Use a tuple annotation to describe whether a tuple has a fixed number of elements, whether each position has its own type, or whether it can contain any number of values of one type. For example, tuple[int, str] describes a two-item tuple with an integer followed by a string; tuple[int, ...] describes a tuple of any length containing integers. These annotations help static type checkers catch mismatches, but Python does not validate values against them at runtime.
Choose the tuple annotation that matches the shape
In modern Python, write tuple types with the built-in tuple[...] form. The types inside the brackets describe either specific positions or a repeated element type, depending on the notation.

The key distinction is between comma-separated types and an ellipsis. Multiple types describe positions and a fixed length; the ellipsis after a type means that type can repeat for any number of positions. The Python 3.13 typing documentation describes tuple[T, ...] as an any-length tuple whose elements all have type T.
Annotate fixed records and variable-length collections
Use one type per position for fixed-shape data
For coordinates, a record-like return value, or another tuple whose length and position meanings are known, list each position’s type:

A type checker can use these annotations to flag a value with the wrong length or a value of the wrong type in a given position. Do not write tuple[int] when you mean “any number of integers”: it denotes a one-item tuple. Use tuple[int, ...] for that variable-length case.

Use an ellipsis when every item shares a type
For a variable-length sequence of values all of the same type, put that type before the ellipsis:
scores: tuple[int, ...] = (8, 13, 21)
This describes zero or more integers, not a tuple with a required minimum length. Use it when the tuple’s length can vary but its element type does not.

Mark an empty tuple explicitly when useful
nothing: tuple[()] = () expresses that the tuple is empty. This is different from tuple[int, ...], which allows integer items, including an empty tuple.
Match the syntax to the supported Python version
The built-in tuple became subscriptable for annotations in Python 3.9. If your project supports Python 3.9 or newer, the usual spelling is tuple[int, str]. For older interpreters, existing code may use typing.Tuple instead:

Choose syntax against the project’s minimum supported interpreter, not only the Python version installed on your own machine. Python’s 3.10 typing documentation covers the built-in and legacy forms.

Ordinary coordinates, records, and homogeneous tuples do not need variadic generics. They are useful when a generic API must accept and preserve a variable number of positional types. Python’s newer TypeVarTuple syntax can express that shape:

Here, Ts represents a sequence of types, so the input and return tuple retain the same sequence of element types. Older notation uses Unpack[Ts]. Check the supported Python version and type checker before adopting this newer syntax; the Python 3.13 and 3.14 typing documentation and typing documentation describe these features.
Know what annotations do—and do not—guarantee
Tuple type hints document the intended contract and let static type checkers identify some mismatches before execution. They do not make Python enforce that contract when the program runs. The Python 3.10 typing documentation states: “The Python runtime does not enforce function and variable type annotations.” An annotation also does not prove that an implementation always returns the stated type.
If tuple values arrive from JSON, files, network requests, or another untyped source, validate them at that boundary before relying on the annotation. Treat runtime validation as a separate requirement from choosing the annotation syntax.
