To use Microsoft Remote Desktop from outside your home or office network, the computer you want to control must run a Windows edition that can host incoming connections, have Remote Desktop enabled, and stay powered on and awake. You also need an approved route into its network—usually your organization’s VPN or, for a personally managed PC, router port forwarding—and an account authorized to sign in.
Choose the right remote-access method
“Remote Desktop” can refer to different setups. Choose based on the computer you need to reach and who manages it.
| Method | When it fits | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Remote Desktop to a Windows PC | You control the host PC, or your organization provides the connection route. | The host must run Windows Pro, Enterprise, Education, or a supported Windows Server edition. Windows Home can connect to another PC but cannot host incoming Microsoft Remote Desktop connections. Microsoft documents VPN or router port forwarding for connecting from outside the host’s local network. Microsoft: Allow access to your PC |
| Organization-provided Remote Desktop web access | Your administrator has set up a Remote Desktop deployment and supplied its web address and sign-in details. | This is an administrator-configured service, not the same as turning on Remote Desktop on a personal PC. Microsoft’s web client supports desktop operating systems, not mobile devices. Microsoft: Remote Desktop web client |
| Chrome Remote Desktop | You need Google’s separate remote-access option rather than Microsoft’s built-in RDP host. | Google says an internet connection is required at both ends. Its firewall troubleshooting guidance names outbound UDP, inbound UDP responses, TCP 443, and TCP/UDP 3478 as traffic that may need to be allowed. Set up a Windows PC as the Remote Desktop host
1. Check the Windows edition
On the computer you want to control, open Settings > System > About and check the Windows edition. Windows Home cannot accept incoming connections through Microsoft Remote Desktop. If this is a work or school computer, check with its administrator before changing settings.
2. Enable Remote Desktop and allow the right accounts
- On the host PC, open Settings > System > Remote Desktop.
- Turn on Remote Desktop and confirm the prompt.
- Note the PC name shown in the Remote Desktop settings; you may need it in the client.
- Check who is allowed to connect. Administrators have access by default; add other intended users through the Remote Desktop users setting if needed.
Use strong, unique passwords for accounts allowed to connect. Microsoft’s setup guidance is at How to use Remote Desktop.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Keep the host reachable
The PC must be powered on, connected to its network, and awake. A sleeping or hibernating PC will not accept a connection, so review its power and sleep settings if it routinely becomes unavailable. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends confirming the host can accept remote connections. Microsoft: Remote Desktop troubleshooting
Connect from outside the local network
Enabling Remote Desktop on the PC does not, by itself, make it reachable over the internet. The client needs a network route to the host. For a work device, use the route your administrator approves; for a personally managed PC, Microsoft documents VPN or router port forwarding as options.

Use an organization’s VPN
If your employer or school provides a VPN, connect to it before opening the Remote Desktop client, then connect using the host name or address and credentials your administrator specifies. Organizations may also require a Remote Desktop Gateway or other managed access service, or may block external connections altogether. Do not configure a work PC or bypass its access policy without authorization.
Use router port forwarding for a personally managed PC
Port forwarding maps traffic arriving at the router’s public side to a device on the home network. Microsoft identifies 3389 as the default Remote Desktop port; the exact router menus and configuration vary by model. Microsoft’s port-forwarding overview is at Allow access to your PC.

Forwarding a port exposes a route to the host; it is not a security control by itself. Microsoft advises enabling Remote Desktop only on trusted networks, using strong unique passwords, and avoiding devices that require strict access controls. A changed port number does not replace sound access controls. If you are unsure how to secure the network, use a suitable VPN or consult a qualified administrator rather than exposing the PC directly.

- Make sure the remote device has the appropriate Microsoft client. Microsoft lists Windows, macOS and iOS through Windows App, and Android client routes in its Remote Desktop setup guide.
- Connect to the required VPN first if your setup uses one.
- Open the client, add or enter the host PC name or address, and start the connection.
- Sign in with an account that has permission to use Remote Desktop on the host.
Once connected, Remote Desktop is intended to let you use the host’s apps, files, and network resources as though you were sitting at that computer, subject to the account’s permissions and the organization’s policies. Microsoft documentation

Fix common connection problems
- The host is unavailable: Check that it is powered on, awake, online, and configured to accept remote connections.
- The PC name does not work: Verify the name in the host’s Remote Desktop settings. Microsoft suggests trying the host’s IP address if the name does not resolve.
- The host uses Windows Home: Home cannot host incoming Microsoft Remote Desktop connections. Use a supported host edition or an alternative remote-access method appropriate to your needs.
- The connection times out or is blocked: Check the host firewall and network route, including any VPN, router forwarding, or organization gateway. For Microsoft RDP, 3389 is the default port identified in Microsoft’s guidance; do not assume a port change alone will make exposure safe.
- Sign-in is rejected: Confirm the account is authorized—typically through the Remote Desktop Users group or an authorized administrative group—and that the credentials are correct.
- It is a work or school device: Ask the administrator whether VPN, Gateway, Web Access, or another approved method is required. Policies may prevent outside access.
- Chrome Remote Desktop cannot connect: Confirm internet access at both ends. If a firewall or antivirus is blocking it, Google’s troubleshooting page lists outbound UDP, inbound UDP responses, TCP 443, and TCP/UDP 3478 as traffic that may need to be allowed. Work and school network restrictions must be addressed by the administrator.
