You can use HLS source material for a 4K 60fps YouTube Live stream only by routing it through a compatible encoder or playout workflow that sends a live, rolling HLS feed to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. You cannot paste a static .m3u8 file into YouTube and turn it into a live stream. In this setup, “playlist” means the changing HLS ingest playlist of media segments—not a viewer-facing YouTube playlist.

What “HLS video files” means for YouTube Live

HLS is a delivery protocol built around a playlist that points to media segments. For YouTube Live ingest, an encoder or playout system must keep producing and sending segments and playlist updates to the HTTPS URL YouTube provides. A static .m3u8 and its existing files are not, by themselves, a live YouTube broadcast. YouTube’s documentation does not specify one universal file-to-live workflow or certify arbitrary third-party playlists, so compatibility depends on the encoder or playout system you use.

If you have existing HLS source material, use a workflow that can read or play that material and output a compliant rolling HLS stream to YouTube. OBS is among the encoders YouTube lists as supporting HLS output; that does not mean every input playlist or file arrangement will work without configuration.

How to set up HLS ingest in YouTube Live

  1. Create the YouTube stream and key. In YouTube Live Control Room, create a stream, generate or select its stream key, and choose HLS as the stream protocol. Copy the HTTPS stream URL shown by YouTube into your HLS-capable encoder. Keep the stream key private. If you intend to send HDR, YouTube says to leave manual resolution unchecked. YouTube’s HLS setup instructions describe the setup.
  2. Configure a rolling segment playlist. The encoder must send TS media segments and continually update the playlist. Use HTTPS POST or PUT requests; byte-range delivery is not supported. Keep the number of outstanding segments at five or fewer. YouTube recommends segments of one to four seconds and says no segment should be longer than five seconds. Google’s HLS ingestion guide covers these ingest requirements.
  3. Set the media format. The HLS ingest path supports H.264 or HEVC video, one AAC audio track, and a closed GOP, with up to 60 fps. The media must be muxed in M2TS. YouTube’s setup instructions also specify TS segment format; treat that as the segment requirement, alongside the M2TS muxing requirement, rather than assuming a static transport-stream file is a complete live feed. HTTPS is required for encryption.
  4. Match resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to the source. For 2160p at 60 fps, YouTube’s current settings table recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 (14 Mbps minimum) or 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC (10 Mbps minimum). These are YouTube recommendations, not a delivery guarantee. Set the encoder to the actual source resolution and frame rate, and ensure your sustained upload capacity can carry the stream reliably. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
  5. Start the encoder and check the live preview. Start the HLS output, then use Live Control Room to check stream health and the preview before sharing the stream. YouTube automatically transcodes live input into output formats for viewers, so the viewer’s available playback quality may differ from the input encoding.

4K 60fps bitrate and latency to plan for

Input format at 2160p60 YouTube minimum YouTube recommendation
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps 35 Mbps

The figures are YouTube’s current encoder-setting guidance, accessed in 2026; they are not a promise that a particular network or encoder will sustain the stream. Leave headroom above the target bitrate for network variation, and test using the same resolution, frame rate, codec, audio, and motion you plan to broadcast.

HLS generally has more latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments rather than as a continuous stream. YouTube disables ultra-low latency for HLS, and its encoder settings identify 4K/2160p as normal latency. If minimizing delay is more important than HLS-specific needs such as HDR or a codec unavailable over RTMP, compare the protocols before configuring the event. YouTube recommends RTMPS for general streaming and lists HLS as an option for HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. YouTube’s HLS guidance and encoder settings explain the trade-offs.

Test the complete workflow before going live

  • Run a private or unlisted test using the same HLS source, encoder settings, and network you will use for the event.
  • Include representative motion and audio; a static image or silent clip will not reveal all encoding or synchronization problems.
  • Check Live Control Room’s stream-health information and preview for dropped frames, warnings, missing audio, or unexpected quality.
  • Verify that the rolling playlist continues to update and that the encoder is not exceeding the five-outstanding-segment limit.
  • Review YouTube’s copyright and live-stream rules for all audio and video you have rights to use. A technically valid stream does not establish that its content is eligible for monetization or compliant with YouTube policies.

HLS versus RTMP for a 4K YouTube stream

Consideration HLS ingest RTMP/RTMPS
How it sends video Rolling playlist and media segments sent to YouTube’s HLS endpoint. Continuous stream; YouTube recommends RTMPS for general streaming.
Codec use Supports H.264 or HEVC video in the documented HLS workflow; YouTube identifies HLS for HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. Use when the required codec or workflow is supported by RTMP/RTMPS; consult YouTube’s current settings for the specific format.
Latency Higher than RTMP; ultra-low latency is unavailable, and 4K is normal latency. Lower latency than HLS in YouTube’s comparison; available latency depends on stream settings.
2160p60 bitrate guidance Codec-specific YouTube recommendations apply: 50 Mbps H.264 or 35 Mbps AV1/HEVC. Use YouTube’s current codec-specific settings; the 2160p60 figures above are not a protocol-independent guarantee.

Troubleshooting HLS ingest

YouTube does not detect the incoming stream

Confirm that HLS is selected for the stream in Live Control Room, that the encoder is using the exact HTTPS ingest URL and matching stream key, and that it is sending requests over HTTPS with POST or PUT. A static playlist URL pasted into the control room is not an ingest stream.

The stream starts but has errors or interruptions

Check that playlist updates continue, the playlist has no more than five outstanding segments, segment delivery does not use unsupported byte ranges, and the network sustains the configured bitrate. Inspect the encoder logs and YouTube stream-health indicators to identify whether the failure is at the encoder, network, or ingest end.

Video or audio is missing, or the feed is rejected

Check the format requirements: H.264 or HEVC video, a single AAC audio track, closed GOP, M2TS muxing, TS media segments, and a supported frame rate of up to 60 fps. Confirm that the encoder is outputting a rolling HLS playlist rather than simply referencing an existing file.

The stream is delayed more than expected

That is a protocol trade-off: YouTube says HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP, and 4K uses normal latency. HLS does not offer YouTube’s ultra-low-latency option. If delay is unsuitable and your codec and production requirements permit, evaluate RTMPS instead.
