Use Instagram’s AI and recommendations to spot audience questions and broad themes—not to reproduce another creator’s hook, script, visuals, or story. Start with your own audience and experience, ask AI for several distinct concept directions, then develop and verify one in your own voice. Instagram’s Edits Assistant is a reported option for this workflow, but availability may vary.
What Instagram AI can—and cannot—do for Reels ideas
Meta describes its recommendation systems as interpreting content, estimating viewers’ interests, retrieving and ranking candidate posts, and adapting to feedback such as watching or liking. That makes recommendations useful for noticing subjects that may interest viewers; it does not make your feed a complete trend database or a reliable forecast of reach. Meta’s explanation of recommendations also says that, in 2023, more than 20% of content in Facebook and Instagram feeds came from accounts, groups, or people users did not follow. That is a historical platform-wide figure, not a current measurement or a promise about your Reels.
Recommendations are personalized. What appears in your feed may reflect your own interaction history rather than a topic that is broadly popular. Use discovery to identify a general viewer question or recurring problem, then bring your own knowledge to it.

Android Central reported on October 1, 2026, that Instagram’s Edits app was rolling out an Edits Assistant. According to that report, open Edits, tap Chat, and ask a question. The assistant can use account signals to help research concepts that performed well and may suggest audio, while leaving creative choices to the user. Access and usage limits may vary by account or region; check the app for availability. These interface and feature details are reported by Android Central.

Build an original idea in six steps
- Write a brief before prompting. Name the intended viewer, the question or problem the Reel should address, and what you can contribute from first-hand knowledge. For example: “New home cooks; why rice turns mushy; my method for judging water and heat without a timer.”
- Ask for concept directions, not replicas. Give the assistant context and constraints. Meta’s prompt guidance recommends adding both and includes Reels-script prompts among its use cases. Meta’s Instagram prompt guide is a starting point, but the following wording is an original example, not a verified Meta prompt:
Give me five Reel concepts for [audience] about [topic], each with a different angle. Do not imitate any creator or existing Reel. Base the concepts on [my experience, process, or original demonstration]. For each, state the viewer question it answers and one way to make the example specific to my work.
- Use discovery to spot themes. Explore related Reels and note broad subjects, viewer questions, or general formats. If recommendations feel irrelevant, use Instagram’s Not interested feedback; Meta’s system-card material describes how interaction history and feedback can shape recommendations. Meta’s system-card overview explains the role of these controls. They refine what you see; they do not turn your feed into a universal trend report.
- Make the contribution yours. Ground the idea in your own explanation, test, demonstration, interview, viewpoint, or local context. A broad topic can inspire a new Reel; another person’s distinctive wording, sequence of shots, punchline, visuals, or personal story should not become your template. This is a practical originality standard, not a quoted Instagram rule.
- Check and rewrite the draft. Verify factual claims independently, replace generic phrasing with your natural voice, and make sure the script and visuals represent work you actually did. AI output is a draft—not proof that a claim is true or that an execution is original. If the idea only works when you recreate a specific creator’s expression, return to brainstorming.
- Test when appropriate, then learn from the result. Meta says Trial Reels let creators share a Reel with non-followers first. Treat the response as feedback on that post and audience, not as a formula for future performance.
Choose an idea source by what it lets you add
| Source | Useful for | What you need to contribute | Main check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Edits Assistant, if available | Generating concept directions from account signals, according to Android Central’s October 1, 2026 report | Your own experience, point of view, or demonstration | Confirm availability in your app and verify factual suggestions |
| Reels recommendations | Noticing adjacent topics and audience questions in your personalized feed | A distinct answer or angle—not someone else’s execution | Do not mistake a personalized recommendation for a universal trend |
| Your own work and audience questions | Finding ideas rooted in what you know, make, or hear from viewers | Specific evidence, examples, context, or a useful explanation | Check claims and make the Reel clear to someone who has not seen your earlier content |
What Trial Reels data can tell you
In a 2025 internal analysis covering more than 400,000 creators actively producing Reels, Meta compared the month after creators first used Trial Reels with the month before, controlling for confounding factors. Meta reported that 40% of the creators started posting Reels more often after trying the feature; among that subset, 80% saw increased Reels reach from non-followers. Meta says the analysis highlights possible performance and that results are not guaranteed. The figures describe the studied groups, not an expected outcome for an individual creator. Meta’s 2025 announcement describes the analysis and Trial Reels.
