Add a looping Media Source for one video, or a VLC Video source for a playlist, then test the complete stream before leaving the PC unattended.
What OBS portable mode does—and what it does not do
Portable mode keeps OBS configuration alongside the application folder rather than in the usual user-profile location. This can help keep a dedicated setup separate or let you move the OBS configuration folder between locations. It does not bundle the media files referenced by a scene collection: images and videos still need to be accessible at their saved paths. Set up OBS portable mode on Windows
- Get the ZIP distribution. Download the Windows ZIP build of OBS Studio from the OBS portable-mode instructions. Extract it to a folder you control, preferably in a user folder. Do not extract it under
Program Files. - Choose how to enable portable mode. For a persistent setup, create an empty file named
portable_modeorportable_mode.txtin the extracted OBS root—the same folder that contains thebindirectory. Alternatively, launch OBS with the--portableoption. - Launch OBS. Run
bin/64bit/obs64.exe. Confirm the intended profile and scene collection load, or create them if this is a fresh installation.
The marker file is a persistent choice for that OBS folder. The launch flag is useful in a shortcut or automated command. Neither method makes scene media portable; paths to media remain a separate issue.
Make one video loop continuously
- In OBS, create or select the scene for the stream.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add a Media Source.
- Choose the local video file and enable Loop in the source properties.
- Confirm the video appears in the preview, then check the audio meters while it plays.
OBS provides a Loop property, but gapless playback is not guaranteed for every file and PC. Play through the end of the video during testing to check the transition on your actual setup. OBS Project: Media Sources

Loop an ordered playlist
For multiple files, add a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. This method requires VLC to be installed; use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. VLC Video also exposes playlist behavior such as shuffle, so check the source properties if the playback order matters. OBS Project: Media Sources
Use Media Source when the stream is one local file. Use VLC Video when it should cycle through multiple files or when playlist controls are needed. Keep the files at stable paths on the dedicated PC.

Keep media paths valid
Portable mode moves or separates OBS configuration; it does not move the files used in a scene collection. The OBS Project states: “At this time, files used within the scene collection (images, media) are not portable, even when in portable mode.” OBS Project: Running in Portable Mode
- On a dedicated PC, keep the loop video and any other assets in a stable folder and avoid renaming or moving them after configuring the scene.
- If you relocate the OBS folder or use it on another device, make sure each referenced media path exists there; otherwise update the scene collection’s media paths.
- A USB drive can carry the OBS folder and media when moving a setup, but it does not automatically repair paths or make the stream more reliable.
Configure startup and automatic streaming
OBS supports launch options for portable mode, streaming startup, and selecting a configuration. Its documented options include --portable (or -p), --startstreaming, --collection, --profile, and --scene. For a Windows scheduled or automated launch, OBS instructs users to set the working directory—Windows’ Start in… field—to the folder containing obs64.exe. Consult the OBS launch parameters for the supported syntax.

These options can select OBS configuration and request streaming at launch. They do not, by themselves, configure every part of unattended Windows operation. Auto-login, power recovery after an outage, and a watchdog that restarts a failed process are separate system-administration concerns; the cited OBS documentation does not establish a complete setup for those tasks. Create and test your actual shortcut or scheduled task, including its working directory, before relying on it.
Set up and test the YouTube stream
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key from your YouTube live-stream setup. Treat the key as a secret: anyone who obtains it may be able to stream to your channel.
- Choose output settings for your connection and stream. In Settings > Output, configure the encoder and bitrate. There is no universal bitrate in the cited OBS guidance: the appropriate setting depends on your upload capacity and the streaming service’s limits. See OBS’s streaming overview and connection guidance and YouTube’s current live encoder requirements before choosing settings.
- Check reconnect behavior. OBS identifies automatic reconnect as an Advanced setting. Review Settings > Advanced and test what happens if the connection drops; automatic reconnect does not replace a reliable network or a full unattended-computer recovery plan. - Run a short live test. Check the selected service, server, stream key, video, audio meters, and actual audio at the destination. OBS’s Quick Start guide recommends checking output settings and running a test before going live.
- Test the loop and relaunch path. Let the media reach its end, verify playback continues as intended, then test the same shortcut or scheduled task you plan to use. Confirm it loads the intended profile, collection, scene, and working directory.
Check rights and YouTube rules before looping content
A technically valid loop is not automatically permitted content. Before streaming, make sure you have the rights needed for every video, image, and audio track, including music embedded in a recording. YouTube may apply its copyright policies to live streams. Repeatedly broadcasting prerecorded material can also raise channel-policy and monetization questions; suitability depends on the content and the applicable YouTube rules. Review YouTube’s copyright policies and YouTube’s channel monetization policies for the current requirements. A loop setting does not grant permission to use someone else’s work.

Troubleshoot common problems
