To show the currently playing song on a YouTube radio livestream, read the current title metadata from your Icecast mount, clean and check the value, then use an authorized YouTube Data API request to update the metadata of the correct live broadcast. Updating the YouTube liveStream feed title alone does not change what viewers see; the viewer-facing metadata belongs to the liveBroadcast and its associated video.
How Icecast and YouTube metadata fit together
Icecast provides source-stream metadata; YouTube exposes separate resources for the incoming feed and the broadcast viewers watch. The distinction matters when you want to display a song title or artist on the YouTube event.
liveStreamdescribes the incoming content feed.liveBroadcastrepresents the viewer-facing event and corresponds to a YouTube video.- The broadcast and video share the same ID. The broadcast’s title, description, category, privacy status, and other video metadata can be updated. Google notes that the stream resource’s title is not visible to YouTube users.
See Google’s LiveStreams resource reference, LiveBroadcasts resource reference, Life of a Broadcast, and YouTube Live Streaming API overview.
Plan the metadata you want viewers to see
Decide whether the Icecast value should replace the YouTube broadcast title, be appended to a stable station title, or be placed in the description. For a song display, a predictable format such as “Artist — Track | Station name” is easier to scan than an unstructured value. Keep any permanent station identification intact rather than replacing it with a song title on every update.

First inspect the actual Icecast mount and source client. ICY terminology includes a stream-title key, but metadata formats and exposure can vary by implementation and codec. Icecast documentation covers multiple releases, so use documentation matching the deployed server and source-client versions. The Apple explanation of the ICY stream-title key is terminology context, not a guarantee that every Icecast setup exposes metadata identically.
Build the Icecast-to-YouTube update workflow
- Read the current Icecast metadata. Identify the changing field on the correct mount and verify how your server or source client makes it available. Do not assume a parsing format before checking the deployed versions and configuration.
- Normalize the value. Trim whitespace, handle artist and title consistently, and define what happens when metadata is empty, malformed, or temporarily unavailable. Preserve the last good display or use a deliberate fallback rather than overwriting the broadcast with a blank or broken value.
- Suppress duplicates. Compare the normalized value with the last value successfully sent. Skip an update when nothing has changed. This reduces unnecessary writes and avoids repeatedly changing the broadcast for identical metadata.
- Identify the intended YouTube broadcast. Resolve the correct
liveBroadcastand its video ID. Do not confuse it with the associatedliveStreamresource, which represents the feed. - Authorize and update the viewer-facing metadata. Use an authorized YouTube API update for the broadcast/video fields you intend viewers to see. Follow the current API reference for required resource parts and fields, and preserve existing metadata when constructing an update; an incomplete update can unintentionally replace other values.
- Verify and monitor. Check the title or description on the actual live event after an update. Log the source value, target broadcast, request result, and errors so you can diagnose stale metadata, authorization failures, or API errors.
YouTube API write operations require authorization for the channel and the intended broadcast. The API documentation describes the resources and update capability, but it does not provide a built-in Icecast-to-YouTube connector or prescribe a universal polling interval. Choose and validate the cadence for your deployment, and monitor its errors and quota behavior rather than assuming a particular interval is always appropriate.

Choose between a custom integration and an automation connector
| Approach | What to verify | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Small polling/API integration | It can read the metadata format used by your Icecast mount, authorize the correct YouTube channel, update the desired broadcast field, suppress duplicates, and handle missing values and failures. | Offers control over parsing, cadence, and recovery, but needs implementation and ongoing maintenance. |
| Existing automation connector | Confirm it supports your specific Icecast metadata source and can update the YouTube broadcast field you need, with suitable authorization and error handling. | May reduce custom code, but compatibility with the particular mount and YouTube field must be verified; no specific connector is established here as suitable. |
Test and troubleshoot before relying on automation
- The YouTube title does not change: Check whether the integration updated the
liveBroadcast/video metadata rather than only theliveStreamresource title. Confirm the broadcast ID and inspect the API result. - The wrong event changes: Verify the target broadcast/video ID and channel authorization before enabling repeated updates.
- The song display becomes blank or garbled: Inspect the raw value exposed by the mount and source client. Add normalization and a missing-value policy; do not send empty or malformed metadata as a valid update.
- Updates repeat without a song change: Compare normalized values and send an update only when the value differs from the last successful update.
- Requests fail or updates stop: Check authorization, API errors, logs, and the deployed Icecast/source-client versions. The appropriate retry behavior depends on the failure; avoid an unbounded rapid retry loop.
- Updates are delayed or inconsistently timed: Validate the metadata exposure and chosen polling or event mechanism in the actual deployment. There is no universal interval specified for this workflow.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos running as a YouTube livestream from the cloud; it is not an Icecast metadata bridge and does not go live from a camera. Its workflow is to upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home, including a computer running OBS. Each slot streams the uploaded quality as-is up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
