Windows XP SP3 can launch RemoteApp applications as a client if it has a compatible Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) client. Microsoft identified RDC 7.0 for XP SP3, but the RemoteApp application is published on a Remote Desktop Services (RDS) host—not normally on the XP computer itself. A separate, historical Microsoft guide covers XP SP3 as a guest virtual machine in a RemoteApp for Hyper-V deployment.
First, choose the role XP will play

Microsoft’s [RDC 7.0 announcement](https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/blog/microsoft-security-blog/remote-desktop-connection-7-for-windows-7-windows-xp–windows-vista/246906) identifies the client update for Windows XP SP3. Its [historical architecture reference](https://download.microsoft.com/download/5/b/4/5b46a838-67bb-4f7c-92cb-eabca285dfdd/693821ebook.pdf) describes the server-side requirement as Windows Server 2008 or later and the client-side requirement as RDC 6.0 or later. These are historical requirements, not a claim that XP or those server versions remain supported today.
Use XP SP3 as a RemoteApp client
In this arrangement, an administrator publishes the application on the RDS deployment and provides the user with its connection details or an .rdp file. Microsoft’s [Set-RDRemoteApp documentation](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/remotedesktop/set-rdremoteapp?view=windowsserver2025-ps) describes RemoteApp programs as part of an RDS deployment: the remote program appears in its own resizable window and has a taskbar entry.
- Check the XP client version. Confirm that the computer is running Windows XP SP3.
- Check for a compatible RDC client. Microsoft identified RDC 7.0 for XP SP3. The sources establish that historical update requirement, but do not establish whether the old package is currently available for download. Do not assume a download found elsewhere is authentic or suitable.
- Ask the RDS administrator for the published-app connection. The application must be configured on the RDS host. Obtain the supplied .rdp file or other connection details; installing an RDC update alone does not publish an application.
- Open the supplied connection. Use the provided .rdp file or launch method. If the connection fails, ask the administrator to confirm the app is published and that the host and connection are configured for RemoteApp.
The current [Microsoft RDP properties reference](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-desktop/rdp-properties) explains general .rdp properties, but it does not establish current XP support. Do not treat it as an XP-specific setup guide.

If XP SP3 is a Hyper-V guest
Microsoft’s legacy [RemoteApp for Hyper-V (VDI) deployment guide](https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/blog/microsoft-security-blog/remoteapp-for-hyper-v-vdi-deployment/246979/) describes a special arrangement that launches applications from a Windows XP SP3 guest. It is distinct from using an ordinary XP workstation as a client, and should not be read as a contemporary deployment recommendation.
Check the .rdp file for the documented launch errors
- If the launch stays stuck in the Remote Desktop details pane, check whether the .rdp file includes
alternate shell:s:rdpinit.exe. - If the client reports that the remote computer does not support RemoteApp, check whether the .rdp file includes
DisableRemoteAppCapsCheck:i:1. - If launch hangs because the XP/Vista update package was not installed correctly, Microsoft’s guide recommends uninstalling the package, restarting, and reinstalling it according to its setup instructions. The available guidance here does not establish the package name or a complete installation sequence, so do not substitute guessed registry edits or package details.
Microsoft’s general [RDP properties reference](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-desktop/rdp-properties) describes alternate shell as specifying a program to start automatically in a remote session instead of Explorer. For the XP guest-specific troubleshooting above, use the historical Hyper-V guide rather than assuming current RDP documentation guarantees XP compatibility.

Can an XP SP3 computer publish RemoteApp?
Not as the standard setup described by Microsoft. RemoteApp publishing is configured on an RDS deployment, while XP SP3 is identified as a client in the historical RDC guidance. The Hyper-V guest instructions are a special virtual-desktop scenario, not evidence that an ordinary XP workstation can act as a general RemoteApp publishing server.
