Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallUse the mouse action to trigger the behavior, then wait for the page state that proves the behavior completed. page.waitForFunction() does not wait for a mouse event by itself. It repeatedly evaluates a function in the page until that function returns a truthy value. For ordinary buttons, use a locator action such as locator.click(); use page.mouse when the test depends on viewport coordinates or a deliberate move/press/release sequence.
The reliable sequence is to create the wait first, perform the action, and then await the wait promise:
const changed = page.waitForFunction(() =>
document.querySelector('[data-status]')?.getAttribute('data-status') === 'ready'
);
await page.mouse.move(320, 240);
await page.mouse.click(320, 240);
await changed;
This waits for an observable application result rather than guessing how long a handler, request, animation or rendering update will take.
What waitForFunction actually waits for
The Page API defines page.waitForFunction(pageFunction, arg?, options?) as a wait for a page-side function to return a truthy result. The resolved value is a JSHandle for that truthy result. The predicate runs in the browser page context, so it can inspect DOM state, attributes, text, properties or other values available to page JavaScript. See the Playwright Page API.

That makes it a state wait, not an input-event listener. A mouse click may start a fetch, toggle an attribute, insert an element or change a status label. Your predicate should assert the stable result that matters to the test.
Wait for the result, not an arbitrary delay
A fixed waitForTimeout() can be too short on a slow run and unnecessarily long on a fast one. A predicate such as “the status attribute is ready” synchronizes with the application’s actual state. Choose a condition that is specific enough to avoid passing before the intended update.
Start the wait before a fast action
Create the wait promise before moving or clicking when the page could reach the expected state immediately. This sequencing prevents a very fast transition from occurring before your test has begun waiting. It is practical synchronization guidance; it does not turn waitForFunction into a mouse-event API.
Complete JavaScript examples
Coordinate click with page.mouse
Use page.mouse when coordinates are the subject of the test—for example, a canvas, a drawing surface or a drag target whose position matters.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('waits for the result of a coordinate click', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/editor');
const changed = page.waitForFunction(() => {
const status = document.querySelector('[data-status]');
return status?.getAttribute('data-status') === 'ready';
}, undefined, { timeout: 10_000 });
await page.mouse.move(320, 240);
await page.mouse.click(320, 240);
await changed;
await expect(page.locator('[data-status]')).toHaveAttribute('data-status', 'ready');
});
The coordinates are CSS pixels relative to the main-frame viewport. mouse.click(x, y) is a convenience for moving to the point, pressing and releasing. For a controlled gesture, call the individual methods yourself.
Hover, press, move and release
const menuOpened = page.waitForFunction(() =>
document.querySelector('[data-menu]')?.getAttribute('aria-expanded') === 'true'
);
await page.mouse.move(180, 96, { steps: 8 });
await page.mouse.down();
await page.mouse.move(260, 150, { steps: 12 });
await page.mouse.up();
await menuOpened;
The steps option sends interpolated mousemove events between the current position and destination. This is useful when the application reacts to a path rather than only to the final point. The documented mouse methods and coordinate model are described in the Mouse API.

Preferred pattern for a normal button
If a button can be identified by role, name or another locator, let Playwright perform the user-like action and its actionability checks:
const changed = page.waitForFunction(() =>
document.querySelector('[data-status]')?.getAttribute('data-status') === 'ready'
);
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Save' }).click();
await changed;
Locator clicking checks that the target can receive the action. It is generally more robust than hard-coded coordinates when the purpose is simply to activate an element. Locator-oriented interaction guidance is included in the Page API documentation.
Choosing the right waiting technique
| Need | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Click a normal visible element | locator.click(), then a locator assertion or waitForFunction |
Targets the element and performs actionability checks. |
| Exercise exact coordinates or a gesture | page.mouse, then waitForFunction |
Provides viewport CSS-pixel control and separate move, press and release calls. |
| Directly dispatch a DOM event | locator.dispatchEvent('click') or another event |
Tests handler behavior without proving that a visible, actionable pointer could reach the element. |
| Wait for a browser event itself | An event-specific Playwright wait | Use this when the event—not a resulting application state—is the thing under test. |
dispatchEvent('click') is not interchangeable with a mouse click: it can dispatch regardless of visibility and does not exercise pointer hit testing or actionability in the same way. Conversely, page.evaluate() is for running page-context JavaScript and automatically waiting when that function returns a Promise; it is not a repeated truthy-predicate wait. The distinction is covered in the JavaScript evaluation guide.
Writing reliable predicates
Prefer stable, application-owned signals
- Use a dedicated attribute such as
data-status="ready"when you control the application. - For a dialog, check a stable visibility or accessibility state such as
aria-expanded="true". - For asynchronous work, wait for a success marker rather than merely waiting for a spinner to disappear.
- Keep the predicate side-effect free. It should observe state, not click, mutate or start another request on every poll.
Pass arguments instead of embedding changing values
const expected = 'complete';
await page.waitForFunction(
value => document.querySelector('[data-job]')?.textContent?.trim() === value,
expected,
{ timeout: 15_000 }
);
The optional second argument is passed to the page function. This keeps the predicate reusable and avoids unsafe string construction.
Set a finite timeout
The documented default timeout for waitForFunction is 0, meaning no timeout, although page or context configuration can change effective behavior. In a test suite, set a finite value appropriate to the operation so a broken page fails with a useful diagnostic instead of hanging indefinitely.
await page.waitForFunction(
() => document.querySelector('[data-status]')?.dataset.status === 'ready',
undefined,
{ timeout: 10_000, polling: 'raf' }
);
Use a polling mode deliberately. The default polling behavior is suitable for many DOM conditions; animation-sensitive checks can use raf, while a numeric interval can reduce evaluation frequency for slower-changing state. Keep the predicate cheap because it is evaluated repeatedly.

