Test each key in the game; controls and defaults can differ by game and MEmu version.
Set up a keyboard mapping
- Open the game. Start the Android game in MEmu so its on-screen controls are visible.
- Open mapping mode. Click Keyboard on MEmu’s sidebar. MEmu’s setup guide documents this entry point and the drag-and-place workflow: How to Setup Key Mapping?.
- Place controls over the matching touch targets. Drag each mapping control to the corresponding game control. For example, put a movement mapping on the movement pad, a skill mapping on a skill icon, and aim and fire mappings on the aiming and firing areas.
- Assign keys. Select a mapping’s displayed key and change it if you prefer another key. Choose keys that are comfortable and do not conflict with other actions.
- Save and test. Save the layout, return to play, and check that each key activates the intended action. If the game’s HUD changes, reopen mapping mode and reposition controls to match the new on-screen layout.
MEmu’s setup guide also documents menu options for importing and exporting mapping configuration files. Export a working layout before making substantial changes, then use the menu’s import option if you need to restore it. The guide does not establish that a file will work across different games, MEmu versions, or computers, so verify the imported layout in your own setup.
Choose a mapping control for each action
MEmu’s module tutorial explains several mapping types. Its detailed descriptions date to 2021, so exact controls and interface behavior may vary in newer versions: MEmu Key Mapping Tutorial.

The tutorial also documents specialized modules such as Cooperate, Operation Recorder, Macro, Zoom, Expand Sight, Gravity Sensor, 3D View, and Fake GPS. Use those only if the game calls for the relevant behavior. For Macro commands, consult the in-product Guide rather than relying on guessed script syntax.

Use Smart Keys without assuming defaults are universal
Smart Keys are automatic, context-sensitive controls that can adapt to in-game situations. MEmu’s Smart Key article gives examples such as a smart F key for contextual actions and releasing the pointer for menus, and says Smart Keys can be modified: MEmu Smart Key.
That article, published in December 2020, lists Call of Duty, PUBG, PUBG Lite, Free Fire, Life After, and Brawl Stars. Treat that as a historical list, not a confirmed compatibility list for your current game or installed MEmu version. Check what appears in the mapping panel for your game and adjust it if the HUD or controls have changed.

MEmu 9.5.5, released July 3, 2026, notes an upgrade to key-binding preloading intended to improve configuration for users with non-English keyboard layouts. This is a version-specific improvement, not confirmation that every keyboard-layout problem is resolved. See the MEmu 9.5.5 release notes.
Fix common mapping problems
The camera is stuck or mouse capture feels wrong
Toggle the capture key to hide or unhide the mouse. Ctrl may be the capture key, but MEmu’s troubleshooting guidance says it can differ by game and suggests trying ~ or F1. If the problem appears to be a temporary glitch, try Alt+Tab. See MEmu Key Mapping Troubleshooting.

A changed button no longer works as expected
Open the mapping setup panel and use its restore icon to return the button to its default. MEmu’s troubleshooting article illustrates the icon; look for the restore function rather than relying on a particular label.
Keys stopped working after a game update
A game update can make a Smart Key layout need adjustment. MEmu’s troubleshooting article, published in 2021, says updated mappings were usually provided within one business day and a notification appeared when the game started. That is dated guidance, not a guaranteed current turnaround; check the mapping panel and any notification in your installed version.

Reload the mapping data
- Open the mapping setup panel.
- Modify any key on the left side of the screen, then save once.
- Open the drop-down menu and choose the reload option. MEmu documents this sequence as a way to recover mapping data from its main mapping database.
Use database deletion only as a last resort
MEmu’s troubleshooting article says that, if simpler recovery does not work, deleting memu2.db and memudef.db from the main MEmu directory and restarting can prompt mapping data to be downloaded again. This can affect startup if MEmu cannot connect to its server. Follow current official support instructions before deleting files; this is not a routine first step.
Use a gamepad as an optional alternative
A gamepad is not required for keyboard mapping. MEmu documents joystick setup as a separate option: connect a joystick to the PC, verify its buttons respond in the device properties, then launch the game and map gamepad buttons to matching on-screen controls. No particular brand or model is required by the setup instructions. The same MEmu setup guide covers key-mapping configuration and joystick setup.
