrate, and test again while monitoring quality.
The playlist stops at a file boundary or does not repeat. Playlist syntax or the selected software’s loop and error handling. Test transitions and end-of-list behavior using the actual playlist. Verify the selected tool’s documented loop settings; there is no universal setting for all EC2 playback tools.
The stream stops after an instance or process interruption. Startup, restart, and recovery behavior in your EC2 and playback setup. Test the restart path deliberately and confirm the process resumes with the correct playlist and YouTube destination. Configure monitoring appropriate to your chosen setup.
A long stream has no complete YouTube archive. Stream duration and YouTube archive behavior. For streams exceeding 12 hours, YouTube warns that capture may not occur. Keep a separate recording if the archive matters.