Mouse-event scenarios and patterns
Waiting for a hover effect
const highlighted = page.waitForFunction(() =>
document.querySelector('#card')?.classList.contains('is-highlighted')
);
await page.mouse.move(400, 300, { steps: 5 });
await highlighted;
For an element-targeted hover, await page.locator('#card').hover() is usually clearer. Use coordinates when the hover region itself, rather than the element identity, is what you need to verify.
Waiting after a drag
const moved = page.waitForFunction(() =>
document.querySelector('[data-item="A"]')?.closest('[data-column="done"]') !== null
);
await page.mouse.move(100, 180);
await page.mouse.down();
await page.mouse.move(500, 180, { steps: 20 });
await page.mouse.up();
await moved;
Choose a post-drag DOM signal that represents completed application work. A pointer-up event alone does not prove that the drop was accepted or persisted.
Clicking an element inside an iframe
page.mouse coordinates are relative to the main page viewport. For an element inside a frame, prefer the frame’s locator (for example, page.frameLocator('iframe').getByRole(...)) so Playwright resolves the target in the correct document. If you truly need coordinates, account for the iframe’s position in the main viewport and wait for a state visible in the relevant frame.
Troubleshooting common failures
The wait never resolves
- Predicate is checking the wrong state: inspect the DOM after the action and assert the exact attribute, text or property the application changes.
- Action missed the target: replace coordinates with a locator, or verify the viewport and target position before using
page.mouse. - Cross-origin or frame context: query the frame that owns the element instead of the top-level document.
- Indefinite timeout: provide a finite timeout and capture a trace, screenshot or page HTML when it expires.
The test passes locally but flakes in CI
Start the wait before the action, remove arbitrary sleeps, and wait for a server-confirmed or DOM-confirmed result. Avoid predicates based on transient animation classes or exact timing. If the page has several similar controls, use an accessible locator or a unique test attribute.

A locator may be covered, moving, disabled or outside the usable viewport. That failure is valuable: fix the page state, scroll or target selection rather than replacing the action with dispatchEvent unless bypassing real interaction is explicitly the test objective.
The coordinate click behaves differently at different sizes
Coordinates are viewport CSS pixels, so responsive layout, device scale and scrolling change what a point hits. Set the viewport deliberately, scroll to the intended region, and prefer element locators unless coordinate behavior is the requirement.

Performance, reliability and diagnostics
Keep predicates narrowly scoped: a single selector and attribute read is cheaper and easier to diagnose than scanning the entire document. A finite timeout should reflect the real operation, including expected network and server latency, without masking regressions. For interactions that trigger navigation, wait for the navigation or a destination-specific state in addition to the input action. For network-driven updates, a DOM marker that is written only after the response is processed is usually more meaningful than waiting for “network idle” alone.
When a wait fails, log the last known status, preserve a screenshot and inspect Playwright’s trace. The failure should tell you whether the pointer never reached the target, the handler ran but produced an unexpected state, or the application never completed its asynchronous work.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to obtain a clean image of a page rather than test a mouse interaction, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request website screenshot API. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

What does the returned JSHandle represent?
It represents the truthy value returned by the page function. If you only need synchronization, awaiting the handle is sufficient; if you need the value, read it with the handle’s appropriate Playwright method.
Why does dispatchEvent make a test less realistic?
It invokes the DOM event directly and can work even when the element is hidden or covered. It therefore verifies handler logic, not whether a user-like pointer action could reach the element.
