Use Selenium’s ID locator with the element’s raw id value: in Java, driver.findElement(By.id("lname")); in Python, driver.find_element(By.ID, "lname"). Do not add a CSS # prefix to the ID locator argument. Use the singular lookup when one match is expected and the plural lookup when you need to inspect all matches or handle no matches.
What an ID locator does
An HTML element may have an ID attribute such as id="lname". Selenium’s dedicated ID strategy locates an element using that attribute value. The Selenium locator guide demonstrates the pattern across language bindings, including Java and Python. Selenium locator strategies
In Java, pass the raw ID string to By.id:

Use the right ID syntax
The dedicated ID locator takes the value alone. For an element with id="fname", write By.id("fname") in Java or By.ID, "fname" in Python. The hash prefix belongs to a CSS selector, not to the argument of an ID locator.

Choose one-result or all-results lookup
Use singular lookup when one element is expected
findElement returns the first element matching the locator in the current search context. Use it when the test expects one target element and will interact with or assert something about that element.

findElements returns all matching elements as a collection. If there are no matches, it returns an empty list. This makes it useful when the test needs to count matches, inspect duplicates, or branch on whether an element exists without relying on singular lookup behavior. Selenium: Finding web elements

WebElement lastName = matches.get(0);If duplicate IDs appear in the rendered page, singular lookup does not establish that the match is unique: it gives you the first matching element. Use plural lookup and assert the expected count when uniqueness is important to the test.
Build and use an ID locator in a test
- Open the page under test. Navigate using your existing WebDriver setup.
- Inspect the rendered DOM. Identify the target element and read its actual
idattribute. Do not assume a field’s visible label is its ID. - Pass the ID value as-is. For example, use
By.id("lname")in Java orBy.ID, "lname"in Python. - Select singular or plural lookup. Use
findElementfor a single expected element; usefindElementsif you need all matches or an empty collection for no matches. - Assert the test outcome. Use the resulting
WebElementin the interaction or assertion that verifies the behavior your test is meant to cover.
When to choose a different locator
An ID is a straightforward option when the target has a suitable ID and the page’s markup makes the target unambiguous. If it has no useful ID, Selenium also documents class name, CSS selector, name, link text, partial link text, tag name, and XPath strategies. Choose based on the page structure and what the test needs to identify; Selenium does not establish one locator strategy as universally best. Common problems and fixes
- The ID lookup finds no element. Check the rendered DOM for the exact ID value and confirm the page has reached the state in which the target exists. Pass the value without a leading
#. - The lookup returns an unexpected element. Check for duplicate IDs in the rendered markup. Use plural lookup to enumerate matches and assert the count if the test expects uniqueness.
- A CSS-form ID selector is being passed to the ID strategy. Change
By.id("#fname")toBy.id("fname"), or use a CSS locator with#fname. - The ID is not a suitable target. If the element has no useful ID or it does not identify the intended target clearly, choose another documented locator strategy based on the page structure.
