Yes. PlayStation Portal can use Remote Play over Wi-Fi away from home, but it streams compatible games from your PS5—it is not a standalone console. Before you leave, enable Remote Play on the PS5, set it up to stay connected in Rest Mode if you want to wake it remotely, and test a Portal connection at home. At your destination, connect Portal to broadband Wi-Fi and start Remote Play.
What you need for Portal Remote Play away from home
- A PS5 connected to the internet and signed in to the same PlayStation account as Portal.
- Compatible games installed on that PS5. Portal Remote Play does not connect to a PS4.
- Wi-Fi at the destination, as well as an internet connection for the PS5 at home.
Remote Play uses your own PS5 as the source of the game stream. It is different from Cloud Streaming, which streams eligible games from PlayStation’s servers and has separate eligibility and subscription conditions. This guide covers Remote Play. Prepare your PS5 before you travel
- Connect the PS5 to the internet, sign in with the PlayStation account you will use on Portal, and install any available PS5 system software update.
- On the PS5, go to Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play.
- If you want to connect while the PS5 is in Rest Mode, go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
- Leave the PS5 connected to the internet. It must be on or in Rest Mode with the network options configured to be available for a remote session.
These are Sony’s Remote Play setup instructions. If the PS5 will be fully powered off, you cannot rely on the Rest Mode network options to wake it.
Set up Portal and test the connection at home
- Complete Portal’s initial setup while connected to your home Wi-Fi. Sony says this initial home-network setup is required before using public Wi-Fi.
- Sign in to Portal with the same PlayStation account used on the PS5.
- While near the PS5, open Remote Play on Portal and confirm it connects and starts a game.
Testing at home helps catch account or console-setting problems while the PS5 is within reach. Sony also notes that Portal may not search for or connect to the PS5 if it has been a while since the last sign-in. See Sony’s Portal system software and feature information.

Connect from another Wi-Fi network
- At your destination, connect Portal to the available broadband Wi-Fi network.
- From Portal’s Remote Play home screen, start Remote Play and select your PS5 if prompted.
You do not have to be on your home Wi-Fi, but the PS5 must still be online and available. Sony says some public Wi-Fi networks require extra validation, which may be completed using a phone or tablet after Portal’s initial home setup. Not every public network is guaranteed to work. Sony’s Portal FAQ says the home network is not required, while noting that you have more control over its quality.

These figures are speed guidance, not a promise of smooth play. Sony says quality varies with the network environment; a venue’s advertised or measured speed alone does not establish that latency and stability will be good enough for a reliable session.

Remote Play compatibility, membership, and audio
Games and consoles
Portal Remote Play streams compatible games installed on a PS5; it does not connect to a PS4. Check Sony’s Portal compatibility information if you need to confirm device or feature compatibility.
PlayStation Plus
A PlayStation Plus membership is not required for Portal Remote Play itself. A game may still require membership for its online multiplayer features, depending on the game.

Headphones and earbuds
Audio accessories are optional. Portal supports wired headsets or earbuds with a 3.5 mm input jack, as well as PlayStation Link devices such as PULSE Explore earbuds and the PULSE Elite headset. Sony lists these options on its Portal product page.

If Portal cannot connect while you are away
- Check the PS5’s availability: Confirm it is connected to the internet and is on or in Rest Mode with both network options enabled.
- Check the account: Portal and PS5 need to use the same PlayStation account.
- Check the destination network: Complete any public Wi-Fi validation steps; a network that blocks required connections may not work.
- Check the setup: If you did not complete initial Portal setup on home Wi-Fi or test Remote Play before leaving, those are useful checks to perform next time the devices are together.
