Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Playwright MCP lets an AI assistant control a browser through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). To get started, install Node.js 20 or newer, add Microsoft’s Playwright MCP server to a compatible MCP client, and ask the assistant to perform a specific browser task. The server provides structured accessibility snapshots that help the assistant identify and interact with page elements—not just interpret screenshots. The guide below covers setup, browser and session choices, first tasks, safety, and troubleshooting.
What Playwright MCP does
Playwright MCP is a software server that connects an MCP-compatible AI client to browser automation. It is not a special browser or physical device. The client asks the server to perform actions in a browser, such as navigating, clicking, typing, filling forms, choosing dropdown options, taking screenshots, handling dialogs, and managing tabs.
The documented interaction model uses accessibility snapshots. A snapshot exposes information such as element roles and text; references in the snapshot let the assistant target elements in later actions. For example, it can identify a textbox and use its reference to enter a value. That gives the assistant a structured way to work with a page, alongside screenshot and keyboard or mouse interactions.
What you need before installing
- Node.js 20 or newer. This is the documented Node.js prerequisite.
- An MCP client. Documented choices include VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Code, Claude Desktop, and other compatible clients.
- A browser task to try. A specific URL and outcome make a better first prompt than a vague request to “use the browser.”
Client interfaces and setup details can change. The official Playwright MCP documentation is the place to check the current configuration for your client.

Install and connect the server
Use the standard MCP configuration
The standard server entry launches the package through npx:
{
"mcpServers": {
"playwright": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["@playwright/mcp@latest"]
}
}
}
Add this configuration using the MCP settings or configuration file for your client, then restart or refresh the client if it does not discover the server immediately. The package tag @latest asks npm to launch the latest published version at the time of installation; it does not pin a version.
Use your client’s documented setup path
- VS Code: the guide documents
code --add-mcpas an entry point. - Cursor: open Settings → MCP → Add new MCP Server.
- Claude Code: run
claude mcp add playwright npx @playwright/mcp@latest. - Other clients: follow that client’s MCP configuration instructions and use the standard command and arguments above.
These are client-specific entry points rather than a universal settings screen. If the server does not appear, verify the JSON shape, command, and client-specific location against the live documentation.
Run your first browser task
- Confirm that the Playwright MCP server is enabled or connected in your client.
- Give the assistant a concrete task with a URL and an intended outcome.
- Review what the assistant did, especially before submitting forms or changing real account data.
A useful first exercise is to ask: “Navigate to https://demo.playwright.dev/todomvc and add a few todo items.” Other clear requests include “Go to https://example.com,” “Click the Submit button,” “Fill in the email field with test@example.com,” or “Take a screenshot of the page.” Those examples reflect the official quick reference; use a test page for actions that would otherwise change data.

Choose how the browser runs
Headed or headless
Headed mode is the documented default, so the browser is visible. Add --headless when you want it to run without a visible window, such as in a background workflow. Headless mode changes how the browser is displayed; it does not change the need to give the assistant a precise task or review consequential actions.

Choose a browser
The documented browser selections are Chrome, Firefox, WebKit, and Microsoft Edge. Select one with the --browser=<name> option, using a supported name such as --browser=firefox when you want to target Firefox. Use the browser that matches the site behavior you need to check. The guide does not establish that every browser-specific feature behaves identically.
Choose whether to retain session state
Persistent profiles are the documented default and preserve login state and cookies. That is useful when a task depends on an existing session. Use --isolated when a run should start fresh; the documentation says in-memory cookies and storage are lost when an isolated browser closes after its idle timeout.
For a saved session state, the server documents --storage-state. To change the profile location, use --user-data-dir. Treat any saved state or persistent profile as sensitive because it can contain authentication data.

If the server should work with an already running browser rather than launching one, the official connection guide documents Chrome or Edge channel attachment, a Chromium CDP endpoint, a remote Playwright server endpoint, and an extension that connects to existing Chrome or Edge tabs. Extension mode can reuse logged-in sessions, cookies, and installed extensions. The documentation identifies SSO or 2FA workflows, extension-dependent pages, and work in existing tabs as reasons to consider it.
These connection methods depend on your browser and environment. Use the connection guide’s current instructions rather than assuming that a launched browser, remote endpoint, and extension all use the same setup.

