The exact host and network steps depend on your provider: a direct Amazon RDS connection uses the database endpoint, while Google Cloud SQL’s Auth Proxy lets WordPress connect through a local TCP port or Unix socket.
What managed SQL changes—and what it does not
A managed SQL service moves database operations such as provisioning and maintenance to a cloud provider; it does not automatically connect the database to WordPress. WordPress still runs in an application environment, and that environment needs a working network route, compatible database engine and valid credentials.
WordPress supports MySQL and MariaDB, but minimum supported versions can change. Check the live WordPress requirements and your provider’s engine compatibility before deploying. The WordPress installation guidance cited here names MySQL 5.7 or MariaDB 10.3 and later; do not treat those figures as a guarantee that they are the current minimum for every WordPress release.
Collect the connection details first
Before editing WordPress configuration, obtain these values from your database provider or deployment environment:

- Database name: the database WordPress should use.
- Application database user and password: use a dedicated account with only the permissions needed by the site, rather than an administrative account.
- Host and port or socket: a direct connection generally uses the provider’s endpoint DNS name and port. With a proxy, WordPress may use a local address or Unix socket instead.
- Access permissions: confirm the application environment is authorized to reach the database. That may involve a cloud identity, VPC route, firewall or security-group rule.
- Connection security requirements: determine whether to use a provider proxy, TLS settings, or both, and how your platform supplies secrets to the application.
Do not assume that the database endpoint is always the value WordPress should use for DB_HOST. The correct value depends on the connection path.
Choose and establish the network path
Google Cloud SQL with the Auth Proxy
Google recommends the Cloud SQL Auth Proxy as a connection approach. The proxy authorizes and encrypts connections, so supported configurations do not require authorized networks or manual SSL configuration. It runs in the application environment and exposes a local connection endpoint for WordPress.
- Enable the Cloud SQL Admin API and authorize the identity used by the proxy. Google documents the Cloud SQL Client role, which includes
cloudsql.instances.connect. - Run the proxy in the WordPress application environment using appropriate credentials. It normally listens on
127.0.0.1for TCP or can use a Unix socket. - If you intend to connect through Cloud SQL private IP, run the proxy on a resource with VPC access and configure it to use private IP.
- Configure WordPress’s database host to match the proxy’s actual local listener or socket. Do not expose the proxy listener on an external interface.
Google’s local proxy quickstart is a development and test example, not a full production deployment recipe. In production, keep the proxy running under a supervisor or equivalent process manager and use credentials and permissions appropriate to the workload. AWS Lightsail WordPress to Aurora or RDS
AWS documents a specific Lightsail-to-Aurora path; its requirements should not be generalized to every AWS deployment. In that example, the WordPress Lightsail instance must be running, VPC peering must be enabled, the Aurora database must be running in the same AWS Region, and the database security group must allow the expected source on the database port.

- Enable Lightsail VPC peering for the relevant Region.
- Use a running database in the same Region as the Lightsail instance for the documented Lightsail-to-Aurora setup.
- Configure the database security group to allow ingress from the WordPress-side source on the database port. Restrict the rule to the required source rather than opening it broadly.
- Use the database endpoint DNS name and instance port as the direct connection host and port. Configure TLS where applicable; AWS documents TLS support for RDS MySQL.
For setup specifics, follow the Lightsail connection to Aurora instructions, the RDS connection guidance, and the provider’s current network documentation.

Set WordPress’s database configuration
WordPress reads its database connection settings from wp-config.php. The relevant constants are DB_NAME, DB_USER, DB_PASSWORD and DB_HOST. The first three identify the database and its application credentials; DB_HOST specifies the host and, when needed, port or socket.
For a direct RDS connection, use the provider’s endpoint and port in the host value, following the WordPress and hosting environment’s expected syntax. For a Cloud SQL Auth Proxy connection, use the local proxy listener or configured socket instead. Do not copy a host value from a different provider or topology.
Keep passwords and other secrets out of public source repositories. Prefer your hosting platform’s secret-management or environment-configuration mechanism where available, and ensure the resulting configuration is readable only by the application components that need it.

The provider-specific values and syntax can vary with the deployment, so consult the relevant provider documentation and your host’s configuration guidance rather than pasting an example from another environment. WordPress’s WP-CLI database command documentation confirms that WP-CLI uses database credentials loaded from wp-config.php.
Verify the connection before relying on the site
From the WordPress installation directory, run:
wp db connect
WP-CLI attempts to open a MySQL console using the credentials loaded from wp-config.php. A successful connection is a useful check that the configured database, credentials and path work from that environment. If the command is unavailable, install or enable WP-CLI for the environment, or test using a database client configured with the same network path and credentials.
For the symptom often shown as “Error establishing a database connection,” test one layer at a time rather than changing several settings at once.

Troubleshoot connection failures in order
- Database name or credentials are rejected: verify the database exists and that the username and password are the application account’s current values. Check that the account has the required access to the intended database.
- Wrong endpoint, port or socket: confirm whether the deployment uses a direct database endpoint or local proxy. For RDS, verify the endpoint and port; for Cloud SQL, ensure WordPress targets the proxy listener or socket that is actually running.
- The database is unavailable: check the provider console for database state and endpoint details. Confirm the proxy process is alive if the design depends on one.
- Network route or firewall blocks access: check VPC connectivity, peering, routing and security-group/firewall ingress. In the documented Lightsail-to-Aurora pattern, verify the peering, same-Region and security-group prerequisites.
- Cloud SQL authorization or proxy setup fails: check that the Cloud SQL Admin API is enabled, the proxy identity has the needed permission (including
cloudsql.instances.connect), credentials are available in the runtime, and private-IP mode is paired with VPC access. - TLS or client compatibility is wrong: compare the required TLS configuration with the provider’s current instructions, then check that the database engine and client libraries meet the WordPress version’s live requirements.
Avoid solving a reachability issue by making the database publicly reachable or allowing ingress from unrestricted sources. Correct the intended application-to-database path instead.
Prepare the setup for production
- Limit exposure: keep the database private where the application network design allows it, and permit inbound traffic only from the application runtime or approved proxy path.
- Encrypt the connection: use the provider-supported encrypted route and verify any required TLS settings. Google’s Auth Proxy encrypts supported connections; AWS supports TLS for RDS MySQL.
- Protect credentials: use a least-privileged application account and a deployment secret store where available. Rotate credentials through a planned process.
- Operate the proxy reliably: if using the Cloud SQL Auth Proxy, supervise its process and ensure its identity and permissions remain available to the WordPress runtime.
- Plan database operations: choose backups, maintenance and availability settings based on recovery needs and workload. AWS’s RDS creation guidance exposes these choices; the appropriate settings depend on the deployment.
- Monitor actual behavior: watch database availability, connection errors and workload performance. Neither a managed service nor a successful initial connection alone establishes a performance or uptime outcome for a particular site.
