What Angular component tests and Happo each cover
An Angular component combines a TypeScript class with an HTML template. Angular’s component-testing guide recommends testing that these parts work together as intended. Use component tests for behavioral and DOM-level assertions—for example, whether an action updates displayed text or a disabled state prevents an operation.
Happo provides a separate visual-regression check: it captures rendered UI and compares it with earlier screenshots. That can reveal changes to layout, spacing, typography, or responsive presentation that a behavioral assertion may not detect. Keep the two checks complementary rather than treating screenshots as a replacement for functional tests.
Check your Angular test runner first
The runner depends on how the project was created and configured. Angular’s current testing overview says new Angular CLI projects use Vitest and jsdom by default, while Karma remains supported for existing projects. Check the Angular version and the test target in angular.json before relying on a particular runner or changing test commands.

Run the configured test target with ng test. Continue using the project’s configured setup for component behavior tests; Happo’s documented path described here is a separate Storybook integration, not a command to run inside TestBed.
Make representative component states available in Storybook
Create stories for the states whose appearance matters to your team. A button might need a default and disabled story; a data panel might need loading, error, empty, and populated stories. These are practical examples, not a fixed Happo requirement. Choose states that represent meaningful UI and avoid duplicating near-identical stories without a review purpose.

For interaction-dependent states, Happo describes using interaction tests to drive a story before taking its screenshot. For instance, a story can be opened or expanded through an interaction so the captured image represents the state reviewers need to inspect. Keep assertions about correctness in Angular tests as well; a screenshot shows appearance, not whether the component’s behavior is logically correct.
Configure Happo to capture the stories in CI
- Review the current integration instructions. Start with Happo’s Storybook screenshot testing documentation. The Happo repository describes its package as an integration library but directs users to current documentation for comprehensive setup, so use the live guide for package names, configuration, and version-specific steps.
- Connect the Storybook integration. Configure Happo to render the project’s stories as described in its documentation. The available sources do not establish an Angular-specific package version, exact setup command, or direct
TestBedintegration, so do not copy a generic snippet and assume it is compatible with your project. - Run the visual check in CI. Have the configured job capture the stories on the branches or changes your team reviews. Keep the Angular test job in place; the jobs answer different questions.
- Inspect changed images before accepting them. Happo describes side-by-side, diff, and swipe review views, along with a tolerance setting intended to reduce insignificant image noise. Review the actual affected regions rather than treating every pixel difference as a defect.
- Decide separately whether to enable accessibility regression checks. Happo advertises an option to include accessibility checks with screenshot runs. Treat this as an additional regression signal, not a substitute for functional tests or a complete accessibility audit.
What Happo’s visual review can and cannot establish
A screenshot difference can point reviewers to a visual change, but it does not explain whether that change is intended. Check the story state, viewport, and relevant design expectations before updating an accepted baseline. Conversely, a clean visual comparison does not prove that event handling, data transformations, or other behavior is correct; those belong in component tests.

Happo describes support for multiple browsers and viewport sizes, CI review links, interaction-driven screenshots, and optional accessibility regression checks on its Storybook page. These are vendor-described capabilities; availability and setup details should be verified in the current product documentation.
Troubleshooting the workflow
The project does not use Vitest
Do not migrate runners solely to add Happo. Angular documents Karma support for existing projects; inspect angular.json and run the configured test target. The Storybook visual check is a separate integration path.

A component test passes but the screenshot changes
The test may assert behavior without checking the visual detail that changed. Inspect the affected story and viewport, then decide whether the change is expected. Add or refine a behavioral assertion only if there is also a correctness condition the test should verify.
The visual job cannot find the expected UI state
Confirm the relevant state is represented by a Storybook story and that any required interaction is driven before capture. A state that exists only as an implicit step in a component test is not automatically a Happo story.

Small image differences create noisy review
Use Happo’s documented tolerance setting where appropriate, then verify that it does not mask meaningful changes. A tolerance can reduce insignificant image noise, but it cannot determine whether a design change is acceptable.
You need an exact install command or compatible package version
The sources cited here do not establish current Angular-specific package versions or a reliable copy-and-paste setup command. Follow Happo’s current integration documentation and its repository README rather than guessing a version or assuming direct compatibility with TestBed.
