headless_chrome lets a Rust program control Chrome or Chromium through the Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP). The official docs.rs page identifies version 1.0.22 and documents a synchronous API for launching a browser, opening a tab, navigating, waiting for elements, running JavaScript, and taking screenshots. It is useful for browser tests and crawling, but it is not a complete Puppeteer replacement and does not cover every CDP feature. [docs.rs]

What headless_chrome does

The crate provides a high-level Rust interface to Chrome or Chromium over CDP. Your program launches or connects to a browser, then issues browser and page operations through the crate. Its API is synchronous and uses threads, rather than integrating as an async Tokio client. The project describes it as similar in purpose to Puppeteer while explicitly cautioning that it is not fully feature-compatible. [Project README]

The project advertises browser testing and web crawling as use cases. Its documented quick start covers launching a browser, navigating to a page, waiting for an element, taking a screenshot, and executing JavaScript in an element context. For API details beyond that short path, the repository’s tests provide further examples. [Crate documentation] [Repository and examples]

Choose how Chrome is provided

There are two basic setup choices: use the crate’s documented browser-fetching option, or install Chrome/Chromium yourself and make a usable executable available to the process. The project documents fetching a known-good browser binary for Linux, macOS, and Windows. The exact availability and compatibility depend on the crate version and platform, so check the versioned documentation for your build. [docs.rs]

Use a browser supplied by your environment

Choose this when your deployment image or workstation already manages browser installation and upgrades. Confirm that the executable is present in the runtime environment and that the process can launch it. This avoids downloading a browser as part of the crate setup, but puts browser provisioning and version management on your system.

Enable the documented fetch feature

If you want the crate to download a known-good browser binary, enable its documented fetch Cargo feature. Review the version-specific crate documentation for the feature declaration and platform details rather than assuming that a particular browser path or release applies everywhere. [docs.rs]

Basic Rust workflow

The following is the shape of the official quick-start workflow: create a browser, get a tab, navigate, wait for a page element, capture a screenshot, and run JavaScript against the element. Consult the versioned API docs and repository examples when adapting method signatures or options for a specific release. [Crate documentation] [Repository examples]

  1. Add the dependency. Add headless_chrome to Cargo.toml. Enable fetch only if you want the crate’s documented browser-fetching behavior; otherwise arrange for Chrome or Chromium to be installed and accessible.
  2. Launch a browser. Use Browser::default() for the documented quick start. Use LaunchOptions or LaunchOptionsBuilder when your environment needs explicit launch configuration.
  3. Get a tab and navigate. Obtain a tab from the browser and navigate to the target URL.
  4. Wait before interacting. Wait for a selector that identifies the content you need rather than assuming navigation means the page is ready.
  5. Capture or inspect. Use the documented screenshot or JavaScript methods to collect the output required by your task.
  6. Propagate failures. Return or map crate errors through your application’s normal error-handling path instead of discarding them.

Launch configuration

Browser::default() is the quick-start choice. For non-default environments, the project exposes LaunchOptions and LaunchOptionsBuilder so callers can configure launch behavior. The exact options should be checked against the API docs for the crate version you compile; do not copy a launch option from a different release without confirming its current name and meaning. Wait for page state, not just navigation

Modern pages often render content after the initial document navigation through JavaScript. The documented workflow’s element wait is a useful pattern: choose a selector that represents the result your automation actually needs, then continue only after it appears. This is more meaningful than treating a successful navigation call as proof that all application content is ready.

Use examples for operation-specific details

For interactions such as screenshots, JavaScript execution, network interception, and other features, use the crate’s documented methods and repository tests as the source of truth. The quick-start page is intentionally condensed; it should not be treated as a complete map of method signatures or of all supported CDP operations. [Repository tests and examples]

What operations are supported—and what is not established

The project documentation names network request interception, JavaScript coverage monitoring, incognito windows, element and full-page screenshots, PDF output, headful browsing, extension preloading, and fetching a known-good browser binary for Linux, macOS, and Windows. These are project-documented capabilities; check the API documentation for the release you use before depending on a particular call or platform behavior. [Crate documentation] [Project README]

The README also lists areas it does not implement, including frame handling, file chooser interactions, touchscreen tapping, network-condition emulation, network request timing, SSL certificate reading, XHR replay, HTTP Basic Auth, EventSource inspection, and WebSocket inspection. This is a list of documented gaps, not a guarantee that every CDP feature not named there is supported. If your workflow relies on a specific browser protocol operation, verify that exact operation in the crate API before choosing the crate. [Project README]

headless_chrome or fantoccini?

The project’s README contrasts headless_chrome with fantoccini. It characterizes headless_chrome as synchronous, thread-based, and CDP-oriented; fantoccini as asynchronous on Tokio, WebDriver-based, and usable with browsers beyond Chrome. The README describes fantoccini as more battle-tested, while noting that it does not expose CDP-specific functionality such as JavaScript coverage. Treat those maturity and capability descriptions as the project’s own comparison, not as a universal compatibility guarantee. [Project README]

Decision point headless_chrome fantoccini
Browser protocol Chrome DevTools Protocol WebDriver
Execution model Synchronous API using threads Asynchronous API on Tokio
Browser scope Chrome/Chromium Can work with browsers beyond Chrome
CDP-specific features Offers CDP-oriented functionality such as JavaScript coverage The README says it does not expose CDP-specific functionality such as JavaScript coverage
Project’s maturity characterization README calls it less battle-tested by comparison README calls it more battle-tested

Prefer headless_chrome when you specifically need Chrome/Chromium and a documented CDP capability, and its synchronous model fits your application. Consider fantoccini when Tokio integration or browser choice beyond Chrome matters more than direct CDP-specific operations. Validate the operation and browser combination your own tests require before committing to either library.

Why Chrome launch can time out

A timeout during browser startup can involve sandbox configuration. The README notes that sandboxing may need to be enabled in the kernel or through a setuid sandbox, but this is environment-dependent advice, not a universal command or diagnosis. Check your operating system, container or host policy, and the launch configuration before changing sandbox settings. [Project README]

Collect diagnostics first

When running tests, the project suggests enabling a Rust backtrace and trace-level crate logging:

Use the trace output to distinguish a browser process that fails to start from a page load or later operation that stalls. Then check that the runtime can access the browser executable and that the environment’s sandbox requirements are satisfied. Avoid applying a blanket sandbox-disabling flag: the README’s advice is to investigate sandbox setup, and the right setting depends on the host. [Project README]

Hosted browser execution

If local browser installation or execution is unsuitable, Steel publishes a cookbook recipe for using headless_chrome with a cloud browser. The recipe establishes that this integration pattern exists; it does not, by itself, establish service pricing, limits, availability, or commercial terms. [Steel cookbook]

Or skip the browser setup

If your job is simply to capture a webpage rather than automate arbitrary browser interactions, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request with a URL returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It accepts cookie/consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with verdict and billing information in response headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents.

For a basic capture, use the documented API call below; replace the target URL and use your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