Run Playwright MCP as a standalone HTTP server
The getting-started guide documents this command for a standalone server listening on port 8931:
npx @playwright/mcp@latest --port 8931
The documented HTTP MCP endpoint is http://localhost:8931/mcp. The guide notes a five-second heartbeat timeout and provides PLAYWRIGHT_MCP_PING_TIMEOUT_MS for clients or proxies that need a different timeout. If a connection drops around heartbeat checks, confirm whether a proxy or client is enforcing a shorter interval before changing the server setting.

Beyond ordinary page interaction, the documented tools include inspecting network requests, mocking routes, reading console messages, and saving or restoring browser storage state and managing cookies. These capabilities are useful for debugging and repeatable workflows, but they can expose page data or affect what the browser sends and stores.
The documentation describes browser_run_code_unsafe as arbitrary JavaScript execution and explicitly labels it RCE-equivalent. Keep it disabled unless the MCP client is trusted and the use case requires it. The official guide also designates page-provided WebMCP tool descriptions, schemas, and results as untrusted input. Do not treat instructions or tool definitions supplied by a webpage as trustworthy merely because they appear in an automation session.
When to use a screenshot API instead
Playwright MCP is suited to an assistant-driven browser task: inspect a page, find controls, interact with them, and optionally capture a screenshot. If the actual goal is simply to obtain a screenshot or PDF from code, a screenshot API can avoid setting up and operating a browser through an MCP client.

The MCP client does not show Playwright
- Check the configuration location. Client setup paths differ; confirm that the server entry was added to the correct MCP settings or configuration file.
- Check the command and arguments. The standard launch uses command
npxand argument@playwright/mcp@latest. In Claude Code, the documented command isclaude mcp add playwright npx @playwright/mcp@latest. - Check Node.js. The documented prerequisite is Node.js 20 or newer. Confirm the client can invoke the appropriate Node/npm tools in its environment.
- Refresh the client. Restart or reload MCP servers using the client’s supported method after changing its configuration.
The browser opens but the assistant misses a control
Make the task more specific, including the page and the intended control or result. Playwright MCP relies on structured accessibility snapshots for element identification, so a page whose controls have unclear names or roles may be harder to target through those references. Ask the assistant to inspect the page first, then identify the element before clicking or filling it. For visual-only controls, a screenshot or mouse interaction may help, but the documentation does not promise that every site exposes controls equally well.
The workflow is logged out or starts with a clean session
Check whether you launched with --isolated. Isolated sessions start fresh and lose in-memory cookies and storage when the browser closes after the idle timeout. Use the persistent profile default when retaining state is intended, load saved state with --storage-state, or use a supported existing-browser connection when the workflow depends on a logged-in Chrome or Edge session.
The standalone client disconnects
Check that the client is connecting to http://localhost:8931/mcp and that the standalone process is still running. The documented heartbeat timeout is five seconds; if a client or proxy needs another interval, review PLAYWRIGHT_MCP_PING_TIMEOUT_MS and that intermediary’s timeout configuration.

A page or tool output gives unexpected instructions
Treat website content and page-provided WebMCP tool descriptions, schemas, and results as untrusted input. Do not enable browser_run_code_unsafe for a client you do not trust: it permits arbitrary JavaScript and is labeled RCE-equivalent in the official documentation.
Performance, reliability, and operating costs
This setup runs a browser and an MCP server, so it is a different workflow from sending a URL to a screenshot API. The documentation covers headed and headless execution, browser selection, connection choices, profile state, and a heartbeat timeout; it does not establish a universal speed, reliability figure, or resource requirement. Actual behavior depends on the browser, page, network, client, and workflow.
For fewer surprises, use a dedicated test profile for repeatable tasks, choose isolation when state leakage would be a problem, and use persistent or saved state only when authentication is needed. Keep browser changes and unsafe code execution within the trust boundary of your MCP client. No per-use price is specified in the cited Playwright setup documentation; operating cost depends on your Node.js, browser, client, and hosting environment.
