Use Jasmine to organize and assert your JavaScript tests, and Selenium WebDriver to control a real browser. Install both in a Node.js project, create an asynchronous WebDriver session in Jasmine hooks, await each browser action, and close the session during cleanup. This is different from running Jasmine specs inside a browser with jasmine-browser-runner.
How Jasmine and Selenium work together
Jasmine is a JavaScript testing framework: it groups specs and provides expectations. Selenium WebDriver is the browser-control layer. It lets a test navigate, locate elements, interact with them, and inspect rendered results. Jasmine does not provide browser automation by itself.
In the common Node.js arrangement, Jasmine runs the spec and Selenium’s JavaScript binding sends commands to a browser. Selenium’s JavaScript testing API documents Jasmine wrappers and browser and remote-server configuration: Selenium JavaScript testing API.
Choose the right Jasmine workflow
Use Jasmine specs to drive Selenium
Choose this when tests must exercise an application through a browser—for example, opening a page, submitting a form, and checking the visible response. The spec runs in Node.js; WebDriver controls the browser.

Run Jasmine specs in a browser
Choose jasmine-browser-runner when the goal is to execute JavaScript specs in a browser environment, rather than have Node-driven specs automate an application with WebDriver. The documented setup uses jasmine-browser-runner and jasmine-core, then initializes the configuration and runs the specs. Its commands are:

Set up a Node.js Jasmine and Selenium test
Selenium setup requires the language binding, a browser, and its corresponding driver, or access to a remote Selenium server. See Selenium installation. Install Jasmine and Selenium’s JavaScript binding as development dependencies; use the package manager and current release documentation to choose versions. No durable compatibility matrix is established here, so do not assume a particular package, browser, and driver combination without checking current documentation.

- Confirm the project runs under Node.js and decide whether it uses CommonJS or ES modules.
- Install Jasmine and
selenium-webdriveras development dependencies, following their current project instructions. - Provision a supported browser and matching driver, or obtain the endpoint for a managed Selenium server.
- Add an asynchronous Jasmine spec, then run it with the project’s Jasmine command.
This CommonJS example shows the integration pattern. Replace the sample URL and selectors with elements from your application:

Make browser tests reliable
- Await every WebDriver operation. Navigation, element lookup, input, clicks, and reads are asynchronous. Without
await, an expectation may run before the browser work finishes. - Wait for page state, not an arbitrary delay. For asynchronously updated pages, wait for a meaningful condition such as an element appearing or text changing. Selenium documents waiting strategies; fixed sleeps are not a sound default.
- Keep expectations user-visible. Use WebDriver for user-like actions and Jasmine expectations for outcomes that matter to the user.
- Make the session scope deliberate. A suite-scoped driver can avoid repeated startup overhead, but may leak state between specs. Per-spec sessions improve isolation at the cost of extra setup. Choose based on suite size and application behavior.
- Clean up even after failures. Use
afterAllfor a suite-scoped session orafterEachfor per-spec sessions, and guard the quit call in case setup failed before creating a driver. - Keep browser and driver compatible. Check the current browser or driver vendor guidance for supported combinations; a fixed pairing is not established here.
Run against a remote Selenium server
When using Selenium’s documented JavaScript test helpers, SELENIUM_BROWSER can select a browser target and SELENIUM_REMOTE_URL can point to an externally managed Selenium server. Use the helper’s current API and environment setup instructions for your project: Selenium JavaScript testing API. For browser-runner specs, remote-grid setup is a separate configuration path documented by Jasmine.

Troubleshoot common failures
The browser does not start
Check that the selected browser is installed and that its driver is available and compatible. For a remote run, confirm the server is reachable and the remote URL is configured for the helper you are using.
The test finishes before the page interaction
Make the spec or hook asynchronous and await each WebDriver call. Jasmine must wait for the returned promise before treating the spec as complete.

Verify the URL and locator against the current page. If the application renders the element asynchronously, wait for its condition rather than adding an arbitrary fixed sleep.

A browser session remains after a failed test
Ensure the driver is stored where the cleanup hook can access it, guard against setup failure, and call quit() in the appropriate suite or per-spec cleanup hook.
Performance and cost considerations
Local browser sessions avoid relying on a remote grid but require a browser and compatible driver on the machine running the tests. A shared session can reduce repeated startup work; isolated sessions make state boundaries clearer but require more session setup. Remote execution can provide a managed environment, but introduces a server endpoint and network dependency. The documentation cited here does not establish quantitative speed, reliability, or pricing comparisons, so evaluate those against your own suite and infrastructure.

Can Selenium run Jasmine tests on a remote browser?
Yes. Selenium’s JavaScript testing helpers document remote-server configuration with SELENIUM_REMOTE_URL; the Jasmine browser runner also documents remote-grid execution. These are separate workflows.
Do I need jasmine-browser-runner to use Jasmine with Selenium?
No. It is for running Jasmine specs in a browser. Node.js Jasmine specs can instead use Selenium’s JavaScript binding to drive a browser.
