To repeat prerecorded videos in OBS, add them to a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. That creates a playlist of media files inside one scene—not an automatic queue of whole OBS scenes. For a rotation between different layouts, create separate scenes and switch between them with OBS transitions; the reviewed OBS documentation does not describe a built-in scheduler that automatically queues scenes.
First decide what you mean by an OBS “scene playlist”
To repeat a sequence of videos or audio files
Use a VLC Video source. OBS documents this source as able to play a list of media files, loop that list, and optionally shuffle it. VLC must be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
To switch between different layouts
Create a separate OBS scene for each composition—for example, a title card, a prerecorded segment, or a break screen—and switch scenes using transitions. Scene Collections save scenes and their sources for different productions. They are not output profiles: OBS says to use Profiles for output settings. The Scene Collections guide explains the distinction.

- Install VLC. Match its architecture to OBS: the OBS guide specifically requires 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- Open the scene where the playlist should appear. In the Sources panel, add a VLC Video source. OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes the source and its media-list controls.
- Add the files to the source’s playlist. Arrange them in the intended playback order. Enable Loop Playlist to repeat the list; enable shuffle only if you want the order randomized.
- Check visibility behavior. By default, a VLC Video source stops when hidden and restarts when visible. If you reuse it across scenes, review this setting and test what happens when you switch away and back.
- Preview the full sequence. Confirm that each item plays, the intended order is used, the loop returns to the beginning, and audio and framing are correct before broadcasting.
Organize scenes separately from the media playlist
When the show needs distinct layouts rather than just a run of files, create scenes for those layouts and use OBS’s scene transitions to change the live composition. Use a Scene Collection to keep a production’s scenes and sources together; use a Profile for its output settings. These are separate OBS concepts, not a built-in scene-queue feature. If you need timed, unattended switching between scenes, do not assume OBS includes a universal scheduler: the reviewed official documentation does not establish one. A plugin may add automation, but verify its current compatibility and behavior before depending on it. OBS maintains plugin documentation.
Connect OBS to YouTube and verify channel eligibility
- Check live-stream access first. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until just before a planned launch. Details are in YouTube’s Get started with live streaming help page.
- Choose encoder streaming in YouTube Studio and get the stream details, including the stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover the platform side.
- Configure OBS’s streaming service and stream key. In OBS, select the streaming service or enter the server details YouTube provides, then enter the stream key in OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or show it in a recording.
- Test before going live. Check the OBS preview, audio, scene changes, playlist loop, and the YouTube live preview. OBS advises testing the configuration and scenes before the first live broadcast in its overview guide.
YouTube currently states a limit of 10 active streams per channel and 3 per stream key. These are platform limits, not targets or recommended settings; see its live-streaming eligibility and setup help.

Plan for the failure modes behind “always-on”
A looping source does not by itself make a channel continuously available. A local OBS stream still depends on the computer, power, network, OBS, and the source media continuing to work. The reviewed OBS and YouTube setup guidance explains configuration and testing but does not promise unattended uptime or establish one universal automatic-recovery arrangement.

Decide who will notice and restart it, and whether the machine and power arrangement suit the intended operating period.
- Network interruption: OBS may lose its connection to YouTube. Test the reconnection behavior and have a monitoring and restart plan; do not treat a successful initial connection as a guarantee of recovery.
- Source or playlist issue: a missing or failed file, hidden-source behavior, or an unexpected scene switch can interrupt playback. Test the complete playlist and every scene path.
- YouTube restriction or stream interruption: confirm channel eligibility and check YouTube Studio for stream status rather than assuming the OBS preview proves the public broadcast is healthy.
Copyright remains the channel operator’s responsibility. Use media you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable rules before running a continuous broadcast. Troubleshoot common OBS playlist and live-stream problems
The VLC Video source is missing or will not play files
Confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS. In particular, 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC according to the OBS Media Sources guide. Reopen OBS after installation and test the source with a known playable file.
The playlist stops when changing scenes
Check whether the VLC source is hidden when you switch scenes. Its default behavior is to stop when hidden and restart when visible. Review the source’s visibility-related setting and test the exact scene-switch sequence you plan to use.

The list plays once and stops
Open the VLC Video source’s playlist controls and enable Loop Playlist. Shuffle is optional and changes ordering; it is not required for looping.

The stream does not appear on YouTube
Verify that live streaming is enabled for the channel, that OBS has the correct service/server details and stream key, and that YouTube Studio is showing the intended stream. For first-time enablement, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. Never share the stream key publicly.

The stream drops and does not resume
Check the computer, power, network, OBS connection, and YouTube Studio status. The official OBS and YouTube setup pages reviewed here do not document a universal failover recipe or guarantee that a local setup will recover unattended; test your recovery plan under realistic conditions.
