Set up HeroUI v3 in a new React project
These instructions follow HeroUI’s current v3 quick start. They apply to projects using React 19+ and Tailwind CSS v4; don’t combine them with older v2 setup instructions. See the official HeroUI Quick Start for the current setup.
1. Check your React and Tailwind versions
Before installing HeroUI v3, confirm your project uses React 19 or later and Tailwind CSS v4. If it does not, upgrade those dependencies before following this setup.
2. Install the HeroUI packages
npm i @heroui/styles @heroui/reactUse the equivalent install command for your package manager if you don’t use npm.

3. Import the stylesheets in order
In your main CSS file, import Tailwind first and HeroUI styles second:

Import a component from @heroui/react and use it in your React component. For example:

“NextUI to HeroUI” and “HeroUI v2 to v3” are not the same upgrade. Identify your installed packages and version first, then follow the corresponding guide.

Migrate a NextUI project to HeroUI
If your project uses NextUI’s @nextui-org/* packages, HeroUI’s v2 migration guide recommends its codemod to update the project’s naming and references. In a monorepo, run it from the repository root.

Run the codemod:
npx @heroui/codemod@latest migrate -
Run your package manager’s install command to install the updated dependencies.

Review the changes and verify the application: confirm components render, theme customizations remain intact, no NextUI imports remain, and the app builds.

The codemod is a migration aid, not a guarantee that the app needs no further edits. Consult the official NextUI-to-HeroUI guide for its scope and checklist.
Upgrade HeroUI v2 to v3 carefully
A full v2-to-v3 upgrade is a breaking migration, not just a package rename. HeroUI says v2 and v3 cannot coexist during a full migration, so the project will be broken during the transition. Work on a feature branch to keep the main branch usable.
Plan the migration before changing dependencies
- Check which components your app uses against the v3 migration references. Some APIs move to compound-component patterns; hooks and styling tokens may change.
- Account for renamed components, including Divider to Separator, Autocomplete to Combobox, and NumberInput to NumberField.
- Find replacements for components removed in v3. The guide lists Code, Image, Navbar, Ripple, Snippet, Spacer, and User; use HTML elements where appropriate.
Follow the migration sequence

Create a feature branch and follow the guide’s instructions to migrate component code while the project is still on v2 dependencies.

Switch dependencies to the v3 setup and resolve the remaining migration issues. This requires React 19+ and Tailwind CSS v4, with
@heroui/stylesalongside@heroui/react. -
Remove Framer Motion and the
heroui()Tailwind plugin setup as directed by the guide. In the main stylesheet, import Tailwind before HeroUI styles. HeroUI v3 does not requireHeroUIProvider. -
During the intentionally broken in-progress migration, follow the guide’s instruction not to build or run the application; use type checking and linting for checks at that stage.

After the migration is complete, test functionality, accessibility, responsive behavior, and visuals. Consult the guide for its performance-testing recommendation and component-specific changes.

Older HeroUI v2 projects use v2 styling configuration and HeroUIProvider. The v3 quick start instead uses @heroui/styles and Tailwind v4 CSS imports; according to the migration guide, v3 does not require the provider. Confirm your installed version before copying setup code so you don’t mix incompatible instructions.
