To screenshot a webpage with Playwright MCP on a low-cost VPS in India, run the MCP server and headless Chromium on the VPS, install the browser’s Linux dependencies, then connect your MCP client locally or over HTTP and ask it to capture the page. You need Node.js 20 or newer and an MCP client; the official Playwright MCP setup documents both prerequisites. Playwright MCP documentation
The client is the interface for your request; the MCP server connects it to Playwright, which controls the browser. On a remote setup, browser automation runs on the VPS, while the client can remain on your computer. This guide uses Chromium as a practical single-browser starting point, not as a claim about minimum VPS specifications.
What you need before installing
- A Linux VPS in India that you can administer. The instructions below use Playwright’s Linux browser-installation commands; exact compatibility depends on the distribution and current Playwright version.
- Node.js 20 or newer and an MCP-compatible client. The Playwright MCP getting-started guide lists these prerequisites.
- Network access from the machine running the browser to the pages you intend to capture. For remote MCP connections, you also need a safe network path from the client to the VPS.
- Enough disk and memory headroom for your chosen Linux image, browser version, page, and workload. The documentation does not establish a universal minimum RAM or VPS size.

Install Playwright MCP and Chromium on the VPS
1. Check Node.js
Confirm the installed version on the VPS:
node --version
Use Node.js 20 or newer. If the command is missing or reports an older version, install or upgrade Node.js using the instructions for your Linux distribution before proceeding.

2. Install Chromium and its dependencies
Playwright browser binaries are version-specific: a Playwright version expects its corresponding browser build. Use the Playwright CLI to install Chromium and the Linux dependencies it needs:
npx playwright install --with-deps chromium
This command installs Chromium rather than every browser engine. Playwright notes that browser downloads can consume hundreds of megabytes, so account for that when choosing disk capacity; it is not a fixed disk requirement. 3. Use headless mode on a displayless VPS
Playwright MCP defaults to headed mode. A VPS without a graphical display should run the server with --headless. For a client that launches the MCP server as a local process, configure its MCP server entry with the documented command and argument:

A typical configuration shape is below. Put it in the MCP configuration file used by your client; file paths and reload steps vary by client, so use that client’s MCP setup instructions.

Connect the MCP client to the VPS
Option A: The client can launch the server on the same host
If your MCP client runs on the VPS, or can launch a process there, use the local-process configuration above. The client starts the server; no separate HTTP listener is needed.
Option B: The client is on another machine
Run the Playwright MCP server on the VPS using its HTTP transport:
npx @playwright/mcp@latest --headless --port 8931
Then configure the remote MCP client to connect to http://<server-address>:8931/mcp, substituting a reachable address for the VPS. The Playwright documentation also describes binding with --host 0.0.0.0 when broad interface binding is needed. Consult the current transport instructions for exact flags and client configuration.
Do not expose an unauthenticated service broadly just to make the connection work. Restrict reachability using the network controls available in your environment—for example, allow access only from a trusted client network or use a private network path. The documented transport mechanics do not provide a VPS-provider-specific firewall recipe.
Ask the client to capture a webpage
Once the Playwright MCP server is connected and its browser is available, ask the assistant to navigate to the target and take a screenshot. For example:

Keep a small VPS setup conservative
- Start with headless Chromium rather than installing unused browser engines. Playwright recommends installing only the browsers needed to reduce download time and disk use. Browser installation guidance
- Use one browser workload at a time initially, then adjust concurrency only after observing how your actual pages behave. Playwright’s CI guidance recommends one worker when stability and reproducibility matter; that is guidance, not a measured VPS capacity limit. Playwright CI guidance
- Expect resource use to vary with the page, browser version, viewport, image loading, and concurrent captures. The available documentation does not provide a guaranteed screenshot time, a minimum RAM figure, or an India-specific performance benchmark.
- Keep browser binaries aligned with the Playwright version. After upgrading the package or changing versions, rerun the browser installation command if the expected browser binary is unavailable.
Troubleshooting common failures
The MCP client cannot start or find the server
Check that Node.js is installed and is version 20 or newer, and confirm the client’s MCP configuration uses the expected command and argument structure. Client configuration locations differ; restart or reload the client if its setup requires it.
Chromium fails to launch on Linux
The browser binary or system libraries may be missing, or may not match the installed Playwright version. Run npx playwright install --with-deps chromium on the VPS and verify that the distribution is supported by the current Playwright release.
The browser reports that no display is available
Make sure the server arguments include --headless. Headed operation normally requires a visible display, which a minimal VPS installation usually does not provide.

Verify that the server process is running, that the client uses the correct address and port, and that its endpoint ends in /mcp. Also check that network controls permit the client to reach the VPS. Binding to 0.0.0.0 alone does not make a service reachable through a firewall or private network boundary.
The screenshot is missing or saved somewhere unexpected
Check the tool’s returned result and the MCP server’s output directory. If you provide a relative filename, it is resolved against the workspace root; without a filename, the tool uses a timestamped name in the output directory.
A target page is incomplete or differs from what you expect
Confirm the requested URL is reachable from the VPS and allow the page time to load its content. Page behavior, access restrictions, and network conditions can affect what the browser renders; the documented setup does not guarantee identical results for every site.
