For an OBS-based YouTube gaming stream, add a VLC Video source to a scene, load the media files into its playlist, and choose whether playback should loop, shuffle, or stop after one pass. Install VLC first; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC. For automatic scene or source control beyond playlist playback, OBS’s built-in WebSocket system can work with compatible tools, but secure it and test the integration before going live.

The workflow is the same for creators in India as elsewhere: the official guidance does not identify an India-only OBS playlist feature. The key decisions are how the playlist behaves during scene changes, how YouTube receives the stream, and whether you have rights to every game, music track, and video in the broadcast.

What OBS playlist automation can—and cannot—do

OBS Studio’s VLC Video source is its documented option for playing a playlist of multiple media files. Add local files, then configure ordered or shuffled playback and looping. A regular Media Source, by contrast, plays an individual media file.

Playlist playback is not the same as fully automated show control. The VLC source can handle its configured playback behavior, while actions such as advancing a source or controlling scenes can be assigned to OBS hotkeys or sent through OBS WebSocket by compatible external software. The WebSocket protocol includes media actions such as NEXT; exact behavior depends on the OBS version, source, and integration, so test the specific setup you plan to use.

OBS has included WebSocket since version 28, according to its Remote Control Guide. A WebSocket controller is optional; it is not required for a playlist that simply loops or shuffles by itself.

Prepare OBS and VLC

  1. Install OBS Studio and VLC. The VLC Video source relies on VLC libraries, so VLC must be installed. Match the architecture: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See the OBS media sources documentation.
  2. Prepare the media files. OBS documents formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM for its regular Media Source, and MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV for audio. Those format notes describe Media Source support; confirm your files play correctly through the VLC Video source in your installed setup.
  3. Open or create the scene that should show the playlist. In the Sources dock, add a VLC Video source and add the local media files to its playlist.
  4. Arrange the scene. Position and size the source as needed, and check that it is above any background or overlay that should sit behind it. Preview the scene before connecting to YouTube.

Choose playlist behavior

Open the VLC Video source’s properties and set the playback behavior to match the show. OBS documents options to loop and shuffle the playlist, as well as behavior for when the source is not visible.

Choice Use it when What to verify
Ordered playback You want files to play in the playlist’s listed sequence. Confirm the file order and test the transition between adjacent items.
Shuffle You want playback in a varied order rather than a fixed sequence. Check that shuffled playback suits the stream; do not assume a particular external controller is needed.
Loop playlist You want the playlist to start again after reaching its end. Test the last-to-first transition and ensure the playlist contains the intended files.
One pass You want the playlist to finish without repeating. Decide what viewers should see or hear after the final item ends.

Also choose what happens when the source is hidden. Depending on the setting, OBS can stop it, pause it, or restart it when it becomes visible. This matters when switching from gameplay to another scene: playback might continue, pause, or begin again when you return. Switch scenes in a test and observe the result before relying on it during a broadcast.

Add manual or external controls if needed

Use an OBS hotkey for simple controls

If you only need a manual next, previous, or playback action, check OBS’s hotkey settings for the installed version and source. Assign only the controls you need, then test them while watching the preview. Hotkey availability and behavior can depend on the source and OBS version.

Use WebSocket for compatible external automation

For control from external software, configure a compatible OBS WebSocket integration. OBS recommends password protection for remote control. Do not expose an unprotected control connection; anyone who can access it may be able to affect the broadcast. Test each action—including any media-next action—on the precise OBS installation and source type intended for the stream.

See the obs-websocket protocol documentation for protocol actions. Integrations vary, so do not assume a particular app, keypad, or control surface will behave identically.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Enable live streaming and verify channel eligibility. YouTube’s guidance says the channel must be verified, have live streaming enabled, and have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Check YouTube’s live-streaming requirements before scheduling a broadcast.
  2. Open YouTube Studio and select Go Live. Create or select an encoder stream in Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, use its associated event and wait for the preview.
  3. Copy the server URL and stream key from YouTube’s encoder stream settings into OBS’s stream configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion; use the server URL provided by YouTube. Follow its encoder setup instructions.
  4. Start a test stream and inspect the preview. Confirm that the playlist or gameplay scene appears, audio is audible and correctly balanced, and YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream before going live to viewers.
  5. Monitor the broadcast. Check both picture and audio during the event, especially after scene changes and playlist transitions.

Choose resolution and other encoder settings that your upload connection can sustain, then verify them in a private or unlisted test using representative gameplay movement and audio. The cited official guidance does not prescribe a single bitrate or resolution for every India-based channel; a setting that works on one connection may not work on another. YouTube’s live encoder settings provide its current recommendations.

Protect the stream key and clear playlist rights

Treat the key as a credential

YouTube describes stream keys as like a stream’s “password and address.” Keep the key private and do not show it in a screen capture or share it with an untrusted person. If you believe it has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in OBS. See Manage live stream settings.

Check game, music, and media permissions

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can replace the broadcast with a placeholder, trigger a warning, or interrupt or terminate the stream if the content remains; an archived stream may also receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast. YouTube’s livestream terms require creators to have the necessary rights, including music licensing rights, for content they stream.

Before adding an item, confirm you are authorized to livestream and archive it. This includes background music, gameplay audio, trailers, clips, and files in a looping playlist. A licence may require the rights owner to allowlist your channel in Content ID. Consult YouTube’s guidance on copyrighted content in live streams and its Terms of Service; a playlist setting does not grant rights.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
VLC Video source is unavailable or will not play files VLC is missing, its architecture does not match OBS, or the file is not working with the source. Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS install 64-bit VLC. Test the media file in the intended source and verify that the file is accessible.
Playlist stops or restarts after a scene change The source’s hidden behavior is set to stop, pause, or restart. Review the VLC source visibility setting and switch scenes in a test to confirm the desired behavior.
Playlist ends instead of repeating Loop Playlist is not enabled, or the playlist behavior differs from what you expected. Check the loop setting and test the transition from the final item back to the first.
External next/scene control does nothing The integration is not connected, the action is unsupported for that source or version, or its configuration is incorrect. Check the integration’s connection and action mapping, then test against the exact OBS version and source. Keep WebSocket password protection enabled.
YouTube does not show the OBS output The wrong stream or event is selected, the URL or key is incorrect, or YouTube is not receiving the encoder feed. Compare OBS’s server URL and key with the selected Live Control Room stream, then wait for the preview and check stream health. Reset a potentially exposed key.
Stream quality is unstable The chosen output may exceed what the upload connection can sustain. Run a private or unlisted test with representative gameplay and audio; lower settings as needed and check YouTube’s stream-health feedback.
Broadcast is interrupted or archive is claimed Third-party content may have matched, or the channel may lack necessary streaming or archive rights. Review YouTube’s copyright notice and permissions for the game audio, music, and playlist media. Remove or replace unlicensed material and resolve any required Content ID allowlisting with the rights owner.
