During a YouTube live stream or Premiere, the creator can pin one short Live Chat message inviting viewers to subscribe. Keep it plain text, under YouTube’s 200-character message limit, and free of URLs. Pinning makes the invitation visible in chat; it does not guarantee more subscriptions, and no conversion lift or best-performing wording is established by the official guidance covered here.
What a pinned message can—and cannot—do
A pinned message keeps one selected Live Chat message highlighted for viewers using the YouTube watch page. The creator can pin their own message or a viewer’s message. Only the creator can pin, and only one message can be pinned at a time; pinning another replaces the current one. YouTube Help describes the replacement action this way: “To replace a pinned message, simply pin another message.”
Treat the pin as a visible reminder to subscribe, not a proven growth tactic. YouTube’s feature guidance explains how pinning works, but does not establish that a pinned prompt increases subscriptions or identify wording that converts best.
Write a short, compliant subscription prompt
Use a courteous sentence that makes the requested action clear. For example: “Enjoying the stream? Subscribe to the channel for more—thanks for watching!” This is an editorial example, not wording shown to perform better than alternatives.

- Keep the message within YouTube’s 200-character Live Chat limit.
- Use plain text. YouTube says Live Chat messages cannot contain special characters, URLs, or HTML tags.
- Do not add a link to a subscribe page or another destination. The prompt should ask viewers to subscribe to the channel, without a URL.
- Keep the tone appropriate to the stream and avoid implying that subscribing is required to watch unless that is actually how the stream is configured.
Pin the message from the creator account
- Open the live stream or Premiere on YouTube and open its Live Chat.
- Find the message you want to pin. It can be a message posted by the creator or by a viewer.
- Open the message’s More menu and select Pin.
- Check the chat to confirm the intended message is pinned. If another message is already pinned, pinning this one replaces it.
To remove the pin, use Unpin from the pinned message’s menu. Moderators and viewers cannot pin a message; the creator must perform the pinning action.
Keep the prompt current on a continuous stream
- Choose one concise invitation that matches the channel and the stream’s purpose.
- Post it as plain text from the creator account, then pin it using the steps above.
- Check periodically that the intended version is still pinned, especially after an interruption or a change to the stream.
- If the call to action changes, pin the updated message. Pinning a new one replaces the previous pin.
YouTube documents replacing and unpinning a message, but the guidance covered here does not promise that a pin persists through stream restarts or interruptions. For a 24/7 broadcast, verify the pin rather than assuming it survived a new stream session.

Make sure viewers can see and use Live Chat
Live Chat is available on YouTube watch pages, not in embedded players. A viewer watching an embedded version should not be assumed to see the pinned chat prompt. YouTube also notes that some chat features may be unavailable when a chat is subscribers-only; this affects chat participation, but does not mean the viewer loses the option to subscribe to the channel.

Common problems and what to check
- You cannot find Pin: Confirm that you are using the creator account. Only the creator can pin messages.
- The wrong message is pinned: Pin the correct message; it replaces the current one. Confirm the visible pinned text afterward.
- The prompt is not visible to an embedded viewer: Direct the viewer to the YouTube watch page, where Live Chat is available.
- A message is rejected or cannot be used as written: Shorten it to no more than 200 characters and remove URLs, HTML tags, and special characters.
- The prompt is missing after an interruption: Reopen chat and check the pin. YouTube’s pin instructions do not establish persistence across stream restarts.
- Viewers cannot send chat messages: Check whether Live Chat is enabled and review moderation or slow-mode settings. A restricted ability to chat is separate from the ability to subscribe.
