Start Playwright UI Mode from your project with npx playwright test --ui. It opens an interactive test runner where you can choose tests, filter results, watch tests rerun as you edit, and inspect timeline snapshots, actions, logs, and errors to understand failures.
Start Playwright UI Mode
Run the command from the root of a project configured for Playwright Test:
npx playwright test --uiThe Playwright documentation recommends UI Mode for walking through test steps and seeing what happened before, during, and after each step. See the UI Mode guide for the documented workflow. Because some UI details are documented under /docs/next/, labels can change; check the documentation matching your installed Playwright version if the interface differs.
Choose tests to run
UI Mode displays test files in a sidebar. From there, run the full suite or select an individual file, describe block, or test. Use the available filters to narrow the displayed tests by text, @tag, project, or passed, failed, and skipped status.

If your tests depend on project setup tests, run those setup tests first. UI Mode does not automatically take setup tests into account. The Running tests guide describes running and selecting tests.
Watch tests while editing
Use UI Mode during development when you want an interactive view of test selection and reruns after edits. This is useful for iterating on a test locally; it is distinct from simply opening a visible browser during a command-line run.

Inspect a test run and diagnose failures
After a run, use the timeline and its detail panels to trace what the test did and where it failed.
- Timeline: Navigation and actions appear in sequence. Hover over an action to see a page snapshot from that point.
- Actions: Review the locator used, action duration, and DOM changes. Compare the Before and After states to see how the page changed.
- Logs and network: Filter messages to the selected timeline range to focus on activity around a particular action.
- Errors: Read the test error and use its marker on the timeline to locate the point associated with the failure.
This evidence helps distinguish a bad locator from a page that did not reach the expected state, a slow action, or an issue visible in the surrounding logs or network activity. UI Mode’s trace and inspection details are covered in the official UI Mode guide.

Use Pick locator to improve a selector
- Open the relevant page snapshot and choose Pick locator.
- Select the element in the DOM snapshot. Review the proposed locator in the locator playground and refine it as needed.
- Copy the locator into the test, then check that it expresses the element and behavior your test is meant to verify.
A generated locator is a useful starting point, not proof that the selector captures the test’s intent. Playwright’s running-tests documentation also describes the locator picker and live highlighting: Running tests.

Use --debug when you want the Inspector’s step-through debugging workflow; use --headed when you only need to see the browser during a run. The CLI documents the debugging behavior at Playwright Test CLI and Debugging tests.

For CI, Playwright cautions that recording traces on every test is performance heavy. Its documentation lists on-first-retry and retain-on-failure as alternatives. Configure tracing around failures or retries when that matches your debugging needs, then inspect the resulting trace in Trace Viewer or the HTML report. npx playwright test --ui-host=0.0.0.0 --ui-port=8080Binding to 0.0.0.0 can make UI Mode, its traces, and information such as passwords or secrets accessible from other machines on the network. Use it only in an appropriately trusted and controlled environment; do not treat the bind address as a harmless convenience. Consult the UI Mode guide for the documented remote-access setup and warning.
Troubleshoot common issues
- Setup-dependent tests fail or appear unprepared: Run the project’s setup tests first; UI Mode does not automatically account for them.
- You cannot reach UI Mode from outside a container: The default local access may not be reachable externally. In a controlled environment, use the documented
--ui-host=0.0.0.0binding and, if needed, set--ui-port=8080. Consider the network exposure before doing so. - A copied locator is brittle or tests the wrong thing: Revisit it in the locator playground and verify that it targets the element and behavior intended by the test.
- You expected a visible browser but not the interactive runner: Use
--headedfor visible-browser execution. Use--uifor interactive selection and trace-based exploration. - CI tracing adds overhead: Avoid recording traces on every test unless required. Consider the documented
on-first-retryorretain-on-failuresettings instead.
