In current Selenium Java code, implement WebDriverListener, wrap your driver with EventFiringDecorator, and use the decorated driver for the browser calls you want to observe. This lets you log or inspect WebDriver, WebElement, and related interactions through callbacks. Selenium’s EventFiringDecorator API documents the registration pattern and callback behavior.
Register a listener and use the decorated driver
Create the original WebDriver, implement the callback or callbacks you need, then pass the listener to EventFiringDecorator. The object returned by decorate is the one that fires callbacks. Calls made through the original driver reference do not pass through that wrapper.
import org.openqa.selenium.WebDriver;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebElement;
import org.openqa.selenium.firefox.FirefoxDriver;
import org.openqa.selenium.support.events.EventFiringDecorator;
import org.openqa.selenium.support.events.WebDriverListener;
public class ListenerExample {
public static void main(String[] args) {
WebDriver original = new FirefoxDriver();
WebDriverListener listener = new WebDriverListener() {
@Override
public void beforeGet(WebDriver driver, String url) {
System.out.println("Opening: " + url);
}
@Override
public void afterClick(WebElement element) {
System.out.println("Clicked an element");
}
};
WebDriver driver = new EventFiringDecorator(listener).decorate(original);
try {
driver.get("https://www.selenium.dev/");
} finally {
driver.quit();
}
}
}
The imports and callback signatures shown are from Selenium’s Java event API. The example assumes a compatible Selenium Java dependency and a Firefox driver setup in the project; driver installation and dependency configuration are outside the listener API itself. The try/finally ensures the session is quit even if navigation fails.
Choose callback scope
Specific callbacks
Use callbacks such as beforeGet, afterClick, or afterGetText when you need to observe a particular operation. A callback can inspect its arguments, and callbacks after a method can inspect returned values where that method returns one.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Generic callbacks
For broader instrumentation, implement generic hooks such as beforeAnyWebElementCall or beforeAnyCall. They can cover many operations, but may produce noisy or overly broad logging. You can combine generic and specific callbacks when both levels are useful.
Callback order and execution behavior
When generic and specific callbacks both apply, before callbacks run from the broadest scope toward the specific one. For example, the documented sequence is beforeAnyCall, beforeAnyWebDriverCall, then beforeGet. Corresponding after callbacks run in reverse order.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Listener code runs in the same thread as the WebDriver method being observed. Keep it quick; blocking work can delay the Selenium call.
- Exceptions raised by listener code are suppressed by default. To propagate them, implement
throwsExceptions()in your listener and returntrue. - A listener observes calls; it is not the mechanism for preventing a decorated method from running or generally changing its arguments or result.
For substantial changes to driver behavior, Selenium documents WebDriverDecorator as the appropriate extension point rather than a listener. See the WebDriverListener API and EventFiringDecorator API.
Update older listener examples
Examples using AbstractEventListener, EventFiringWebDriver, or WebDriverEventListener describe removed APIs. Selenium’s migration article, published December 8, 2023, demonstrates replacing those classes with WebDriverListener and EventFiringDecorator: Removal of deprecated Java event classes.

For a high-level overview of listener support, see Selenium’s Command Listeners documentation. Check the API documentation for the Selenium version used by your project, since APIs can change between releases.
Troubleshoot common listener problems
- No callbacks appear: confirm that interactions use the decorated driver returned by
decorate, not the original driver reference. - The callback signature does not compile: verify the import package and method signature against the Selenium Java API for the version in your build. Old event-class examples use APIs that have been removed.
- Tests slow down after adding instrumentation: listener callbacks run in the WebDriver call’s thread. Remove blocking work and keep callbacks focused.
- A listener exception is not failing the test: listener exceptions are suppressed by default. Return
truefromthrowsExceptions()if they should propagate. - You need to skip or alter a driver operation: listeners are for observation and limited side effects, not general interception or behavior changes. Use a custom
WebDriverDecoratorfor that purpose.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a page image or PDF rather than instrument Selenium interactions, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. It is not a Selenium event listener; it is an alternative for producing captures without setting up a browser session in your code.
