On the Galaxy Z Fold7’s unfolded main display, Samsung’s Multi window swipe gestures let you open an app in split screen with two fingers or in a floating pop-up with one finger. Enable the relevant switch at Settings > Advanced features > Multi window first.
Turn on split-screen gestures
- Open Settings.
- Tap Advanced features, then Multi window.
- Turn on Swipe for split screen.
- Open the app you want to use on the unfolded main display. Swipe up from the bottom edge with two fingers to place it in split screen. To place it on a particular side, swipe inward from that side with two fingers.
Samsung’s Fold7 guide describes this setting for either screen, but its general Multi window guidance says split screen and pop-up view are not supported on the front screen of Galaxy Z Fold devices. Use the unfolded main display for these multitasking gestures. Samsung’s Fold7 screen guide and general Multi window guidance describe the features and limits.
Open an app as a pop-up window
- Go to Settings > Advanced features > Multi window.
- Turn on Swipe for pop-up view.
- Open the app, then swipe inward toward the middle from either the top-left or top-right corner with one finger.
The app opens in a floating window rather than taking one of the split-screen regions.
Choose split screen or pop-up view
| Mode | Gesture | What it does | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Split screen | Two fingers: swipe up from the bottom or inward from a side | Places the app in a region of the display alongside another app. | You want two apps visible in separate screen regions. |
| Pop-up view | One finger: swipe inward from either top corner | Opens the app in a floating window. | You want an app in a movable window instead of a fixed split-screen region. |
Both modes depend on app compatibility, and neither should be assumed to work in every app or on every display.
#1 Best Overall
- A premium foldable smartphone featuring an 8.0" Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display, 6.5" cover display, 200MP main camera, Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy processor, up to 16GB RAM and 1TB storage, 4,400mAh battery, and a slim 215g design.
Use Multi window without a swipe
Start from the Edge panel
- If Edge panels are off, enable them under Settings > Display.
- Open the Edge panel using its side handle.
- Drag an app to a screen region for split view, or to the center for pop-up view.
Start from Recents
- Open the Recents screen.
- Tap the app icon above its preview.
- Choose Open in split screen view or Open in pop-up view.
Samsung documents these as alternatives for starting Multi window when a gesture is unavailable. Its Fold7 guide explains the Edge panel and Recents routes.
If a gesture or option is missing
- Confirm the relevant switch is on under Settings > Advanced features > Multi window. Check Swipe for split screen for two-finger split-screen gestures and Swipe for pop-up view for the one-finger corner gesture.
- Try the gesture on the unfolded main display. Samsung’s general guidance says these views are unsupported on the Fold-series front screen.
- Check whether the app supports the requested view. Samsung notes that some apps do not support split screen, and Drag and Split may also be incompatible with some apps.
- If the gesture still does not work, try the Edge panel or Recents method. Available settings can vary with software version, device model, and service provider.
These are not Android navigation gestures
Two-finger Multi window swipes are Samsung multitasking controls; they are not Android’s navigation gestures, which use swipes instead of navigation buttons. They are also separate from Samsung’s Motions and gestures settings for actions such as lift to wake, double tap, mute with gestures, and palm swipe to capture. Samsung’s general guidance says finger-sensor gestures are unavailable on the Z Fold7. Samsung’s Motions and gestures guidance and Google’s Android navigation help cover those other controls.
