Use executeAsyncScript() when asynchronous work must run inside the page and signal completion through Selenium’s injected callback. A completed navigation alone does not guarantee that a JavaScript-rendered element is ready.
Why wait after navigation?
Selenium navigation waits according to the configured page-load strategy and document readyState. That state concerns assets defined in the HTML; page JavaScript may still create or reveal the element your test needs. Wait for the application state that makes the next action safe, rather than assuming navigation completion means the whole page is ready. See Selenium’s Waiting Strategies.
Use driver.wait() for ordinary readiness checks
The JavaScript WebDriver API accepts a condition, function, or thenable. It repeatedly checks the condition until it resolves to a truthy value or the timeout expires. The value returned by a successful condition can be useful—for example, an element returned by elementLocated can be used directly.
Wait until an element is located
Install the JavaScript binding with npm install selenium-webdriver, then use a locator condition before interacting with the element:

Wait until a known element is visible
When you already hold a WebElement and need it to become displayed after a page action, wait on Selenium’s visibility condition:

await field.sendKeys('ready');Visibility is a separate requirement from presence. For other interactions, such as clicking an element that may be covered or disabled, determine the relevant readiness condition for your application; do not treat location or visibility alone as proof that every interaction will succeed.

Wait for application-specific state
Use a custom function when the useful signal is application state rather than element presence. The function should return a truthy value only when the next operation is safe:

}, 10_000);Because the condition is asynchronous, time spent resolving it counts toward the wait timeout. Choose a signal that the application actually exposes and that has a direct relationship to the operation that follows.
Choose the wait that matches the next action

Condition-based waits respond to observed state. A fixed sleep can be too short when a page is slow or unnecessarily long when it is fast, making it a poor default for synchronization.

Use executeAsyncScript() for page-context asynchronous work
executeAsyncScript() runs in the currently selected browser frame and window. Selenium supplies a callback as the final script argument; invoke it when the page-side operation is complete so Selenium can resolve the command:

});Here, result receives 'complete'. If any success path fails to call done, the script can remain pending until Selenium’s script timeout interrupts it. This is for asynchronous work within the page, not usually the right way to wait for an element; use driver.wait() with a condition for that.
Selenium’s generated JavaScript API reference lists a 30,000 ms default script timeout, but defaults can vary by release. Set a deliberate timeout when your script depends on one, and check the API reference for the installed binding version. The JavaScript API documents WebDriver methods and timeout behavior. Selenium’s documentation also demonstrates passing the callback through arguments[arguments.length - 1] in a string script; check function serialization and argument behavior against your binding version.

Keep implicit and explicit waits from interfering
An implicit wait applies globally to element-location calls. An explicit wait such as driver.wait() repeatedly evaluates its condition, which may itself locate elements. Combining the two can make elapsed time unpredictable. Selenium advises against mixing implicit and explicit waits; prefer a consistent explicit-wait strategy for page-specific readiness instead of layering a global implicit wait on top.
Troubleshoot wait failures
- Element not found immediately after navigation: The document reached its configured ready state, but application JavaScript may not have added the element yet. Wait for its locator or for a meaningful app-state signal.
- Element is found but interaction fails: Presence does not imply visibility or interactability. Wait for the property the next action needs and inspect whether the element is covered, disabled, or otherwise unavailable.
- The wait takes longer than its timeout seems to imply: Check whether a global implicit wait is affecting element lookups inside the explicit condition. Avoid combining the mechanisms.
- An async script hangs or times out: Check that every completion path invokes the callback, and set a script timeout suited to the page-side operation.
- Fixed sleeps make tests slow or flaky: Replace arbitrary delays with a condition that observes the required element or application state.

What does the callback return from executeAsyncScript()?
The value passed to the injected completion callback becomes the result of the script command.
