Most JavaScript libraries can be used in a Vue project if their runtime and module format are compatible. Import a library directly where it is needed when it is ordinary JavaScript; wrap it in a Vue plugin when it must register components or directives, provide shared values, or configure app-wide behavior. In Vue 3, install a plugin with app.use() before mounting the app.

Choose the integration that matches what the library needs

Vue describes plugins as “self-contained code that usually add app-level functionality.” That does not mean every dependency needs a plugin. Start with the library’s documented API and decide whether it needs anything from the Vue app itself.

Library need Integration approach
Ordinary JavaScript functionality used in one module or component Install the package as its documentation specifies, then import and call it where needed.
Vue components or directives that should be registered app-wide, shared injected values, or other app-level setup Create or use a Vue plugin and install it on the app before mounting.
A library loaded directly in a browser page without a build step Use its documented global-script or native ES module workflow, and ensure the selected build suits production.

These are integration patterns, not universal installation commands: the package name, import path, initialization arguments, and required assets depend on the library.

Import an ordinary library in the module that uses it

If a dependency has no Vue-specific registration or shared app setup, use its documented JavaScript API in the component or module that needs it. For example, the shape might look like this, but the package name and API are illustrative:

import { someFunction } from 'some-library'

someFunction()

Keep component-specific work close to the component that owns it. Check the library documentation for whether it exports ES modules, requires separate CSS or other assets, expects browser globals, or supports the Vue version and runtime environment used by your project. If it attaches resources to a DOM element or starts ongoing work, also determine how the library expects that work to be stopped or cleaned up.

Install a Vue 3 plugin for app-wide integration

Vue 3 accepts a plugin object with an install() method or an install function. Register it on the application before mounting, and pass plugin options as the second argument to app.use(). Vue installs the same plugin only once on a given app, even if app.use() is called again for it. See the Vue plugins guide and Application API.

import { createApp } from 'vue'
import App from './App.vue'
import SomePlugin from 'some-vue-plugin'

const app = createApp(App)
app.use(SomePlugin, { /* documented options */ })
app.mount('#app')

The plugin and option names above are examples. Follow the library’s own Vue integration instructions for the actual import and configuration.

What a plugin can add

  • Global Vue components or directives.
  • Values available through Vue’s provide/inject mechanism.
  • Global properties accessible to components.

Global properties can make dependencies less visible and applications harder to understand when overused. Prefer a local import or provide/inject when those approaches meet the requirement.

Match the setup to your project

Vite and single-file components

Vue’s official tooling uses @vitejs/plugin-vue to support Vue single-file components (SFCs) in Vite. Follow the setup for your project rather than adding a second, unrelated compilation path. If you need the SFC compiler programmatically, Vue advises importing it through vue/compiler-sfc, which keeps it aligned with the installed Vue runtime package version. See the Vue tooling guide.

Webpack

For webpack projects, Vue identifies vue-loader as the loader for Vue SFCs. The correct dependency and configuration depend on the project’s webpack setup; consult the official tooling guide rather than assuming Vite instructions apply.

Use Vue from a browser script or native ES module

For an existing page or a small enhancement, Vue can be loaded as a standalone script without a build step. The official quick start also demonstrates native ES modules with an import map. That option has browser constraints: Vue’s guide specifically notes that Safari supports import maps in Safari 16.4 and later. Choose the workflow against the browsers your page must support, and use the appropriate production build for production deployment. See Vue’s quick start and CDN usage guidance.

Check compatibility and lifecycle details before integrating

“JavaScript library” covers many different runtime assumptions. Before choosing an integration, check the library’s own documentation for:

  • Supported Vue versions, if it provides Vue-specific integration.
  • Available module formats and whether your build tool or browser workflow can load them.
  • Browser or runtime requirements, including any global objects it assumes.
  • Required CSS, images, fonts, workers, or other assets.
  • When initialization should happen relative to Vue rendering and DOM availability.
  • How to dispose of event listeners, observers, timers, or other resources when the relevant component or app is no longer in use.

If a library’s Vue version support, module format, or teardown behavior is not documented, compatibility should be treated as unconfirmed rather than assumed.

Vue 2 tutorials are not drop-in instructions for Vue 3

Vue 3 application plugins are registered with app.use(plugin, options). Older Vue 2 examples commonly use Vue.use(), a different API shape. Confirm which Vue version the project and library target before copying setup code; use the documentation for that version. Vue 2’s API reference is available at Vue 2 API: Vue.use.
