PhantomJS itself ran JavaScript, not Python. That integration is obsolete: PhantomJS says development is suspended, its GitHub repository is archived, and its 2.1 release dates to 2016. For new Python automation, use Selenium with a maintained browser such as Chrome.
What PhantomJS with Python actually means
PhantomJS was a headless browser based on QtWebKit, with JavaScript scripting and a page API. It was used for browser automation, screenshots, headless testing, and network monitoring. Python did not run PhantomJS page scripts. Instead, a Python program could send browser commands through Selenium/WebDriver to the separate PhantomJS executable, with GhostDriver providing the WebDriver interface.
The PhantomJS command-line reference describes running JavaScript files with phantomjs [options] somescript.js; its page.open(url, callback) API also belongs to JavaScript. The callback receives a status such as success or fail. See the PhantomJS command-line reference and page.open API.
Why PhantomJS is not a good choice for new projects
The PhantomJS project states, “Important: PhantomJS development is suspended until further notice.” PhantomJS 2.1 was released on January 23, 2016, and the GitHub repository has been archived and read-only since May 30, 2023. These are material maintenance and update limitations for a browser automation dependency.

For new work, choose a browser supported by current Selenium and appropriate to the browser engine your application needs to support. Selenium documents Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, WebKitGTK, and WPEWebKit. If a job only needs HTTP requests and HTML parsing, a browser may be unnecessary; use browser automation when JavaScript rendering or interaction with the page matters. Selenium can run locally, or teams can use Remote WebDriver/Grid for remote execution.
Use Selenium with headless Chrome in Python

Selenium Manager generally handles driver setup when webdriver.Chrome() is instantiated. If you install ChromeDriver yourself, the official Chrome guidance says its major version must match Chrome’s major version. Check the Selenium WebDriver documentation and ChromeDriver version-selection guide for current setup details.
Choose a browser for the behavior you need
- Chrome: a practical default when Chromium behavior is what you need to exercise; the example uses Chrome’s
--headless=newoption. - Another supported browser: use Firefox, Edge, Safari, WebKitGTK, or WPEWebKit when that engine or browser is the test target. Selenium’s browser-specific setup may differ.
- Remote execution: use Selenium Grid/Remote WebDriver when the browser should run on another machine or as part of a distributed test setup, rather than assuming the local script and browser must share a host.
If you must keep a PhantomJS integration running
Treat this as legacy maintenance, not a recommended new setup. The PhantomJS CLI documentation is for version 2.1.1 and describes embedded GhostDriver starting in --webdriver mode, with the default address 127.0.0.1:8910. The available documentation does not establish compatibility between a particular current Selenium release and PhantomJS, so an old webdriver.PhantomJS(...) snippet should not be assumed to work with current Selenium.

First identify the exact PhantomJS executable, Selenium version, and WebDriver configuration used by the existing application. Keep any compatibility changes isolated and pinned to versions that you have verified in your own environment; do not treat the old API as a current Selenium interface. The historical interface is described in the CLI reference.

Troubleshooting Selenium headless Chrome
Chrome or ChromeDriver is not found
Confirm Chrome is installed and that the Python script is running in the environment where Selenium is installed. Selenium Manager generally resolves the driver at WebDriver creation. If you manage ChromeDriver manually, verify that its major version matches Chrome’s.

The browser starts but the page is not the expected one
Check the URL and inspect the page through WebDriver before assuming the headless option is at fault. Pages that render content asynchronously may need an explicit wait for the relevant element rather than an immediate read after navigation. Headless execution does not remove the need to account for page load timing.
An old PhantomJS script fails with current Selenium
That failure may reflect the legacy integration rather than a Python syntax error. The official PhantomJS documentation describes its old GhostDriver/CLI setup but does not establish compatibility with current Selenium releases. For new or actively maintained automation, migrate to a browser and WebDriver flow documented by Selenium.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
- Performance: the cited project and Selenium documentation do not provide a comparable benchmark showing PhantomJS or a replacement is faster. Choose based on required browser behavior, and measure your own workload if runtime is a constraint.
- Reliability: align the automated browser with the engine you need to test. Headless mode is a way to run a browser without a visible window, not proof that every headed and headless behavior is identical.
- Maintenance: PhantomJS’s suspended development and archived repository make it a poor default for software that needs ongoing browser updates. Use a supported browser flow for new automation.
- Cost: Selenium is an automation library; running a local browser has no per-screenshot API charge specified by the cited Selenium sources, though your infrastructure and maintenance have costs. Remote browser services may have their own pricing, which should be checked with the provider.
