To stream a podcast from Ubuntu, install OBS Studio, build a scene with your audio and a visual, connect OBS to the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room, then test before your scheduled broadcast. YouTube’s general encoder workflow applies in India; use the ingest details shown in your own Live Control Room rather than assuming a special regional server address.
1. Check that your YouTube channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Enable live streaming and create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room using the encoder workflow. Check eligibility well before the broadcast, since setting up OBS cannot remove a channel restriction. YouTube’s live-streaming tips
2. Install OBS Studio on Ubuntu
OBS’s official Linux instructions cover Ubuntu 18.04 or newer and describe installation through the OBS Project PPA and apt. Follow the current commands on the OBS Linux installation page, since repository and package instructions can change. The documented package installation command is sudo apt install obs-studio.
On first launch, run the Auto-Configuration Wizard and choose streaming. OBS says the wizard considers your hardware resources and network conditions. Its Quick Start Guide explains the initial setup.

3. Build an audio-first podcast scene
In OBS, create a scene for the episode and add only what the broadcast needs. An audio podcast can use a static cover image or title card; a live show can add a camera. Sources higher in the list appear above sources below them. OBS documents images, text, video capture, display or window capture, and media as possible sources in its Sources Guide.
Add a recorded segment
To play a prerecorded intro or segment, add a Media Source. OBS supports common audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV, as well as video. VLC playlist support requires VLC to be installed. See OBS Media Sources.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Capture a live microphone without doubling it
For a live host, add the microphone through Linux audio capture and watch its level in the OBS Audio Mixer while speaking at normal volume. OBS’s Linux audio guidance covers ALSA and PulseAudio capture; its Audio Sources guide describes source choices. If you add a device directly as a scene source, disable that same device under Settings → Audio so OBS does not capture it globally as well. Capturing one microphone twice can produce duplicate audio or echo.

4. Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Get the encoder details. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, open the event’s stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Enter the details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select the YouTube RTMPS service if it is offered; otherwise use the manual server option and paste the RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room. When entering a server manually, confirm the URL begins with
rtmps://, notrtmp://. YouTube explains encoder settings and stream credentials in its encoder settings guidance. - Keep the key private. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not show it in an on-air scene, public document, or screenshot.
The official workflow does not establish an India-only OBS configuration or special ingest endpoint. Use the URL and key that your Live Control Room displays, and assess the actual upload connection at the venue.

5. Set encoder quality to fit your connection
YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; CBR bitrate encoding; a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds; and AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate. Choose settings your encoder supports and test them before the event. YouTube encoder settings
Bitrate must fit your sustained upload bandwidth, not your download speed. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. Its bitrate table gives 2 Mbps as an example for 720p at 30 fps; treat that as a starting point, not a guarantee of stability on your network. Run an upload speed test and select a resolution and frame rate that your connection can sustain. YouTube streaming tips · YouTube bitrate table

A static image accompanying a podcast does not need a high frame rate for motion. There is no single prescribed resolution or frame rate for every audio-first stream, so prioritize reliable audio and a tested bitrate over unnecessary visual detail.

6. Test the broadcast before the episode
- Run a short private or unlisted test. Speak at normal volume, play any media segments, and confirm the intended microphone and audio levels in OBS.
- Check the OBS preview for the correct image, camera, and source layering. Confirm the audio is present and free of obvious duplication.
- Prepare the encoder stream at least two hours before the event, as YouTube advises, and start sending the encoder feed at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start.
- Wait for the preview in Live Control Room, check that the watch page is accessible, and use Live Control Room controls to start the scheduled event. Monitor audio, video, and stream health during the broadcast. YouTube live-streaming tips
- When finished, end the event in YouTube and stop the encoder feed. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. YouTube encoder setup
7. Troubleshoot common problems
- OBS cannot connect: Check that the copied server URL is the one shown in Live Control Room, uses
rtmps://, and that the stream key is current and entered correctly. Re-copying the key can catch a paste error. - YouTube does not show an incoming preview: Confirm OBS is sending the encoder feed and that the correct event and credentials are selected. Allow the preview time to appear before starting the scheduled event.
- Audio is silent or doubled: Check the OBS Audio Mixer while speaking or playing a segment. Verify the intended input is enabled; if it is added as a scene source, disable duplicate capture under Settings → Audio.
- The stream drops or stutters: Lower the bitrate or choose a less demanding resolution or frame rate, then test again. Leave roughly 20% upload headroom over the total stream bitrate and use measured upload performance, not the advertised download rate, as your guide.
- A playlist will not load: If the source is a VLC playlist, install VLC; OBS requires it for VLC playlist support.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want an uploaded podcast recording to keep playing on YouTube without leaving Ubuntu or another computer on, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded quality streams as made up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start a free day at StreamNeo registration.
