Use object storage as the origin for your video files, prepare those files for playback, and put a content delivery network (CDN) between the storage bucket and viewers. For video on demand (VOD), that usually means uploading a source, encoding and packaging it into segments and manifests, storing those outputs, and having the player request them through the CDN. For livestreaming, a media pipeline writes the live outputs to storage while viewers fetch them through a CDN. Object storage is an origin layer—not a complete streaming system by itself.

What object storage does in a streaming setup

An object store holds media as objects in buckets or similar containers. In a typical architecture, it is the durable origin from which a CDN retrieves video when the requested content is not already cached. The CDN can then serve cached copies to viewers without repeating every read against the origin. AWS documents this model with Amazon S3 and CloudFront for on-demand viewing: Amazon S3 and CloudFront video tutorial.

Storage alone does not encode a video, create adaptive renditions, generate a manifest, or deliver a low-latency stream. Those functions belong to an encoder or media pipeline, packaging workflow, CDN, and playback application. Google recommends sending customer traffic for both VOD and livestream distribution through a CDN; placement of storage and compute should account for audience geography and pipeline topology: Google Cloud media and entertainment architecture guidance.

Build a VOD workflow from upload to playback

  1. Upload the source asset. Put the original recording in the object store. For a production workflow, keep source assets distinguishable from delivery outputs, for example with separate bucket paths or buckets, and define who can upload, process, and read each set.
  2. Encode and package for the player. Create the renditions and delivery format your player supports. Adaptive streaming generally requires media split into segments plus a manifest that tells the player what is available. AWS identifies HLS, MPEG-DASH, Smooth Streaming, and CMAF as common formats; a single stored MP4 source is not, by itself, an adaptive stream. See AWS guidance on preparing on-demand video for CloudFront.
  3. Store the manifests and segments. Preserve the paths and references generated by the packager. Test that each manifest points to objects that exist and that the CDN can retrieve them. Keep the object naming and cache policy appropriate to whether assets are immutable or may be replaced.
  4. Configure a CDN with the bucket as origin. Set the origin access and caching behavior deliberately. Restrict direct bucket access where appropriate, while allowing the CDN to fetch the objects it needs. Configure the public playback URL to use the CDN rather than exposing the origin as the normal viewer endpoint.
  5. Point the player at the CDN manifest. Test playback from the same kind of network and geography as the intended audience. Verify rendition switching, seeking, expiration or authorization behavior, and what happens when an object is missing or a cached version is stale.

Deliver livestream outputs from object storage

For a storage-backed live workflow, an encoder or transcoder produces segments and manifests as the event runs, writes them to the bucket, and viewers request them through a CDN. Google documents livestream buckets that accept transcoder writes while a CDN reads for viewers; it recommends considering the location of transcoding compute, storage, and the audience together. A bucket close to the encoder may reduce pipeline distance, while CDN delivery helps serve geographically distributed viewers.

Segment duration is a latency and reliability choice, not a universal setting. Google’s guidance recommends a lowest segment size of two seconds for livestreams, noting that very short segments are more sensitive to long-tail write latency. It also notes that longer segments can help when viewers are far from the bucket. Treat this as Google’s provider-specific guidance and validate the resulting latency and playback behavior in your own pipeline: Google Cloud media workload guidance.

Validate byte ranges, caching, and access

Seeking and partial reads

Players and CDNs may request only part of a media object, especially for seeking or large-object delivery. Confirm that the origin and CDN handle byte-range requests as expected, including the status and headers required by your chosen CDN: a successful partial response commonly uses 206 Partial Content and a correct Content-Range. Also check object length and validators such as ETag or Last-Modified when the CDN or cache workflow relies on them. Google Media CDN describes origin requirements and says objects larger than 1 MiB are fetched as byte-range requests of up to 2 MiB each; those values describe Google Media CDN behavior, not a general rule for all CDNs: Google Media CDN caching documentation.

Cloudflare notes that its origin range requests may be aligned differently from the client’s requested range, so test the actual response behavior rather than assuming the origin sees precisely the viewer’s range: Cloudflare cache behavior documentation.

Cache freshness and permissions

CDN caching reduces repeated origin reads, but a cached object may not immediately reflect a replacement or update. Choose cache headers and invalidation or versioning practices with that delay in mind. Cloudflare describes R2 tiered read caching and says reads through a custom domain can use Cloudflare Cache; its R2 architecture documentation cautions that cached data may not immediately reflect the latest version: Cloudflare R2 architecture documentation.

For private or paid media, do not treat an unguessable URL as a complete access-control policy. Decide whether viewers need signed URLs, tokens, or another authorization layer, and ensure the CDN’s origin permissions do not unintentionally make the bucket public. The exact controls vary by provider and CDN.

Upload large video files reliably

Upload strategy affects resilience as well as speed. Cloudflare R2 recommends a single PUT for smaller uploads and multipart uploads for large files or when parallelism or resumability matters. Its guide describes single uploads for files under approximately 100 MB, multipart uploads for large files, and a maximum multipart object size of 5 TiB; these are R2-specific guidance and limits, not general object-storage limits: Cloudflare R2 upload guide.

Choose a storage and delivery design

There is no workload-independent provider winner established by these architectures. Compare the options against your existing cloud stack and the media work your team wants to operate. Cloudflare positions Stream as a managed option for video upload, encoding, and adaptive-bitrate delivery, while R2 is object storage with caching options. That is a different scope from assembling an object store, encoder/packager, and CDN yourself: Cloudflare Stream product overview.

Decision Questions to answer
Media processing Will your team encode and package, or do you need an integrated managed media service?
Audience and placement Where are viewers concentrated, and how do bucket and compute locations fit the pipeline?
CDN behavior Does it support the required byte ranges, cache policy, access controls, and freshness behavior?
Upload pattern Are assets small enough for simple uploads, or do you need parallel, resumable multipart transfers?
Live requirements What latency can viewers tolerate, and can the storage and CDN handle concurrent writes and reads?

Cost comparisons should include more than stored gigabytes: measure or model storage, requests, CDN delivery, encoding and packaging, and any egress or cache-miss charges for the providers and regions you are considering. The provider documentation cited here does not establish a comparable cross-provider price, startup-time, buffering, or throughput result.

Troubleshoot common playback failures

  • The manifest loads but playback fails: inspect the manifest’s segment URLs, confirm those objects exist, and verify that the CDN is authorized to fetch them. Check for incorrect paths, case mismatches, or blocked cross-origin requests if your player requires them.
  • Seeking fails or stalls: inspect range responses and headers at both origin and CDN. Confirm partial requests return the expected status and byte range, and check whether the CDN has its own range-fetch behavior.
  • Viewers see an old version: check cache lifetime and invalidation behavior. For frequently replaced assets, consider versioned object paths so a new file does not rely on every cache refreshing the old path at once.
  • Live playback falls behind or has gaps: check whether the encoder has completed writing a segment before the manifest advertises it, and review write latency, segment duration, and the locations of the encoder, bucket, and audience. Extremely short segments may be more sensitive to long-tail write delays.
  • Large uploads fail partway through: use a resumable or multipart method supported by the provider, and verify that incomplete uploads are cleaned up according to your storage workflow.
  • Access works at the origin but not through the CDN: review origin permissions, signed access configuration, cache rules, and whether the CDN is requesting the expected host and object path.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is specifically to keep prerecorded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, that is a different job from building a general VOD or live-media platform from object storage. StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
