You can run a quiz-style interaction during a YouTube live stream with the platform’s native live poll: ask a question, let viewers vote in chat, end the poll to reveal the results, then discuss the answer. YouTube calls this feature a poll, not a scored quiz. Pair it with Live Q&A if you want viewers to ask follow-up questions.
What YouTube’s live quiz features can—and can’t—do
YouTube’s native poll is a simple way to pose a question and collect audience choices during a live stream or Premiere. The creator can end the poll to show results. It is not a quiz system that scores viewers, tracks individual answers, or declares a winner.
For a quiz, supply the question and explain the correct answer yourself. That reveal-and-explain format is a hosting technique, not a platform requirement. Live Q&A complements a poll by collecting viewer questions in a list; you can select a question and pin it in chat, but Q&A is not a scored quiz.
Plan a quiz that fits the stream
Write a clear, relevant prompt
Connect the question to what you are discussing or showing. Keep the response action obvious—for example, ask viewers to choose the best answer in the poll. YouTube recommends using polls to let the audience choose what the creator does next, so a poll can also decide which topic, demonstration, or activity comes next.

Make the reveal part of the program
Leave enough time for people to notice the poll and respond. When you end it, acknowledge the result and explain the answer or what the audience choice means for the stream. If the topic invites discussion, follow with Live Q&A and answer a selected question.
Set expectations honestly
Polls and Q&A give viewers ways to participate, but YouTube’s guidance does not establish a specific increase in watch time, retention, chat volume, or channel growth from quizzes. Treat them as interaction options, not guaranteed growth tactics. YouTube’s discussion of live interaction is platform guidance, not a quantified independent evaluation (Why choose Live).

YouTube’s Android instructions also describe Q&A stickers and countdown stickers for vertical live streams; the countdown can be set for up to 60 minutes. Confirm the current options in the app on your device and account before planning around a specific control (YouTube Live chat on Android).
Choose a streaming setup that suits the show
YouTube identifies mobile, webcam, and encoder as ways to stream. A computer webcam setup requires a computer with a webcam; a separate webcam is not essential if a built-in camera, mobile stream, or encoder suits your production. YouTube’s guidance does not rank these routes for quiz hosting.
- Mobile: useful when you want to host from the YouTube app and the available mobile controls meet your needs.
- Webcam: a straightforward computer route when you want to speak to the camera and manage chat from the computer.
- Encoder: a production-software route when your show uses an encoder workflow.
Before going live, YouTube says your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Review its current computer live-streaming tips for eligibility and setup guidance.
Make participation accessible and manageable
Polls and Q&A are managed through live chat, so do not assume every viewer will see the same controls or have the same ability to participate. YouTube says chat is available on watch pages and can be limited by chat settings; embedded or otherwise restricted viewing contexts may differ (live chat help; learn about live streams).

- Moderate chat and set a welcoming tone. YouTube recommends moderation and community rituals as part of building a safe, enjoyable live community.
- If the poll is central to the segment, explain what you will do if chat participation is limited—for example, continue with the planned explanation rather than waiting indefinitely.
Native polls or an external quiz tool?
For a straightforward live question, the native poll keeps the interaction in YouTube chat. An external quiz tool may suit a different format, but compare it before relying on it during a broadcast.
| Consideration | YouTube live poll | External quiz tool |
|---|---|---|
| Setup and viewer flow | Created from live chat using YouTube’s poll controls. | Depends on the chosen tool; current features are not established here. |
| Results and interaction surface | Poll results can be shown by ending the poll; viewers interact through chat. | Whether answers and results appear directly in YouTube chat depends on the tool. |
| Scoring and quiz mechanics | Native polls are not documented as scored quizzes. | Capabilities, accessibility, moderation, reliability, and cost must be checked with the provider. |

Troubleshoot common snags
The poll option is missing
Confirm that you are in the live chat for an active or scheduled stream or Premiere, and check the current YouTube controls. Account, device, and interface availability can vary; on Android, follow the app’s current Add menu rather than assuming desktop labels apply.
Viewers cannot participate
Check whether live chat is enabled and whether chat settings or the viewer’s watch context limit access. Give viewers a clear alternative, such as listening to the answer discussion, rather than treating a missing vote as proof that nobody is watching.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Few answers arrive before the reveal
Give people time to notice and read the question, restate how to vote, and then proceed with your explanation when ready. A poll is a prompt, not a guarantee of a particular participation level.
You cannot start a live stream
Check channel verification and whether a live-streaming restriction has applied in the previous 90 days. Also confirm that your chosen route—mobile, webcam, or encoder—is set up for the device and account you are using.

YouTube Help describes polls, Q&A, community practices, viewer chat, and streaming routes in the linked pages above. Feature labels and availability can change; verify the controls in YouTube Studio or the YouTube app before a planned broadcast.
